How I Entertain Myself At 1 Am

15$ radioshack headphones, remove the speakers from the headband and then take the speaker out of it's case. Use a little wall tack (the goo you use to hang posters and what not) to cover the wires, put foam cover back over front of speaker, position in helmet and run wire in between padding. Go to walmart or craft store and buy some Velcro and place some on liner and some on back of the speaker and boom! You now have a rocking stereo, with good bass too I might add, for less than 20$ & took me all of 15 min to make it. I did this with my Shoei RF-800.

We thought you entertained yourself at 1am by watching porn like the rest of us LOL!

I tried using flat speakers in my helmet but they seemed useless at speeds above 40 mph especially with my modular helmet so I went with in-ear buds by Shure. They were over $100 but the sound quality is amazing and they block out all the wind and background noises.

Neat job, but as stated above...

The problem with speakers on a VFR is that there is too much air noise at speed.

Speakers do nothing to reduce the noise and you end up raising the volume to the max in order to hear anything.

Earbuds, OTOH, block outside noise and allow you to listen to music at low volume even at 80+ MPH, which also helps save hearing.

Now, go buy yourself some earbuds and go back to doing what everyone else is doing at 1AM.

I have THESE and love'em, but there are many other choices out there.

Rice, I've tried those Westones and they were a fail for me. I like to wear my helmet with a tight fit, and none of my helmets would allow me to wear those earbuds. Not only do they press into my ear canal causing pain, but the over-the-ear cord I could only tolerate for a while. Also they would as most earphones do, end up pulling out of my ear while donning my helmet or with any movement.

These S-plug earphones are the only ones I have found that stay in while putting on my helmet, and I have minimal discomfort with the wire as it exits the ear canal downward.

However, I still cannot wear any earbuds all day for comfort and wind noise. I give up volume and clarity for comfort and wind noise protection by wearing foam ear plugs and using helmet speakers...

I hear ya, DR :goofy:

Ears are as personal as our behinds. Some have stock, some Corbin and some Sargent...

I also ware my helmets tight and have struggled with the pullout at times, but have learned techniques to deal with that.

There is some minor discomfort with the westones after the whole day of riding, but it is not enough to discourage me from wearingn them.

Of course the best solution is a set of custom plugs, but I have not been able to justify the price of admission due to the type of riding I do.

Rice you are so right...I am about ready to spring for some custom molded plugs. I found some at earplugstore.com that have the ability to customize the sound filter installed in the earplug for specific activities. For motorcycling they would put in a filter that would block more high frequency sound (wind noise) while hopefully letting through more sounds like music and speaking. $175 bucks to find out I guess. Not much to pay to protect hearing really...and I do enjoy my music while riding!

I have been riding with earbuds, but this Shoei helmet is tighter and I have problems pulling out. (Insert joke here) anyways, that and when I ride with someone I can't hear a lick of what they're saying at stops without taking my helmet off and removing the earbuds. The rf-800 is pretty darn quiet at speed so I thought I'd try these helmet speakers out and see, they are much more comfortable and make taking my head can off and putting it on much easier.

Just remember to use foam earplugs with the speakers mounted in your helmet...those are probably better than the speakers that Cardo ships with their G4 and G9 sets...good job.

Apology to the OP for hijacking your thread. Good job on the engineering...there is another active thread about this same mod. I have been trying some aftermarket speakers by Torx attached to my Sena SMH-10 unit. I don't know if it is a coincidence or not, but my battery life lately is about half of what it used to be. Now I only get about 3-4 hours on a charge. Of course I have the volume all the way up since I wear earplugs. I would be curious if you notice a hit to yours as well...

I highly recommend:

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE215-K-Sound-Monitor-Black/dp/B004PNZFZ8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

As good at blocking noise as my hearos earplugs.

You'll want these too:

http://www.amazon.com/Shure-CBL-M-K-EFS-Three-Button-Control/dp/B0043241X8/ref=pd_sim_MI_3

The price for the phone cable is outrageous but I'm at 2 years and everything still works great.

I have to disagree with what's been said about in helmet speakers. IMO, if you start with a quiet helmet first, it's not an issue. I have a Schuberth C3 (quiet even unaided) and their SRC communications setup and it works like a charm, even at freeway speeds and with ear plugs. Do I have full range fidelity? No, but I do have a good mix of external sounds as well as my music. The down side, both helmet and comm system are more pricey than the average helmet speaker combo, but I have no complaints. YMMV

No air noise problem with mine, I guess it depends on the helmet ...

What do you wear? With my RKT-101 carbon and Signet-Q, wind noise is a BIG deal.
