    Anything goes!

  7. Today
  8. Let us know how it goes. I've considered them a few times for varous bikes but after looking at worn ones...I backed out. I think it was the old Dunlop 220 that had serious variances in tread depth from leading to trailing edges that made the bike feel terrible and which created a significant reduction in grip, wet and dry. All pavement here, though!
  9. Thanks for the reassurance! It's been about 15 years since I've been on a VFR so although I knew about the whine (which I like) I wasn't sure if it was louder than it should be. I can crack on with sorting out the forks/brakes next and hopefully she'll be ready for the road in a few weeks...once I find the time! My main problem at the moment is I don't have anywhere to do the work. The bike is outside (covered) but I don't have anywhere I can leave stuff disassembled so need to figure out a way to store fairings etc so they don't get ruined being off the bike for a few weeks. @Burger I've read your thread, impressive work! I don't think I would have been brave enough to take on a project that big.
  10. Today I rode my VFR for the first time in almost 3 years. Back then I couldn't conceive a layoff like that ever happening to me, especially after Covid killed any chance for bike trips in 2020 or 2021. I'd been fortunate to take at least one long trip every year from 1994 thru 2019, usually to California. Since then only once, in 2022. Today was pretty warm, for Victoria at least, nearly 90° all afternoon. Just puttering around the local environs, and listening for any hint that I'd bolloxed my cam chain tensioner replacement - so far so good. Here's a pic of the VFR at Clover Point, with the Trial Island lighthouse in the distance.

  11. Nothing wrong, The thread is a conversation starter , Me, trying to explore things I may have missed. I admit, I'm not a recreational fluid change sort of guy. " If it's not broke, don't try to fix it" is my motto, (within reason). Something is nagging me that it is again time to flush and refresh those front teles. Hoping to start a "this oil is better than that oil" war... 😉
  12. I spooned on a set of Dunlop Mutants this spring. The Avons were , well, worn out. I live in a rural area, with a significant amount of unpaved road travel. In fact, I can not get home without a mile on dirt MINIMUM! I have experienced a few "loose" moments during unexpected rain showers with the typical "slicks with sipes" sport tires. Not that I really mind that 😉 The first rides on the Mutants were "transparent". i.e. I really could not detect any weakness in our twisty paved back roads. Of course I was mindful of "new rubber". Now, after racking up a few miles, I still can find no fault with these Dunlop offerings. They grip pave, both wet and dry, and feel stable on our dirt roads. I'll need to wait and see how they wear, seems like 4.5K miles is "normal" for rears..."the way I ride" They never seem to wear in the center, "must be that "dual compound technology" 😉
  13. wasn't in a flood, just sat outside where a bunch of rainwater leaked past the flapper and into the airbox. already changed the engine, most everything else has been replaced or rebuilt.
  14. Update: I took the time to rebuild the secondary master cylinder with new seals. I quickly found my issue when I finally popped out the green screened filter. The ball bearing and spring completely full of gunk. I read on a forum here the ball bearing and spring can be removed completely , I know this probably isn’t the correct way but I did not want to take chances with it. I needed clarification on how to remove the filter and was grateful to get the instructions here from Gaz66. Unfortunately mine was slightly stuck in the press fit hole so the “trumpet” method was not enough and I managed to bend a right angle pick back a tiny bit, carefully put it into the cylinder, then through the hole behind the filter to pop it out. This worked for me. Used a .009 guitar string to free up the microscopic hole inside the filter. Worked perfectly. Reassembled everything while constantly questioning if I put the seals the right direction regardless of telling myself “remember which way they go”. Flushed the system very thoroughly. Bled everything thoroughly. Cleaned/burned all the brake fluid off the exhaust and she doesn’t lock up anymore. Thank you and now I can focus on the things I want to with the bike and actually enjoy it.
  15. It's the half moon shape. Looking for red and not cracked. 77215-MZ7-000ZD
  16. I agree, but that's what's there. I got a fresh tire on it and it looks good actually.
  17. Yesterday
  18. I'm 6'1" also and after putting on higher bars the DB didn't work for me. The MRA touring screen seemed the best, tried a few. Their Vario one didn't do much for me. https://www.mrashop.de/com/model-based-products/honda/vfr-800/bj-98-01/6511/vfr-800-touring-windshield-tn-1998-2001?c=90004498
  19. youre gonna have endless problems if that bike was in a flood. if water got into a cylinder you can consider the bike a write-off.
  20. Hey I live 5 minutes from there by bike, I got a number of bike pics from that same overlook. Featured.
  21. The aero of this bike is by far my biggest dislike, I'm 6ft1 an my bike came with the ZG double bubble windscreen but even with the windscreen removed the wind blast gets directed right at my neck and up into my helmet which makes a ton of noise, I can't hear the engine or exhaust over like 50mph... I don't know if others just got used to this or if a different taller windscreen really helps, but it doesn't matter where I try to position my head, the noise doesn't improve unless I'm full tuck with my chest on the tank or I'm standing up and my head is in the clean air.
  22. Hi Skipper, Thank you for your donation of 25.00 USD. We look forward to improving the forums with your donation. Thanks VFRDiscussion

