  1. The ST version isn't really pictured, so it could be closer to the ST line of bikes when they're all said and done. However the engine, as noted, isn't likely to thrill anyone.
  2. Take VFRs for example. 5th gen came factory 10w40. They swapped to 10w30 for 6th gen on. On the shelves I have a harder time finding 10w40 vs 10w30 and 5w30 locally.
  3. The factory manual lists 10w40 as an acceptable option in hot climates. It's becoming a somewhat uncommon weight these days, I've noticed. I would use synthetic oils in hotter climates as they will perform better, usually. I use Honda HP4S on the bikes I ride during summer (any good synesthetic JASO MA oil of the correct weight is fine)
  4. I would not run these headers without a tune of some sort.
  5. Wish they'd allow us to return the restrictive filter for the new one; I have one taking up space on a shelf. No sense to run it over stock.

  7. I did not have to do that, no. The suction on the tool seems to do a good enough job. I always do a few final quick crack open 'bleeds' while the other person is holding down the brake or clutch lever. Pushes that last bit of air out.
  8. Those things make bleeding brakes a breeze. Even my 5th gen took me no time at all a few weekends ago. Amazing tool!
  9. I second everything you posted. Seafoam direct into the TB and a smoke show should help clean them up. Always impresses the neighbors when your vehicle becomes a smoke machine /s

  11. Mine has had ~32-38mpg since 1199 miles on the ODO. I manage 44mpg on the 8th gen. Wife gets 48mpg on her 8th gen, softer on the throttle and weighs less. Rider weight and luggage also factor in. Heck, so does tire pressure. Rolling resistance goes up a ton even if psi is down by 5-10.
  12. I told you on Facebook, you are chasing ghosts. Early 5th gens aren't as gas mileage friendly as newer generations. You describe pretty normal mileage for a 98-99. Sync those throttle bodies (mainly just good maintenance item to do for smoother riding), can take the injectors out and have them cleaned and flow tested, and check the FPR just in case. The 6th gen got better gas mileage, and the 8th gen gets even better.

  14. It's ok, if you're like me you'll end up selling it within 2 years. Nice bike, amazing suspension and fun engine, but absolutely no relaxation while riding it. It's like sitting on top of an angry toddler. Never felt so annoyed at being on a bike, one that performed well, too... lol

  18. You can actually use just water, and save yourself the sticky residue. Next time, try it before the cola method and see if it's as good.

  21. ADR #1: A Staintune exhaust is required to be fitted at all times while the bike resides in AU ;) Apologies, haha.
  22. I personally think it has to due with the placement of the filter between the front header pipes, combined with K&N offshoring production and the quality dropping. Higher heat than most bikes + lower quality product = higher failure rate.
  23. I would avoid K&N, even though you've had good luck. Too many failures! Heck, one failed on a 6th gen here locally a week or so ago. I personally use OEM or Bosch 3300s

    My 1998 VFR800 FI w/ 8481mi It's all original aside from high-mount Staintune exhaust, and MOSFET R/R. I am currently not putting any miles on this bike.
