+1 on a Honda Civic. I just love driving my '08 five speed.

First, Welcome to the asylum from The Land Of Interesting Weather. I cannot help with your specific issue but a can make a suggestion on sprocket replacement. The front sprocket Honda OEM has a rubber component that, I figure, has a dampening effect. The rubber creates a specific width and affects the speedometer drive engagement. There is a female plastic cap that engages a male nut (other than myself.) A prior owner of my current rider installed an aftermarket front sprocket that did not have the rubber dampener which eventually disabled the speedometer. This happened on the way to a SumSum in Montrose, CO. We were planning on meeting up with Hispanic Slammer in Colorado Springs, CO and, when I described the issue to Miguel, he explained the above. We were able to adjust the engangement to solve the problem. The moral of the story: use OEM sprockets for OEM chain and sprockets replacement. BTW, we'd love to see a picture of your VFR. We can never get enough chances to ogle these marvelous examples of Honda engineering and artistry.

Some serious VFR action: Japanese Motorcycle Police Competition
MaxSwell replied to cat0020's topic in Riding Technique
I agree. Just WOW! I've probably duplicated every one of those fails (blush) except for the falls on the wet tarmac, although I have gone down in wet grass. I wonder if those bikes have linked brakes. I suspect they do. And I see very little movement across the seats. How Do They Do That?! -
Damn Mice chewed through 3 wires on my 97 VFR... help!

I recognize that mess. There have been critter nests in two of the five fifth gens I've bought. Both were stored in pole barns. In both instances the nests were in the airbox. I guess there are a lot of mices with Good Taste (intended) in mc's out there. So I find it hard to hate them. And they keep Mojo, my Siberian Husky, occupied during our walks in the woods. One of my mottos is: Always check for critters under the covers of fifth gen VFRs. It pays to consider the good taste of varmints of the world. I've embossed that and carry it in my wallet always. (Although, at age 71, I may have bought my last one a couple of years ago. By next spring I'll have a restored '98 to put on the market, guaranteed to be mouse free.) -
I judge Grum as one of the best informed contributors on the site. And one of the most helpful and patient. And he freely gives his advice on some of the topics I fine most difficult. These observations are coming from someone (me) who considers electrickery FM - Frickin' Majik. He's one of my VFRD Heros. Thank you Grum for all your contributions. You Rock!

Yes. Do you have a Factory Service Manual(FSM)? Instructions are on page 16-5. The FSM is available for download on this site.

Same and same, espically the nudist part, except I never went lycra.

That story reinforces my belief that ATGATT is appropriate whenever there is a danger of having "a close encounter of the tarmac kind", no matter the means of propulsion. As I sit on my patio, isolated by pandemic, I watch all the wheeled passers-by on scooters, new learning bicycles, skate boards, and Razors (some electrically powered), etc, I imagine the potential injuries from a fall and see skinned knees, hands and noses and see a distinct lack of imagination for what could happen. One of my favorite quotes is from a famous Formula One driver (Jackie Stewart?) "It takes a certain lack of imagination to drive these cars." Or something like that.

VF500F2 Aka MBD Incubation Period At Least 52 Years
MaxSwell replied to Dutchy's topic in Earlier VFRs
When others ask if "riding in full leather suit is uncomfortable?" I respond: "Yeah. It's like wearing a sauna while sitting on an oven. But it has saved my life at least once if not several times." -
Well said swell brother.
-
Have you ever tried a fifth gen Dutchy? Until you have you would not know that fifth gens are the ONE to own.

Thanks for the pics Maddie. It's obvious you have great taste in mc's. That's a great set of "silencers" you've got there.

Regarding riding in hot weather, I always wear an Aerostich Transit Suit, full Goretex-lined, and describe it as "Wearing a sauna while sitting on an oven." Lately I'm finding I like living so close to the Artic Circle.

I'd suggest the cover destroys the aerodynamics of the front end. Probably decreases the machines fuel mileage and add wind noise. My highest mileage fifth gen, at 105,000+ miles on her when KIA'd by a deer, had no visible damage until the deer turned it into bits and pieces. A big waste of money IMHO.

I think there is another "backup plan" to use when your installed battery conks out. I carry a "jump-start" portable battery for the times I've left my headlights on accidentally. One summer while leaving town on a trip and sitting in very slow-moving traffic on I35 I saw a HD rider sitting on the side of freeway. So I stopped to see if I could help. She said her machine stalled and would not start. So I got my portable battery out, hooked it up, and she got her machine started. But it died as soon as the jump-starter was removed. So I suggested she could leave it connected and I'd follow her to a nearby exit so she could call for help. We were able to ride several miles (I cannot remember exactly how far it was) to an exit where, at the stop sigh at the end of the exit, here machine died and the portable battery was completely discharged. As usual, YMMV.
