Would you believe I dented my tank by dropping my helmet on it! About a 12 inch drop too. I was snapping the headliner back in my X-11 and dropped it right on the tank. Bented my glasses that was sitting on my tank bag, and broke my flip-up too. Talk about being PO'ed!!!!! Want I need to know is, How to removed the dent in the tank? With out going to the body shop.

Uhmmm.. you might try those "Ding Doctor" guys that work on auto bodies. They might have the tools to work out that dent.

Expect to empty and dismount the tank from the bike though, for him to work on it....safely.

I would try dry ice.

Here is a link to the how-to: http://www.diylife.com/2007/08/01/how-to-f...f-your-vehicle/

Youtube is full ofthis stuff as well.

The worst that would happen is it's not noing to work.

Take your tank off. Be careful while removing the fuel pump.

From there you MIGHT be able to pound it out from the inside with an extension-- but do NOT expect it to look perfect.

Another option is compressed air.

But once dented, there will still be a kind of a wave there, most likely.

Do not use compressed air, you'll risk popping a seam! (and the sides will blow out well before that dent does!)

Try a paintless dent repair place. They use some method of combining long picks and hot glue to work stuff like that out.

I would start with the easiest solution. Get a small suction cup dent puller. Sometimes you get lucky and it pops back out good as new.

+1 Hot glue puller like ding king. It looks like it has a crease/deep center though so it likely won't come 100%. There is a double wall in there I think so pushing from the inside is a no go (at least that's what 2 paintless dent repair guys said after looking at mine). The hot glue puller worked though.

That seems unlikely. It's more likely the dent repair guys deduced that from looking at the bit near the filler cap or elsewhere.

I've got a similar (though smaller) ding in mine - dropped a length of 3/4" wooden dowel on it while I was putting it up in the rafters above the bike.

I'm just leaving it until I replace the fuel filter, then when I have the filter/pump mechanism out of the bottom of the tank, I'll try tapping ti out from the inside.

The tank needs repainting anyway - has bad scratching on it from my tank bag.

 I have used Paintless Dent Repair for my cars in the past. Someone who is accomplished in PDR is like a wizard when it comes to removing dents! Call around to get an idea of PDR specialists in your area. Interesting as to whether they would want the tank off the bike or mounted to keep the tank conveniently in place. If you do decide to use PDR, pics of a successful before and after would be nice.

DOH! I just saw spotthedogg's response. Double wall is no good for PDR. Even out-of-this-world PDR skills would make this a nearly impossible task. That sucks :-(. Tank bra anybody?

Unless the 6th gen tank is built different than the 5th gen, the tank is not double walled. It is in fact quite thin, as I found out when shooting studs on mine to pull some dents. Burned right through the metal. Don't ask what happend next... Let's just say I increased the capacity of my tank. Find a paintless guy that knows what he is doing.

PDR !!! Any paintless dent repair place can have that out in 10 minutes and for less than $50. I know because a neighbor kid hit mine with a golf club (accidentally) and the PDR guy took longer to get his tools than he did to remove the dent. I know where it was and even I can't see it now. $40 and I was gone.

Those 2 PDR guys must just not want to work on a smelly motorcycle gas tanks. I don't think I ever saw or heard of double walled gas tanks on bikes. I can't figure out any reason for it..........unless maybe it's a BMW and they just want you to pay more for them tongue.gif

I only know that because I found out the hard way on one of my past bikes...

The tank is not double walled. Honda likes to stamp their tanks in 3 pieces - bottom, left side, right side. The two sides get seam welded together front to back, then the bottom is seam welded on.

I've got a small ding on my tank that I've decided to just live with. It was created when my 2yr old decided to get on it, Hot Wheel in hand. He liked the sound that the tank made when he beat it with the small hand held cage. Maybe when he's old enough, Ill have him wax it to pay me back for the ding he gave it.

Just keep the ball peen hammers away from the little guy.

An old friend learned that the hard way. I guess it makes a cool sound hitting a gas tank repeatedly.

Go for the PDR guys they should be able to get it out. You may want to call around though, I saw a video on youtube where a guy specializes on tank repairs. There a special PDR tools specifically made for motorcycle tanks and you shouldn't have to remove the tank. Good luck!

Slap a sticker on it and ride it.

No crap. Lay down on it and get to it. Who cares? Nobody but you. Most people won't even notice or think anything of it.

I really didn't believe that it was double walled I just got tired of trying to convince the guy to try. Then the second guy said the same, I do believe they just didn't want gas on their hands!

Look at the brighter side.

If you blow out the sides you can take your 6.5 gallon tank and turn it into an 8 gallon tank. Longer rides WOOOOOOHOOO. :fing02:

How about if I emptied out the fuel. Sprayed starting fluid into the tank and lighted it with a match!. Would that get me extra capacity? LOL

Thanks for all of the replys! I'm still PO'ed about this tho! Now my wife's Jeep GC has dent on the driver's side door. This happen this morning at the hospital, when she was getting a PET Scan. I can't win!

I have to fine someone in my area to do PDR. Maybe I can get a 2for deal. LOL