  23. good luck friend, it looks like your revival project is off to a way smoother start than mine was
  24. If 6th Gen T/body & boots fit 5th Gen, then it stands to reason the reverse is true. Or just buy Tourmax boots, OEM quality at a fraction of the price, they also do every hydraulic service kit for all VFR's.
  25. That is definitely the sound of the gear-driven cams. Difficult to tell if they're louder than normal, but the noise itself is normal for that bike. Best of luck with the revival, I completed one on an 01 a couple of years ago.
  26. Hi Skids: Thanks very much mate, appreciate your offer to help out. I have looked into buying these before. The RNLI shop only delivers to the UK and internationally, to Ireland. Apparently that is just how their system is set up, and with Royal Mail also. If you PM me your address, I'll buy them and have them shipped to you. I have some GBP to get rid of, so I'll send you the shipping fee. I'm in no hurry btw, I'm off on a trip tomorrow, the end of the month, and in Sept. also. Its great to be retired. Thanks again.
  27. Sounds pretty normal to me, the cam gear whine is either a feature or a bug depending on how you feel about VFR's, but it is a major component of the soundtrack for sure. For some of us - it is music, it sings the song of our people
  28. I can confirm that my 6th gen TB and boots fit on the 5th gen motor with no issues. IDK if the 6g boots fit on the 5th gen TB. It would seem that the one variable could be the diameter of the 5th gen TB bores, maybe someone could take a measurement.

      Juniper Pass

I took a day off from work and also from my bicycle training to take out the Veefalo one last time before the weather turns ugly, supposed to snow the rest of the week and possibly start sticking to the ground along the Colorado Front Range. I took a leisurely pace up hwy 105 toward Morrison and got reacquainted with the bike since its been over a month since I took any sort of twisties on it at all, hwy 105 is a scenic ride along the front range between Denver and Colorado Springs, its mostly easy fast sweepers and lite traffic so its a favorite road of mine when going north. Then I have to negotiate a bit of traffic near Highlands ranch and up hwy 470 into the mountains. I decided to take the Morrison Exit and try either Lookout Mountain or head up Golden Gate Canyon - this time it was Lookout Mountain, I was sort of making it up on the fly as I went along. Lookout Mountain is my old bicycling haunt from my days while I was working at Coors, its a killer ride and all uphill - I don't think I could do it today If I had to, not quite there yet! I saw a whole bunch of riders doing it though and wished I was in shape enough to be there doing it as well. 30 more lbs and I will be able to do it! On this day I would do it on the Veefalo instead.

I took a video from the gateway to the top at the Lookout Mountain State Park, getting past riders, the guy in the green jacket actually pretty much astounded me with how far he had gotten in the short time it took me to set up my camera, some 3 miles at least and up to the gateway from the turn off at hwy 6! Amazing I thought. I took the first two turns slow then got more comfortable as I went up further, till I was doing well, I made some gearing mistakes and took the tight 15mph marked hairpins in the wrong gear so I lugged it a bit on one or two. Still enjoyed it though and then got off at the top and hiked over a rock outcropping for an overview of the road for the pictures below.

