Ohlins Install

first chance to ride since putting the Ohlins shock in and WOW..what a big difference...i'm sure a heavier spring would have helped the stocker, but the ohlins feels great !!! couldn't do much because of the salt and gravel on the road but it's def $1100 well spent...had the bracket painted black

Hard to beat a good suspension upgrade! It can change you whole outlook you have of your bike. Congrats!

already did the Ohlins front springs, might send the forks out for re valve job... need to do a serious test drive weather has not been cooperative here in NY

There's a good reason Ohlins is the gold standard in suspension. I'm just too cheap to go for the gold standard. I've had very good luck with Works and Penske. Admittedly not as good as Ohlins, but always a massive improvement for a fraction of the price.

That looks terrible. That gold is really going to clash with the red paint... You should just cut your losses and put it up in the Classifieds section....

But seriously, I'm more than a little jealous. I wanted to spend my tax return on VFR stuff, but apparently its going towards things deemed necessary.

What do you guys think about upgrading springs only? I don't feel like spending too much at this point. I'm looking at HyperPro progressive springs front and back. Is it worth it or should I pass?

I read this over and over again, there is know point changing the front springs without re-valveing the front, its not just the front forks springs being to soft, the compression is far to hard, and the rebound, there is just not enough of it, its the damping which controls your ride, not the spring, you want the correct spring for your weight. Save your money, unless you do the damping aswell, as the front springs.

Springs will be an improvement. It may not be as nice as full valve job and new shock on the back, but if you only have $300 to spend instead of $1200, it would probably be a worthwhile investment. The new front springs should still be good when you do a valve kit later on. The rear spring is less likely since most people would put an aftermarket shock instead of revalving the stock. So you wouldn't be throwing too much money away by not going the whole way.

springs make a difference when the stockers are so soft that half of your travel is gone to static sag...sure the valve job is the best way to go but the front spring helped i need to get in touch with Jamie this week

Wouldn't know, I've ridden with Öhlins (ex-Corser Aprilia forks) but I've always had other replacement brands like Wilbers etc. which were always a massive improvement.

I think my rear shock is now worn and I'm not sure if one more year of ownership is worth the cost of doing a proper suspension upgrade. I would definitely send my forks out as well. I've done it myself in the past but a suspension specialist knows a lot more than I do on the subject.

I've bitched about the Honda I know but for the life of me I wouldn't know what to replace it with. D'oh!

an FYI to those considering the Ohlins rear shock (HO-013) because of the bracket supplied for the preload adjuster and remote reservoir, the rear tire hugger can't be used....after only a hundred miles or so of testing so far, i still think it's safe to say i'd pick the ohlins...this pic is after 27,000 miles without a huggerpost-23916-0-51977900-1394282322.jpgpost-23916-0-71897600-1394282351.jpg

the bracket does not come painted....

going to get out today and try to do some dampening tweeks, although we still have a lot of snow melt happening and need a good hard rain to wash the gravel away...the shock was re-sprung to my weight (heavier) by Hard Racing when i bought it, but i'll measure the sag today before i go to be sure ...the initial ride felt great but i thought it might need a touch more rebound dampening...that would make sense with the heavier spring though...i think......time to head for the hills !!!

it might fit...will be close... from the pics it looks like the hugger might be flat enough and far enough to the rear to work..the measurement is on the center stand...

Has there ever been study done on average street riders. If we did a test on 100 riders (without telling them which had Ohlins or stock suspension) on every day riding conditions, would there be any significant difference that would be noticeable?

YES!

With the roads being rougher on the street than the track, having a shock properly setup to handle the bumps will be very noticeable on the street without having to push it to track pace.
