Would You Buy This High Mileage 5Th Gen?

I think previous posters have covered everything mechanically.

But, what about 'dem tires? Have you gotten up close and personal with them? Would be nice to have someone who is up on tires (other than those who sell motorcycle tires) to take a good look at them. Are they holding air good? Was the bike sitting on the floor the last two years? Just sayin...." !

Whether you decide on this one or not - definitely find you a VFR. You will be happy! Keep us posted.

Tires are easy. Check date codes, and wear. They are a consumable not a hard part.

There's possible big time big time bragging rites and smiles when that bike clears 100K. Good fortune, R3~

I've seen a few VFR's hit 100k or 200k miles on internet forums. I've seen a CBR600 F41 hit 250k miles. Sure, wear items needed replacement like clutches, water pumps, brakes, bearings, etc. But their engines never needed teardown or rebuilds.

If you are worried about the high km, you could pay a couple hundred dollars more and get one with 100,000 km less on the odometer.

We do pay more here than in the US, so we either accept it or import one. I got my '99 two years ago with a little over 35,000 km for $4k, but it had an aftermarket exhaust, Racetech springs and valves in the front forks, Corbin seat (now a Sargent), and a Givi rack and topcase. Now it also has a JD 929 rear shock, heli-bars, peg lowering blocks, Kappa k21 & Givi e41 side cases, power commander, speedo healer and soon to have the pair valves removed and dyno tested so I can get two maps made for it (one for fun and one for commuting).

Good luck with your search and if I can help, let me know. I'm in Kitchener, so if you're looking in Plattsville, you aren't that far away.

Bike prices are higher in the GTA in the spring/summer, and lower in the fall.

I'd see if you couldn't get it for around $2300. Go see the bike if it's not too far and ask the seller what he would be comfortable selling the bike for. If he says anything close to $2300 tell him you would love to offer $2300 and be prepared to go up a little from there. Unless you wreck it, the bike will most likely never be worth much less than $2000 until you get past 200,000km at which point it will fall in price to around $1200-$1500.

So, there's an upside in there there is no depreciation hit due to age and mile age left.

Thanks for the replies. What a great and informative forum! Thanks Munster! I've seen that ad. I'm not too far from Kitchener...I'm in Toronto. The left fairing on that bike is all rashed up. If I could get it for cheap that wouldn't be so bad I guess. Would you guys pick a average maintained bike around 50000km or a very well maintained one that's cheaper at 100000+km?

Here's another one that's closer to home: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/city-of-toronto/1998-honda-interceptor/588634448?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Clean, new chain, tires, sprocket and plugs. Still higher mileage though...122k. I definitely don't mind travelling for the right bike though.

Close personal inspection would be needed. I would not rule out the 100km bike only for mileage. :smile2:

I hit 92.5K miles on mine today on the way home and if 2nd gear wasn't constantly slipping I'd trust it to go cross continent, with normal maintenance items looked after.

Still, for that money I could get a nice 25K mile 5g bike around here. Given the history I'd trust the bike, but would be looking to pay less loonies or wait for a lower km bike.

Personally, I'd go with the well maintained bike, regardless of the mileage. Having said that, I'd be willing to pay extra for a low mileage, well maintained bike with some of the extras I'd be installing anyway.

Here's a few more in your area.

This one has a second set of fairings (Chinese likely) included (54,000km)

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/city-of-toronto/1998-honda-vfr-interceptor-new-fairings/585511662?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

This one has a high mount aftermarket exhaust (40,000 km)

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/mississauga-peel-region/2001-honda-interceptor/579396167?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

This one is the original owner with only 23,000 km

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/oakville-halton-region/2000-honda-vfr-interceptor/586259792?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

This one has some extras like hard side bags, Givi windscreen, heated grips, risers, etc... (55,000)

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/kitchener-waterloo/2000-honda-vfr-800/587108083?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

Three of them are getting up there in price, but if you could get them for around $4k, up here that would be alright. The alternative is to import one from the US. I thought about it but didn't end up doing it when I got mine. There are a lot more in the States than there are up here.

Thanks for that Munster. I've seen most of these ads. From a surface level and without having seen the bikes obviously. I still find it hard to swallow that some of these are almost $2000 more than the higher mileage ones. Some are even listed at $5k, which, for a 13-16yr old bike is a lot of money (no disrespect to 5th gen VFRs because obviously I want one).

Does anyone have a source for searching for used VFRs in the states? What does everyone use? Craigslist? Autotrader?

Cheers,

K

Hell, if you are serious about coming into the states, I'll sell you my 5th gen. It's got almost all the goodies and some spares. You are roughly 380 miles from my town, I ride that in a day no problem. Mine has all the luggage, BLS footpeg blocks, Helibars, etc... It's literally turn key.

I was getting ready to take all the good bits off so that I can list it for sale and start PM'ing all the vultures that were circling when I was looking for my 6th gen. But if you are interested, let me know.

Did you find one yet? Here's one that just got posted tonight in Toronto...

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/city-of-toronto/2000-honda-vfr/595672006?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

It's the dark green that didn't go Stateside. $3,000 and 56,000km (35,000 miles). Original owner. Looks like it might be stock.

If you want one from Canada, you're not going to pay much less than what he's asking.

Of course then I see one for $2,500.

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sport-touring/mississauga-peel-region/1999-honda-vfr800/593059867?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

But if all things are equal, I'd likely pay $500 more for the difference in mileage.

Well not to post out-of-turn but my earlier shameless plug worked out. Special's now on what used to be my red 2000 with 38kms on the odometer.

Now to get the fairings back on the '02 and get some fun back !!

Yes! Like b4v4 said, I bought his 2000! Really enjoying it too. Got a high mount two brothers carbon and a rear cowl coming as well! What a fantastic bike. Comfortable, a lot more torque than my 2007 fz6 and a great engine note. I can't wait to get the pipe on to see what that sounds like.

I bought a 1998 VFR in Feb this year for $1800 US with 40k miles on it for reference. Was well maintained and had most of the pre-requisite mods (airbox, rectifier, etc) already done to it. There bargains out there to be had.

Possibly an urban legend but I heard a story about a courier in the UK who did 400,000 miles on a VFR without a rebuild. Thought that was pretty good so he bought another one and did 470,000 miles on that one. If the maintenance is done as reported, 90,000 miles means the engine should still be fine, but agree with the need to check out other bits, bushes, chain, sprockets, suspension. And new tires are so much better than those of even five years ago.

No, it was the same bike, about 850K. A head gasket went at 400K, replaced and did another 400K+. I think that was the '93, I have the article around somewhere.