From there I headed up interstate 70 to Idaho Springs for a beer at the Tommy-knockers brewery, I was the only customer in the joint - slow day for them so they treated me like a king! I got a nice tour of the place sort of impromptu, they made me a nice Pastrami sandwich on rye and with the brown ale it was fantastic. I must say the beer is much better there than in the bottles - its always good at the brewery. I am glad I stopped

I finished my lunch and since the road to Mount Evans is right there I headed up Squaw pass hoping to get in some nice pictures I wasn't expecting what I found, ICE IN ALL THE SHADY PARTS

      gallery_491_3463_419309.png

Icy patches on Squaw Pass definitely taking it easy on that road

There were some section where the ice covered the whole road for 300 yards or so I had to roll through it with my legs out to help keep the bike from sliding and falling over, I took it real slow. A Ford pickup was right behind me so I pulled over to let him pass but the guy was going slower then even I was so I pressed on - in places where I could see I just cut over to the oncoming lane and out of the ice where the sun was shining on the road more, but some places there was not alternative so I just had to go slow, good thing it wasn't slick but rather they tossed some gravel over the worst parts so I had some traction!

I did stop for pictures in all the best spots

Not that it matters and not that I expect anyone had noticed, but to those who sent me "where are you?" I would like to say I am back. Not only that I am officially returning to VFRD after nearly 2 months break but I have also ridden my Hawk last weekend and had FUN! Let me restate that; I had major fun riding! Something I have almost given up on.

Most of you have been riding your whole adult lives and riding is not only a hobby to you, it is part of you. But I started riding three years ago and even though I have encounter some setbacks, till this spring I loved riding with whole my heart. However, I have always considered riding as my hobby. As a hobby which suppose to make my life better, more fun and more rich. Life is too short to do something which we don't fully love.

My love of riding received a first major scar this spring: I lost a friend on the racetrack. He was a total stranger who offered me his help after I lowsided at CMP track last year. I still remember hearing his "Hi, my name is Todd, do you need help?" while I was duct-taping my roadrash from ripped jacket. He helped me straighten up the shifter and we kept in touch. The next time we saw each other was the day he died.

With 9 months delay, I can say that Todd's death shook me more than I have realized. It rooted fear in me which was fueled by seeing and hearing about others getting hurt over and over again. If I was to summarize this year - it would be one big accident report. I became sensitive to every broken bone, every roadrash, every lowside. And even though I did 10 track days this year, I became slower and slower and slower. Suddenly, I have acquired this 'grandma' riding style on the road, frozen with fear that behind every corner there is car standing in my lane, or major sand trap or deer staring at me ... I was crippled with fear not only for me about also for my fellow rider.

So, at the end of this year, I rode more and more by myself. I could not bear the feelings of responsibility for others on the road and my lines were crippled by my own fears. It all culminated this fall at WDGAH. In a freaky accident Love2rideh82crash was taken down by a truck crossing into our lane. I was done. I finished the weekend, locked the VFR into a garage and took a break.

Until the last weekend, I pretended that motorcycles do not exists. As a last instance after 2 months break from riding, I decided to go to CMP track to see if I can still have fun. I also felt like I should go for the memory of Todd. I went and I had fun! I had much more fun than I expected and the most fun on track I can remember. Suddenly the whole track connected into an uninterupted line of turns and I felt one with the bike riding around! I was giggling like a little girl in my helmet and keep on giggling ever since smile.gif

Granted I was not the fastest one and through out the weekend, I have never exceeded about 60% of my riding abilities, but I had no "oh-shit" nor 'blond' moments. I could have maybe go faster, I could have brake later for the turns and I could have lean further, but I am no Rossi nor Stoner. I decided to ride for fun and I had amazing blast riding well within my comfort zone.

I was proud of myself when, after bandaging Ricks arm, I was able to distance myself and go back to riding without the year-long fear. I did feel bad for him but the feelings were not crippling my lines nor my mind. And when a total stranger came to me and said "Hi, my name is Todd", my heart stopped for a minute though but I suddenly knew that my life went a full circle. I probably will never win MotoGP :idea3: , but I am back! :wheel:
