since the wire is already cut..

strip off the black and the yellow/white cover.

take a 2 or 3 inch long piece of wire and do a FLASH SOILDER..

aka a very fast melt and cool as to not over heat the electronics inside.

do this by taking the 3 inch wire and wrapping it around the stubby wire. and fanning out the strands..

you heat the strands with a flame and they get red hot real fast, melting the soilder that should be touching the wire before you heat them.

it will melt FAST!! let it melt then blow it cool . trim the strands and tuck the wire.. then add shrink wrap. the soilder the other end of the wire ,.IMG_20131229_004048_zps67046343.jpg

i say 2 or 3 inches but you can use 10 inches if you want

Its pretty bad. Im going to just replace it. I took the right side fairing off and found where it plugs into but the routing for the wire is very tight and behind the frame. Any tips to remove it?

Also i cant seem to find a part number on it anywhere....

Hmmmm I was afraid of that but maybe a easy fix ...

Did the gasket survive ?

No, but i can clean and redo that easily. I cut the sensor wires and pulled it out from opposite ends. Gonna order new one tomorrow. Anyone know a part number?

I would personally just replace the part. No need to solder this connection and have a potential issue down the road where you don't have a soldering iron on hand to fix it.

You can find the part # on any parts website, such as partzilla.com, ronayers.com, and cheapcycleparts.com. I'd price check all three (with shipping) and see who's cheapest. Usually one of 3 wins out by at least 5 bucks, and lead time is similar on each.

^^haha! I'm an Eagles fan and found gll's re awesome...Nick didn't become one of the best by not trying over and over!!

Soldering is a bit of an art and takes perfect practice to be perfect, over and over and there is only one way to get that good at it....try. Also, IF this is your issue, the temporary (while waiting for the other part) fix will allow you to confirm that this IS your issue and have a running bike in the meantime...

LOL...you guys are killing me.

IMO it makes alot more sense to just replace the sensor. God forbid that came apart inside the cover...that would be catastrophic. It's winter here and there is ZERO chance for me to ride the bike anytime soon anyways...

Thanks for all the help so far. I will keep everyone updated.

yep...just found it on partszilla...#23 in the diagram

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-30300-MGE-641.html

Cheap too! Gonna call dealer tomorrow and see if it's in stock and if they will match the price...

My plan is to install it without being plugged in, that way there is no tension on it this time. After I put the cover back on, I will then route the harness to the plug in.

Hopefully some of this is helping OAK, I know this stuff can be infuriating. It's one of my biggest worries about the 1200... all the electrical crap.

my biggest worry too...i just bought a nice 2000 Valkyrie because, well, one i've always loved the bike, and two, i just wanted a bike that i could wrench on and fiddle with without getting any more grey hair !!! little mistakes on the VFR can cost $$$$$$$

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok gang....installed the new part today but still getting the check engine blink and no start...

I'm positive I did this right...do I need to reset the computer in order for it to clear?

If so, is that just a matter of disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting?
