Member Contributer vfrjim2002 Posted March 24, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted March 24, 2014 Hi guys, A quick update. Well, things have gone a bit sideways. About a week after the ex-fix was removed from my right arm we discovered the fracture had collapsed. Back to square one. The ortho who did the initial fix proposed reinstalling the ex fix and leaving it on for ten weeks. I got second opinions from a different local guy and from a family friend on the west coast. Both said, don't walk, run to a good hand specialist. I did. In San Antonio. An infection has cropped up in the left arm, but as soon as its cleared up, we start again. Member Contributer The mailman Posted March 24, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted March 24, 2014 Ex Fixes give me the creeps. HA! My brother broke his tibia/fibula running in a marathon - his leg just gave out. He was put into a halo style ex fix for about 10 weeks. When he went in for a check up, BOTH bones had been misaligned and had grown past their intended target. Surgically chopped them back down to size and let them have another go at it. He's only 43 and now walks with a cane. Irish medicine there for ya! A specialist should be able to fix you up right and Texas is full of good medical facilities. Member Contributer vfrjim2002 Posted March 26, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted March 26, 2014 Thanks for the good wishes guys. I had my third appointment with the hand and wrist specialist in SA yesterday. Her take is the left wrist is close to ok. The radius healed a mm too short, but rather than go back in now, she recommends rehabbing it for a bit to see how it works. She did a CT study of the collapsed right wrist. Its a mess and we scheduled the first round of reconstruction on it for next week. Appears it will involve quite a bit of bone cutting, plates, screws, bone cement, bone stimulator and some grafting. Should be interesting.
Member Contributer FJ12Ryder Posted March 26, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted March 26, 2014 Man, that really sounds like a bummer. Could sure keep you off the bike a while longer.

Member Contributer MaxSwell Posted March 26, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted March 26, 2014 That's bad news. Sorry to hear. If you still have your bike I'd suggest you go to the garage, mount up, and make varooom noises. While a long way from the real thing, it may help your mind to decide whether or not you will be mentally be able to ride again. For me it was never in doubt but PTSD is always a factor in returning to your "pre-crash way of life". Good luck! Hope you and your machine are reunited on the road somewhere down the line. Auspanglish
The riding buddy I mentioned who came out much worse for wear (see my earlier post) got taken out by a 4x4 some two years ago.. He just bought a Yamaha XT600 Trail bike to commute on. Just sayin. I have had a few rather painful injuries from mc crashes with months of physio and have on occasion doubted getting back on but am a motorcycle addict down to the marrow I'm afraid. Member Contributer vfrjim2002 Posted April 4, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted April 4, 2014 Had the first round reconstruction on the right wrist yesterday. It was pretty complicated but the Doc seems very confident in the result. We'll know more in a couple of weeks. The left is coming along, but will need some more work once the right becomes useable. Thanks again for all the good vibes, guys. You're the best. VFRD rocks.
