  3. I hated the original seat as much as the OP, constantly sliding in to the tank. Replaced quickly with a Corbin and put 100K on it before I sent it back to them to be re-foamed and re-covered. Also have a Sargent on my Ducati that works really well. Corbin is in Hollister, a short trip for you and I believe they do drop-in, one-day set up/customizations if you arrange it ahead of time.

  5. 6', and I'm OK with the stock seat. Hate Corbins they feel like they are made of ABS. When I bought my last bike with the Sargent I rode it up from San Diego 2 hrs, and thought I'd made a mistake. Took the peg lowering blocks off, and that was the ticket.

  7. At 5'7" also I find I prefer the stock seats over Corbins on my VFR's. My 4th Gen came with a Corbin and I ended up giving it away as I was sliding around on it in the corners. That said, I would be very interested in trying a Sargent after seeing what one looks like on a Fifth Gen.

  9. Hi Tom. Upgrading OEM charging system & loom is a defo bonus, future proof it etc. Doing the same upgrade with 10awg & alloy heat sink plate on my 99 5th Gen when i've the time spare, gunna run the 10awg direct to stator if poss, dunno if the rubber block will take the thicker wire or not as yet. I wonder why Honda fitted the R&R so far away from the stator on the 6th Gen & ran the loom across the V of the motor, surely loom would run cooler if routed around the motor like a 5th Gen. Dunno why Electrex charging components get a bad rep, I've had an R&R on my 99 for yrs, still running on OEM loom, never had any issues, R&R runs pretty cool, only ever gets warm, unlike the OEM unit that used to run quite hot. Only had the usual heat damage at the 3 pin stator loom - R&R connector, but that was prior to going to Electrex R&R, chopped out the shitty 3 pin plug n soldered, been mint ever since, obviously that'll all go when i rewire stuff soon, I always ride with lights on regardless, helps the R&R. Just need to source a quality stator at some point, let us know how the Electrex stator performs, based on my R&R's reliability i have no issue fitting an Electrex stator. Somewhere yrs ago I came across info on how to add extra oil cooling to the stator using a later model stator cover with an oil spray affair, think it required drilling thru the crankcase in someway, seems a grand idea if it helps the stator have an easier life. Not been able to find it since, but it's an interesting mod.👍
  10. A few pictures of the starting point. It's filthy, covered in cobwebs so needs a wash and a lot of degrease from chain oil fling, but that can wait for the moment. My first job is it is currently idling at 3k revs when warm. I'm guessing the piston on the wax unit might be stuck from sitting up so I lifted the tank to get at it.. The airbox screws look nasty so it might take some time to get those out! The current short list of jobs: front left caliper partially seized Needs a new tyre valve for the front wheel. Fork seals are blown Sort the fast idle. After that I can take it for a short spin to see how it runs and there will be a much longer list at that point! It was apparently not running well when parked so that's why I want to take it for a spin to see if it is acting up under load.
  11. I'm pretty sure that my VFR's spark plugs never had never been replaced, so that was my goal for today. The fronts were relatively easy to access after removing the side fairings, but are deeper in the head than I imagined. My spark plug socket lacks a rubber insert so I used the one one from the bike's toolkit. Not a lot of room to swing a ratchet, tho. Apparently the rears can be access just by propping up the fuel tank. That didn't look promising to me, and with a full tank I didn't fancy trying to rotate it onto the subframe. I'll wait till it's near empty and take an another stab at it. Here's what a new NGK IMR9B-9H looks like compared to a 16 year old one after 93,000 km. Then angle of each photo isn't quite the same, and the old one looks a bit scruffy, but both have about the same gap between electrode and ground strap. I'm almost disappointed there isn't much appreciable wear.
  12. Hey thanks to all that helped with any information towards my many issues with my bike . But it would seem the bike is not the one with the problems.. it was me all along.I feel shame.....you'd be surprised how many things actually work the way they should when you put the power to the correct sides of your start relay. Ignition, neutral switch.the whine from my starter. And almost everything that I was crying about . Go figure...Not saying I won't have more conundrums. (Or the bike for that matter). In my defense I didn't have a multi and just found my test light..it was the 💡 that saved the day . Wow I feel "not smart"!.. Case closed!! On to the next thread..thanks again .
  13. Thanks for the replies, The fuel cap was changed at some point. The other key only goes to the fuel cap. I would like to have one key for all the locks. I know you can't get them any more through Honda. Ebay prices are outrageous about $400. If I could fit a 6th gen lock set then the prices are reasonable. I wonder if anyone has done this. I know Terry had some good comments about it. but he was using a different triple tree. Today I changed the tires and oil. The brake fluid needs to be changed but its fine for now. It's amazing how many bolts and screws are missing from the bike. I'm also looking for passenger handles if anyone has some for sale I would be interested in them.
  14. I had the stock seat on my original 5th gen, and I tried higher bars but that caused me to slide forwards as the OP posted. The stock seat/bars were much better for my (and I'm 5' 7"). I'm guessing the OP being much taller has his torso more upright and that exagerates the forward slope of the seat. My current 5th gen has the Sargeant and I can confirm this is much flatter and does not push forward like the stock seat. It works much better in conjunction with the higher bars for me so will probably suit a taller rider with stock bars.

