Contemplated...... Do I really need 3 VFRs ? Picked up an 8th gen DLX thinking it could be the "One" vfr.

Rode the 4th and 5th yesterday for the 1st time in months. Tomorrow the 8th and 5th go head to head.

After 10+ years, and about a dozen other bikes, the 4th and 5th have remained. Ergos, looks, sound, feel, they just do it for me.

The last time I had three VFRs, the 6th gen was voted off the island. The new to me 8th gen may be the weakest link.... Tomorrow...VFRs9262023(44)b.thumb.jpg.9b4c01b00619a4816419259c715b2d5e.jpgVFRs9262023(45)b.thumb.jpg.25cdfdfe9aeaab7db09a62dacb46cf04.jpg

Lovely choice of bikes. Dam that SC Project conic on the 8 Gen looks good!

Make it interesting and add a 3rd gen Magna to the mix. 😁

I like your style. The correct number of VFR's is N+1, where N is the number you currently have. I did ride a brand new 8th against my then-current modified 5th gen (suspension upgrades and delinked brakes) and honestly there was nothing in it. The 8th "felt" new with a nicer, tighter clutch and gearbox, but that was really all I noticed. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Pretty much agree with you. Feels like a very good "modern" bike, nice gearbox, and the whole thing feels tight. My 5th gen has suspension, Sargent, and Helibars. 4th gen has suspension, corbin, and Helibars. Both have Staintune pipes.

Even with risers the 8th gen ergos are a bit much for my 60+ year old bones. It would be great on the track. The smooth quiet air flow is awesome, after 2 years with a Tracer GT and 1 year with a Multistrada which are LOUD even with shorty windshields.

Jury is still out, but not looking good for the 8th gen.....

"8th gen, you are dead to me! " Pah-toey

I'd love to hear a comparison from the Tracer to the 5th gen. A tracer is the one bike I think I'd buy right now if I had to. the newer style bikes are hideous, IMHO. But that triple engine is lovely!

That is very likely because the wires were corroded inside of the sheathing...so a new connector didn't solve much except for lightening your wallet.

I didn't put on this connector.  Each half came crimped on the brand new stator and reg-rec out of the box.  All I did was plug them up.

30k mile service at 29,965!

I took advantage of the gap between the two halves of my migraine days. Tires and wheel clean today. Wax when they dry. It was seriously sucky riding on them with the flat spots and narrow high spots with very limited grip. Too much local riding and not enough at lean!

Gosh, I hate these brake pad pin caps! It took quite a while to get the rear one out. Going to put in the rubber/ plastic ones that the '00 has in it...and in the CB-1 when it is time to touch those brakes.

Hope to get to the caliper piston cleaning and brake flush in the next week when the migraine is gone. And to measure the pad thickness remaining. There's more than I thought considering they only come with 3.08mm new.

I can't tell you how many times this has broken off. Any idea why? And do I really need it if it has been running fine broken? (The broken bit is from the rear caliper pin cap...)

Up next are cooling system flush, flapper mod, PAIR delete, ground block check, plug check after 30k miles...and chain maintenance cycle (clean/adj). It'll be nice to have it all done!

Isn't that the thing for guiding the rear brake line? Goes under the bolt for tightening the eccentric?

Mine broke so I left it off, no problems with steel lines as they are anyway less flexible.

Correct. It doesn't seem like it "does" much. I may just cable tie the two lines together as a safety, but the part is NLA from Honda anyway. 43350-MW4-000 - BRAKE HOSE GUIDE. It is a pretty cheesy item from an engineering company.

I broke that little guide my last return ride across country adjusting the chain at a rest stop in IL.  I zip tied the two hoses together in 2 - 3 spots and dug a small hole through the rear of the chain guard with the small knife I carry in the tool roll.  I then zip-tied the hoses to the chain guard.  It's still like that today.

The chain guard tie was probably overkill, but I didn't want to find out otherwise.

Tidy solution 👌 @vfrgiving

but I won't be drilling or sticking anything onto my Harris carbon fibre hugger, it's too damn nice!

The line doesn't move about if at all, I'm not worried it falls into the rear wheel (too tight/short anyway and fixed to the hugger chain guard), locks it up and I crash, burn and go to the afterlife.

Agree with @bmart

Very cheesy piece.

The washer and hose guide are quite important; without the washer, the chain adjuster clamp bolt can bottom out in its threads without applying decent clamping force, which leads to the eccentric rotating loose sometimes.

The washer and washer-like part of the hose guide are still there. Just the "wire" part of the guide broke off...but that is a good point. 🙂

Plugs went in easily. The old ones looked and measured fine. I cleaned them up and will keep them for spares. They do have 30k miles on them.

Flapper mod was simple too.

Calipers are cleaned and ready for the new pads; OEM up front and Vesrah in the back.

Still left are brake/clutch flush, coolant flush, pair delete.

Old pad pics coming soon.

Most pads still had some life left in them, but going all new and saving them for spares.

Plugs looked pretty good. I don't think that I've ever looked at them...

Flapper mod was fun to find something to block the valve. The hose was simple, of course.

I didn't unthread the pinch bolt and toss the washer, it's still there.  I just tossed the busted paper clip looking thing.

(Tired of these updates yet?)

Finished the brake and clutch bleed. The brakes never, ever feel different after a bleed, but the clutch always does! Much more crisp and exact at the lever.

Also did the coolant flush w/Prestone. It came out clear, so I don't think that the flush accomplished much. The coolant itself came out green/brown.

Attempting to channel less lazy people, I also serviced the chain (clean/lube/adjust). While I was channeling, I also gave the body panels a quick wash.

I found one rattle (a loose Givi wingrack bolt) and snugged four really wiggly coil mounting bolts.

All that is left is the PAIR job...and I am..."a-scared" to do it. There's so much frackin' contradictory info on Al Gore's Internet about the mod itself, and whether it is okay to do on all years '98-'01. Any insight is appreciated. I'd sure like to tie a bow in this work by the end of Sunday.

Seems like it. I sure hope so!

Just in from the garage from finishing the PAIR delete job. It was interesting. I didn't have anything to plug the inside or outside of the airbox, so I put the short hose back on and had something to plug the hose. It seemed to run okay in the driveway. Testing tomorrow to get an inspection for registration renewal. It should also turn 30k on the ride.
