Guest tpierce(MP)
while i put on a helmet? I had an older, crappy helmet, and i could do it just fine, probably due to the lack of padding. I just bought a new KBC helmet and whenever i pull it over my head, the earbuds fall out, and i can't really stick my hand up there once the helmet is on to move the earbuds. So how do you all do it? cassandtim
I ride with a lightweight cap on under my helmet. It does a good job of keeping my ear buds in when I put on the helmet, reduces the wind noise, and keeps my helmet from getting too stinky from sweat. Guest
You pick up a pair of these. Apparently they have gone down $3 in the last two weeks. <_< You can thank me later. Oh yeah, pull the chin straps apart when you put the helmet on, makes a huge difference.
Guest trekuk
Get earbuds that actually go into your ear canal and don't stick out much?
Member Contributer jeremy556 Posted May 16, 2007 Member Contributer Share Posted May 16, 2007 Try different earbuds. Sony ones work well for me. I have to put them in, then put on helmet, then adjust under cheek pad before connecting the chin strap. Make sure the rubber part is the right size for your ears and the buds don't stick out much past your ears. Also, try to spread the cheek pads a bit with your thumbs when putting the helmet on. That stuff gets dirty pretty fast. I suppose I could clean my ears, but what if it's not Saturday? If you want to go high end, you can get soft plugs that are molded to your own personal ears and wired to speakers. A local motorcycle shop does the whole kit for about $200. I'm guessing an audiologist might be cheaper. I'm actually trying out a pair in my avatar picture here. So far, my Radio Shack plugs work great. Guest
I took a slightly different approach. I too had problem keeping earbuds in my ears when putting on my helmet. I removed the cheek pads from my Arai helmet and installed a pair of Koss headphones in behind the fabric right where my ears sit. I then reinstalled the cheek pads and routed the cord so that just the plug barely hangs out of the side of my helmet just past the front of the cheek pad. I run a headphone extension through my jacket to a volume control and to a Boostaroo headphone amp in my tank bag. I can listen to my iPod or my RAM mounted XM radio. The sound quality is decent and I can still hear what's going on around me on the road.

There is a cap/hat thing called a Slik or a Silk or something like that. They are about $12.00 or so at motorcycle shops. Put the ear buds in, put this on and then put your helmet on. Can you hear the speakers over the wind noise? I assume you use standard foam earplugs to prevent hearing damage and headaches..? An extra bonus with Etymotic and similar noise-isolating plugs is that they can be used anywhere, whether it be on an airplane, in a coffee shop or in bed. I suppose I could clean my ears, but what if it's not Saturday? How about taking regular foam ear plugs, using a hot needle or similar to bore a hole through and using that as a replacement? Works good for me with my Koss earbuds and keeps the unnecessary ear cleaning down to once or twice a month. :goofy:
Lee 2002
:goofy: On the etymotics. That is really the only way to go. The one thing I have not seen mentioned here is to grab your helmet by the chinstraps and pull outward. Spread the helmet wider so it does not scrape your earbuds out as you put it on. ... Or buy some etymotics.

Guest
I use the cheap JVC's cause I could'nt bring myself to shelling out a hundred clams on ear plugs. The first thing I did was to throw away the hard spongy ear bud and use the soft foam ear plugs from Walgreens, CVS, etc. I then heat up a small needle and let it melt out the middle to the right size and then use a razor blade to trim 1/4 off of one end off. Takes a couple tries to get it right when you first try, but now I can put new foam on them in about 2 minutes every couple of weeks as they get grimmey. The JVC's have really good sound, but I am not as professional of music listener as some. The JVC's are cheap, and very small and do not hang out of the ear. Oh and they blco out almost all wind noise. The mod is well known, but I can post pics if needed.

When I first started riding with ear buds, I would get so frikken frustrated trying to get the damn things in place!! I would put on the helmet, take it off, put on the helmet, take it off... like 4-5 times before it would be where I wanted it. And when I took off the helmet, it would rip the buds right out of my ear! After I got a Slik, it was much easier to slide the helmet on and off over my ears. And For X-Mas my dad got me a pair of the custom molded ear plugs like he had, and I love them. They cut so much wind noise, and let you listen to tunes without the volume all the way up, which I know can mess with your hearing. Sliks
Guest
I have used these for the past year and like them. http://helmetaudio.com/khxc/index.php?app=...49yaq2yh680v80m They are easily heard without turning the Ipod up to max volume. They mounted easily in my Schuberth C2 and the connector hangs just outside of the helmet, easy to access.

superfunkomatic
i use helmet speakers, and wear earplugs works great! they sound really good and are only about 3/8" thick, perfect for the sides of the helmet - plus the earplugs get rid of windnoise but you can still hear sounds around you. the company that makes the speakers is called - torx, and i think they were about $25USD.
