How Facebook Is Replacing Forums!

I have gone so long on here w/o logging in that I've forgotten my password and since I don't write any of them down, I've had to crunch brain cells to come up with it again. My computer only gets turned off on the rare occasions that my computer guy upgrades me. I may go over a year w/o even turning the thing off/having to log in.

Yeah, I may be a fb junkie too... I never understood myspace and still don't get twitter, snapchat, or instagram.

My wife is a high school teacher and apparently Facebook is for 'old people'... Which I am totally fine with since Facebook jumped the shark back when they sold out to Yahoo and allowed anyone with an email address to join. It's just gotten worse and worse ever since.

I will never use Facebook to replace forums for legit technical information... It's like going to YouTube for porn... Both will get the job done, but one is just more efficient.

However "old people" to a teenager are in their late-20s/early-30s.

Facebook may be popular but I don't see how it's better than what we have for what we use it for. Of course I don't understand VTEC either.

But people in their late 20s/early 30s ARE old. (insert proper emoticon here)

I'm out!

Moto forums peaked in 2011,

That's all.

BTW: I just noticed that VFR World has a FB page!

Holy crap! It takes a long time for this guy to leave the room. Must have forgot his key.

VFRD is run by a bunch of hooligans volunteers, if you were happy to pay them to keep the spambots out then sure, they'd probably change the security settings here.

Or, set your gear and your profile up so you don't have to log in each time you visit.

As for FB replacing forums - hardly, I mod on a high traffic 4x4 forum and we also have a FB page, they complement each other. You can't store serious tech know-how on FB,,, but you can direct people to the forum.

FB is actually pretty good if you make the effort to understand how it works and what you can do with it. It's a tool, like any other online resource. Once you know how it works and how to set it up, there's no significant 'intrusion' from a personal/privacy perspective - unless you're dumb enough to open yourself up to it, in which case you've probably already done that with the internet in general... being totally anti-FB makes no sense to me.

Aaahhh in the 80's DEC had the largest private network in the world and we had what we called conferences on any topic.

Be it LA50 matrix printers, PDP's, chocolate lovers or motorcycles (we did have 2 mc conferences, on one you were not allowed to discuss HD's...).

Storing images was 100% "verboten" due to the cost of disk space..

You can have it all as I want none.

Totally agree. I call it Faceless. When my son and i go for a beer its like there's three of us. Hes permanently on it. Drives me mad. Personally i have two friends on Faceless, my son and daughter purely for emergencies. I refuse all "friend" requests so dont even try it!

All they do is date mine. Anything you say on there, any photos you post, all mined. There is a reason the dork owner is worth billions. He's selling your chit to anyone with a checkbook! If they charged a membership fee for Fakebook, all the users (losers) would leave immediately. If you could see all the companies' bots mining that site. 60 minutes did a piece on it. They build profiles on you, who you know, etc. It's crazy the algorithms they have come up with to data mine your chit.

All VFRD is, is a natural evolution of the "VFR list" except we don't have to deal with 50 emails in a day and talk about nothing but Scottoilers (sp?). Social media a la Fakebook is a plague on our entire society. It's gotten so bad people drive and surf that crap at the same time. I've overheard people (many) say that's all they use the internet for, for Fakebook, because they can't be bothered to login anywhere else. It's just lazy comms for mouf breathers as far as I'm concerned. Making a call, sending a txt or email, just too difficult.

We need Listserv and BBS back.

That's it, capn. Get in your '85 Camry and time travel back to where you came from!

Totally agree with The Phantom. VFRD and FB (and others) have their uses. I'm on FB several times per day, but don't usually use it for informational purposes. VFRD can be informational, social, organizational, technical, and photo intensive. I get information here that is not available anywhere else, especially FB.

As for the OP's issue, either your computer or the forum is causing the issue with a setting (or more than one). Changing them might help, but if you only log in every month or two it probably won't. I know it's a pain, but IMO a minute spent looking up a password is worth the hassle for what you get here.

I have over 25 different passwords (just for forums and twitface accounts) that must use selected browsers and an array of computers, platform and stations. It is a big deal for me -- time is money.

I'll be here until I have to log in again. Then I'll probably just lurk.

And, thanks for caring so much.

2 seconds is money?

I was actually using sarcastic humour maybe a little too dry... but honestly findit surprising that you seem to be an expert/professional in the use of computers and on-line social networks of all types and yet are having such difficulty w an issue of this nature that you are "threatening" to leave and "insinuating" that the forum's modus operandi is outdated and cumbersome... perhaps it's one of Those "Blaming the tools" phenomena...

Just sayin...

Ok, this Round's on me for being a bumcrack...

Can i be your friend? We both feel the same.

Vguy - just a thought, you running any antimalware, virus cleaners, crap cleaners etc in the background processes? Sometimes they will also clear passwords etc on certain sites resulting in no auto log ons.

Nothing like that.

A bunch of iMacs and a few old and newer PCs and smart devises just to check client website performance. Don't like to store any connected info.

Like I said, I can go for years without logging in if I'm on here every day or so from my main station.

In the past I would get almost daily notices of thread activity on VFRD. Now weeks can go by before something pops up. Same with Sport Touring Net. Liking these forums and others, I was concerned. The "I'm out" line was probably a result of too many glasses of evening wine (it's the law here in California).

Either way I doubt HS is Modifying diddly... and it is he who must be convinced, not us regular Users.

I.E. something to be addressed in Private w him and not Makin' an Issue in public Perhaps? Not Sure what you're really trying to Achieve...

P.S. send another One up, bartender!!!

This is a topic. Go ahead try to keep track of hundreds of discussions using Facebook or Social media. Good luck!
As for having to log in - get used to it. It's called security. Get a password manager, remember your password in your brain (not that hard), or find a site that works better.
Really not a major issue to log into any site now - nearly every site has security measures to protect from spam, advertising and identity theft.

Sorry vguy, without being sat at your computer or letting me have access via remote desktop (do not ever let anybody do that unless you know them personally) i am stumped. Soooo many variables unless you are prepared to do a reinstall of your operating system and thats a pain in the arse. I am on here every day and never log in, i use Google Chrome as my browser of choice. You got a good local friendly tecchy guy?

I log in (emai & password) every time. I do sign out everytime also. I use a proxy service for privacy on the web so I expect that. Given the nature of the web now days, I'd expect nothing less.

HS is doing a great job with this site. Keep up the great work Miguel.

Again. KeePass. It takes a bit to set up, but it is absolutely wonderful for securely storing passwords. I have separate databases between passwords and user IDs for work and personal stuff. I have it set up with a password and a key file, so I can store my password database on my dropbox, but the key file is only on the computers. Passwords sync between computers, but are still encrypted. You can have it create random passwords for you, and store all the extra security questions we all forget exactly how we typed in. There's also web browser and smartphone features to make it even better, if using the auto-type keyboard shortcut is too time consuming.

And since a few seconds of time are very precious for you, here is the direct link to the download.

Keepass 2.29 download
