jeremyr62
Useful info. Gives me something to aim for. Possibly that dyno was a tad optimistic though.

jeremyr62
Testament to the build and design. You would be pushed to find a modern 500 pumping out out anything like much power. Just a pity it's a bit fragile in the valve train area. 31 years is a long time...

So I swung round to have a look. Hmmm, all panels still properly wrapped but the shipping paperwork said "Hongkong".... :-) The seller (the father since his son was in hospital follwing his wreck) looked puzzled... "Hongkong is Japan no?" I am pretty sure he feigned ignorance, but we agreed a price we were both happy with.... Plenty horror stories on the web on Chinese bodywork, but one wintry/bored day will test fit it. In the attic space now, hope I never really need them :-) "tasteless" tankpad included Straight into the vertical archive!!! Unless Timmy wants it..... Or mount the Chinese plastics and save the originals...
Member Contributer Dutchy Posted August 13, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted August 13, 2017 The OEM bodywork looks nicer so that will stay on; especially the top/nose fairing. My sides do have a few blemishes, but the gray wing color matches perfectly with the tank. But, having saying that, I've been know to change my mind (aka get in touch with my female side ) The kit came along at a very good price, a price I could not resist

Possibly that dyno was a tad optimistic though. The 4th gen (open exhaust, K&N filter, dynojet kit all done by the owner, not a tuner) produced 97 ponies so I don't think that dynoyet bench is overly optiimistic. But benches do vary, as does altitude (the town is about 8 metres over sea level) etc as we all know
jeremyr62
As you spotted there is so little dyno info for the VF500F. A google search brings up bugger all. The chart I posted was from the original reviews way back.I suppose these then became the "truth". Your run is as valid as anyone elses. Have you managed to measure the top end on it? The best I have ever seen on mine was 183km/h on a GPS. Mine definitely doesn't deliver 59hp though. I might try and get mine tested.. Member Contributer Dutchy Posted August 14, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted August 14, 2017 I will need to find an excuse (as if I need one) to break the Dutch speed laws now...... "I am sorry officer, but this Jeremy character made me do it.... " Or nip across the border into Autobahn country
jeremyr62
Here's another dyno run from way way back. This is for an 1984 version with the 32mm carbs and different heads. 55hp, which is close to what Cycle got when they tested the 84 version (they got 53.2hp). Member Contributer Dutchy Posted August 16, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted August 16, 2017 Level Autobahn Neigh on full tank of petrol Full leathers, me 86kg in the buff :-)
jeremyr62
Not bad at all. I feel a challenge coming on.. The Mechanics reviewers got 123mph (198km/h) from the one they tested with 55hp so there or there about. That was at a test track too. Member Contributer Dutchy Posted August 16, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted August 16, 2017 Well, despite what they claim, the Autobahn is no test track :-) 9/10 attempts I had to abandon as I was approaching traffic... Earlier, doing 130kmh I nearly got wiped out (by a dutch cager; the worst drivers in the world behind the Americans....) not checking his mirrors and move into my lane.... :-(
Member Contributer JZH Posted August 16, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted August 16, 2017 The Autobahn really depends on which one you're on. The popular ones are not only very crowded, but absolutely chock-full of restricted speed zones that go on for miles. And don't get me started on the "Lärmschutz" speed limits! Besides which, of course, when I'm in Germany on a bike it's usually loaded up like a camel, so testing its top speed is a bit of a pointless exercise! Member Contributer Dutchy Posted August 17, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted August 17, 2017 Wow.... interesting data from my Garmin device 3 clicks to get from 160 to 190 and one minute. The Garmin tracks time/averages per section, making is impossible to determine "real" acelleration. Took her a minute But she is no torque monsta! One day will check out the SP2

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted August 20, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted August 20, 2017 The SP's PO's mechanic did put on a new chain set on last year, but my guess is he was not into cleaning much. Clatty bstard.. Spotted this wasp, sniffing for his forebears that met the cowling at speed?? Finally got round to using a decal I bought in 2012... How does time fly eh? Member Contributer Mohawk Posted August 23, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted August 23, 2017 That Dyno chart is almost identical to mine from years ago, it made 59hp at the rear wheel, stock apart from K&N filter, plus a Predator stainless 4-1 exhaust. It made better mid range with the snorkel in the airbox.
Member Contributer Mohawk Posted August 23, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted August 23, 2017 I used to get 130mph indicated out of my 1986 one, no GPS back then :(
