Member Contributer dutchinterceptor Posted September 16, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted September 16, 2010 I tried the one that fits in the steering stem and has the rubber expansion plugs but I never could keep it tight so I bought this one that mounts in front of the tank. You just need to get longer tank bolts. The medium length arm was just a little short for me so I switched to the longer arm on my 6th gen.. Same set up here. Great thing about it is that it doesn't move with your steering. I found that the center-center dimension was a tad smaller than the tank bolts, so don't be surprised if you have to file a little get the screws to line up. I actually went to the shortest arm, in order to reduce the leverage (and subsequent motion range) of the GPS unit during bumps. I live in Quebec, bumps is all I have! Member Contributer Conedodger Posted September 17, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted September 17, 2010 I tried the tank mount, but switched to the stem mount. I can't get the right position for the GPS when I use my tank bag and the tank mount. I did have to modify the stem mount to make it fit tighter. I threw away the rubber plug that came in the kit and replaced it with a different one from the plumbing department at Lowes.
Member Contributer VFRbeliever Posted September 17, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted September 17, 2010 I bought the center stem mount, and like everyone else, can't get it completely tight. But i live with it that way. It's never become so loose that the GPS has fallen off or anything. I just make sure to hand tighten it again after a few hours of riding. If I every buy another one, it will definitely be the tank bolt mount.

Instead of using the rubber stopper that came with the kit, I used a rubber cork that comes with some bottled wines. The diameter is almost perfect for the stem. I cut the rubber cork to size, drilled a hole through the middle (be careful to keep a straight line as you drill through it) and followed the directions that came with the mount. Worked pretty well and it's tight. FWIW

Not saying you should or shouldn't, I just haven't seen those stickers before and thought maybe it was a Canadian bike or something. I bought my 04 second hand so didn't know it came with stickers on the tank. Love the color of your bike btw...

Perhaps my GPS was light enough not to be a problem? In any case, I believe there is a mount that runs a bolt through the stem to mount it more solidly than a plug. If not sold that way, it's certainly an easy mod! I like the tank bolt mount, too.
Guest
I would like to mount my Escort 8500 radar detector to my 2007 Interceptor. Can anyone tell me what parts that I need? I've seen the link to the ball that could be mounted to the tank bolts (with longer bolts) and that looks pretty good. But I don't know what type of arms or length to use or what type of plate to mount on top of the arm. I'm experiencing option paralysis for all that I see on the RAM mounts website. Help a new guy? Thank. Title says it all. Thanks in advance!
Member Contributer MuddDawg Posted December 13, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted December 13, 2010 I have been using this set up for a few years and works great. I have a screen mount for my Radar which is great in the summer when I know its not going to rain. http://www.legalspeeding.com/AWM.htm Wanting to do a different mount, but I like being able to see it without looking down while riding. On day I will figure out a better way.

Guest
I've just got my VFR. As I will be putting in a powerlet outlet in the steering head, this looks like the best option for me. What tank bolts do I need? Can the be obtined from a Honda dealer or else where? (particularly for us retail challenged Canadians). I tried the one that fits in the steering stem and has the rubber expansion plugs but I never could keep it tight so I bought this one that mounts in front of the tank. Member Contributer Gerrys02800 Posted April 12, 2011 Member Contributer Share Posted April 12, 2011 Man, I just replaced mine a while ago when I installed the mount on my bike, but I am not near the bike to check. I know the bolt is a M6 and stock length is 30. I went to Can Tire and bought a M6x35 and M6x40 just in case. edit: I went and checked and its the M6X40
Guest
Thanks, I grabbed 2 M6x40 from Home Depot...not sure I like the "look" of the, but they will do until I find some "pretty" bolts ;-). I got the desired RAM mount (RAM 231) from Radio World (North of Toronto), not the cheapest place, but I could physically go there real quick and satisfy my "farkle shopping urge".