Hi all I'm having a weird electrical issue with my bike, a few days ago It cut out whilst riding and the fuel pump wouldn't prime so couldnt get it started, I turned on the high beam and after a few seconds the fuel pump primed and the high beam was lit on the dash as normal. I went to go for a ride today and the same issue it won't prime so I flashed the hi beam which again sorted the issue however didn't trust it to ride it as it seems intermittent now the hi beam or the fuel pump seems to be working at all now, anyone know where to check ?   19. As a general rule, Corbins are harder/firmer and put the rider toward the back of the seating area. Sargents are softer and flatter. Seems to me that skinny guys like the latter and guys with a gut like the Corbin.

  21. Recently bought a 2010 manual. Sold a 5th gen for it. No regrets. I didn't know I had a dream bike until I spent some time on this. It's perfect for the type of riding I do. Long days, 4 hours high way, 4-6 hour twisties. Anyway. The bike came with some stupid sounding "werks" can and a Z-bomb. I removed the z-bomb because as of now theres more then enough power for me and I like the use of a gear indicator a lot. My first bike had one and I missed it on the 5th gen. I know that the z-bomb just makes the bike think its in 3rd for 1st and 2nd gear and that it affects fueling maps. What is odd to me though is that the bike has pops and burbles on deceleration with and without the z-bomb. Does the bike have a tune because of the pops and burbles? Now that I think about it my ninja 650 had pops and burbles and it didn't have a tune just and slip on. Playing with the idea of a sabsteef tune. Not for more power, but just low speed smoothness which is more important to me then other stuff. Any reason to pay $400 for sabsteef when I have z-bomb? Gear indicator function is my preference, and low speed snatchiness would be nice to have smoothed. But I am not aching for more power at the moment. Better fuel economy would be nice. Raising the fan temp would also be cool. Wondering if there is a way to recalibrate the fuel gauge also. Any benefit to decatting before the tune or not? I don't really want to mess with decatting unless there is a real benefit to it. Is pair valve delete worth it also? Any other things I should know? Fantastic bike!
  22. Incidentally, I'm not sure what experiences people have had with these stators, but the one supplied to me was made in England. Hopefully I've not been carried off on a wave of patriotism when in fact great British skills of electrical engineering have been lost to history. Time will tell! I'll report back if it fails.
  23. Sargent and Corbin are popular aftermarket seats. I have a Corbin that I like. Cant comment on Sargent, never owned one. As with windscreens, grips, pegs and yes, seats, They are personal taste items. I may like one, but the same for another guy will hate it. Just an example... lots of touring type guys swear by RDL seats. I got a brief ride on one and hated it.

  26. I had a Sargent's OEM modified seat on my 86' 1st Gen. VFR750F back in the late 90's and it helped very much. I like the look of your Sargent's seat;looks like they gave you plenty of neutral/flat area to pull back into.
  27. Sargent seats are a good alternative. I tried the Corbin and it was incredibly uncomfortable. The Sargent is very comfortable and supportive and, along with the tank pads keeps me from suffering when braking hard. This video was taken for the audio but you can see the seat as well.       Juniper Pass

      I took a day off from work and also from my bicycle training to take out the Veefalo one last time before the weather turns ugly, supposed to snow the rest of the week and possibly start sticking to the ground along the Colorado Front Range. I took a leisurely pace up hwy 105 toward Morrison and got reacquainted with the bike since its been over a month since I took any sort of twisties on it at all, hwy 105 is a scenic ride along the front range between Denver and Colorado Springs, its mostly easy fast sweepers and lite traffic so its a favorite road of mine when going north. Then I have to negotiate a bit of traffic near Highlands ranch and up hwy 470 into the mountains. I decided to take the Morrison Exit and try either Lookout Mountain or head up Golden Gate Canyon - this time it was Lookout Mountain, I was sort of making it up on the fly as I went along. Lookout Mountain is my old bicycling haunt from my days while I was working at Coors, its a killer ride and all uphill - I don't think I could do it today If I had to, not quite there yet! I saw a whole bunch of riders doing it though and wished I was in shape enough to be there doing it as well. 30 more lbs and I will be able to do it! On this day I would do it on the Veefalo instead.

       

       

       

       

      I took a video from the gateway to the top at the Lookout Mountain State Park, getting past riders, the guy in the green jacket actually pretty much astounded me with how far he had gotten in the short time it took me to set up my camera, some 3 miles at least and up to the gateway from the turn off at hwy 6! Amazing I thought. I took the first two turns slow then got more comfortable as I went up further, till I was doing well, I made some gearing mistakes and took the tight 15mph marked hairpins in the wrong gear so I lugged it a bit on one or two. Still enjoyed it though and then got off at the top and hiked over a rock outcropping for an overview of the road for the pictures below.

      From there I headed up interstate 70 to Idaho Springs for a beer at the Tommy-knockers brewery, I was the only customer in the joint - slow day for them so they treated me like a king! I got a nice tour of the place sort of impromptu, they made me a nice Pastrami sandwich on rye and with the brown ale it was fantastic. I must say the beer is much better there than in the bottles - its always good at the brewery. I am glad I stopped

      I finished my lunch and since the road to Mount Evans is right there I headed up Squaw pass hoping to get in some nice pictures I wasn't expecting what I found, ICE IN ALL THE SHADY PARTS

      There were some section where the ice covered the whole road for 300 yards or so I had to roll through it with my legs out to help keep the bike from sliding and falling over, I took it real slow. A Ford pickup was right behind me so I pulled over to let him pass but the guy was going slower then even I was so I pressed on - in places where I could see I just cut over to the oncoming lane and out of the ice where the sun was shining on the road more, but some places there was not alternative so I just had to go slow, good thing it wasn't slick but rather they tossed some gravel over the worst parts so I had some traction!

      Not that it matters and not that I expect anyone had noticed, but to those who sent me "where are you?" I would like to say I am back. Not only that I am officially returning to VFRD after nearly 2 months break but I have also ridden my Hawk last weekend and had FUN! Let me restate that; I had major fun riding! Something I have almost given up on.

      Most of you have been riding your whole adult lives and riding is not only a hobby to you, it is part of you. But I started riding three years ago and even though I have encounter some setbacks, till this spring I loved riding with whole my heart. However, I have always considered riding as my hobby. As a hobby which suppose to make my life better, more fun and more rich. Life is too short to do something which we don't fully love.

      My love of riding received a first major scar this spring: I lost a friend on the racetrack. He was a total stranger who offered me his help after I lowsided at CMP track last year. I still remember hearing his "Hi, my name is Todd, do you need help?" while I was duct-taping my roadrash from ripped jacket. He helped me straighten up the shifter and we kept in touch. The next time we saw each other was the day he died.

      With 9 months delay, I can say that Todd's death shook me more than I have realized. It rooted fear in me which was fueled by seeing and hearing about others getting hurt over and over again. If I was to summarize this year - it would be one big accident report. I became sensitive to every broken bone, every roadrash, every lowside. And even though I did 10 track days this year, I became slower and slower and slower. Suddenly, I have acquired this 'grandma' riding style on the road, frozen with fear that behind every corner there is car standing in my lane, or major sand trap or deer staring at me ... I was crippled with fear not only for me about also for my fellow rider.

      So, at the end of this year, I rode more and more by myself. I could not bear the feelings of responsibility for others on the road and my lines were crippled by my own fears. It all culminated this fall at WDGAH. In a freaky accident Love2rideh82crash was taken down by a truck crossing into our lane. I was done. I finished the weekend, locked the VFR into a garage and took a break.

      Until the last weekend, I pretended that motorcycles do not exists. As a last instance after 2 months break from riding, I decided to go to CMP track to see if I can still have fun. I also felt like I should go for the memory of Todd. I went and I had fun! I had much more fun than I expected and the most fun on track I can remember. Suddenly the whole track connected into an uninterupted line of turns and I felt one with the bike riding around! I was giggling like a little girl in my helmet and keep on giggling ever since smile.gif

      Granted I was not the fastest one and through out the weekend, I have never exceeded about 60% of my riding abilities, but I had no "oh-shit" nor 'blond' moments. I could have maybe go faster, I could have brake later for the turns and I could have lean further, but I am no Rossi nor Stoner. I decided to ride for fun and I had amazing blast riding well within my comfort zone.

      I was proud of myself when, after bandaging Ricks arm, I was able to distance myself and go back to riding without the year-long fear. I did feel bad for him but the feelings were not crippling my lines nor my mind. And when a total stranger came to me and said "Hi, my name is Todd", my heart stopped for a minute though but I suddenly knew that my life went a full circle. I probably will never win MotoGP :idea3: , but I am back! :wheel:
