  1. It's probably one of those things they've seen only a handful of, and have calculated that it's cheaper to do the recall than pay a settlement or suffer a judgement in a wrongful death suit. The odds of any one unit failing are likely quite low.
  2. It looks as though unless something changes, due to schedules and other considerations a full-on meet in Oregon will be in 2017. Depending on didit's schedule and route, myself and some others could possibly play hooky from work and catch up for a day ride or maybe an overnight to Eastern Oregon. Others on trips this way also might be able to connect up for some small group rides too. We'll have to see how things shake out.
  3. Peeps who trailer will have a temp0rary tatoo across their forehead that reads "I am a trailering wimp." I resemble that . . .! It must rub off - I can't see it any longer!
  4. I used a DID ZVMX 530 - very stout chain. Overkill for the VFR, but it should give good service life. Whatever the brand, I would go with plated - though it costs more, it will look better and resist corrosion better than bare steel.

  7. I can see how going from one to the other would be mentally taxing. Nice job!

  9. Unless the hose to the adjuster is cut / removed, R/R'ing the rear shock on a 6th gen ABS is a royal PITA. Turns what should be a short job in to an all day project. I had Jamie rebuild my ABS shock, but I could see why some wouldn't. Well worth it though!
  10. Sometimes old flames can be re-kindled . . . maybe keep an eye out for another one. I really like the subtle 'VFRD' logo in place of the factory decals - something probably only a member here would pick up on.
  11. Bumping this thread. I removed the poll - the popularity of an Oregon-centric meet is running far behind the Canadian meet that Superfunkomatic is planning. After the details of that are announced we'll see if something can be organized further south so as not to overlap too much and dilute both efforts. I'll leave the thread intact so the links to what's available to do in the Portland area remain available.
  12. A great day at the summit! It was hazy when I was there, so not nearly as good a view. By the way, what's the zip code up there? :)
  13. That would be a great candidate for the next calendar. Very cool.
  14. At the Montrose meet in August there was a good deal of interest in having another PacNW meet based in Oregon. The 2014 Oregon Trail meet changed venues each night, taking us on a good tour of the Eastern part of the state, while the one previous to that was in 2010 at Troutdale, based at McMenamins lodge / brewpub. This would be scheduled far enough apart from a PacNW Kootenay Hootenanny meet so that anyone wanting to do both would have time to get home and re-group. In addition to Troutdale, another choice based in Baker City is included. There are some fantastic roads in the B.C. area. Holding a meet there would be more central to more riders and would make getting there more equal for many. Though not listed as a choice, I'll also put in some rides in the Bend area. Some mentioned the Oregon Coast - I'll leave that to members to make suggestions, if any. If there is stronger interest those rather than either Troutdale or Baker City that could be considered. Here's some info: Baker City Population is about 10,000, so food / lodging / parts & service choices are limited https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_City,_Oregon Hotels: The top 3 in B.C. are either right near I-84 and far from town or lack parking. The #4 rated is the Bridge Street Inn where the 2014 meet stayed. Clean, tidy and about $50 per night. http://www.bridgestreetinn.net/ Nearby pubs / restaurants - all withing walking distance of motel. http://www.barleybrownsbeer.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BakerCityBrewingCompany https://www.facebook.com/Corner-Brick-Bar-Grill-380254838671534/ Here's the good part - the riding - lots of possibilities: https://goo.gl/maps/NgLJzvNg12o Sumpter was a mining area and has an abandoned dredge that seems fairly popular https://goo.gl/maps/pr3Tkv7KBnL2 https://goo.gl/maps/HBsHkG1aywJ2 http://https://goo.gl/maps/32KAU1MFZ8J2 For more ideas, here's the link to the Hell's Canyon Rally held there July 7-11: http://www.hellscanyonrally.com/ There is one Honda dealer in Baker City, Cliffs Saws and Cycles. No webpage I could find. My guess is they deal mostly with ATV's and dirtbikes - they may not have much familiarity with a VFR rear wheel or service procedures any more than another brand dealer. There is a Yamaha dealer just a few blocks from the motel. http://www.oregontrailsports.com/index.htm Troutdale - McMenamins Edgefield (Portland metro area) Edgefield was the "Poor Farm" in the 1920's and '30s for the Portland area and converted to a hotel in the '80's. It has its own brewing and wine making facilities on site, full restaurant, billiard hall (10 tables I think), an indoor movie theater, spa, soaking pools, disc golf, and outdoor movies for free in the summer. A room with a Queen bed looks to be $90 per night. http://www.mcmenamins.com/54-edgefield-home The location is easy to access on I-84 from the East, or I-5 either north or south. https://goo.gl/maps/Q954ixGw68o In addition to the Edgefield attractions, for anyone wanting to come early / stay longer there are motorcycle racing and track days at Portland International Raceway, about 1/2 hour away. PSSR and Moto Corsa Track Days are on Mondays (no dates yet), and OMMRA racing is over weekends. On Sunday race events, OMMRA hosts what they call a "Taste of Racing" (TOR) where they open the track over the lunch hour for 20 minutes to anyone that wants to pay $20. On a Viffer 130 to 140 mph speeds are possible on the front straight. Dates could possibly coincide with one if there's sufficient interest. http://motocorsa.com/events/track-days/ http://www.pssrtrack.com/schedule.html http://omrra.com/track-days/ The Honda dealers are all on the west side of PDX, however there are several shops closer to Edgefield that could assist with service / tires, including a Cycle Gear about 20 minutes away. Possible rides: https://goo.gl/maps/XZZuC7LG9VQ2 https://goo.gl/maps/enyBu1ihBPu https://goo.gl/maps/uTx26p3FxTu https://goo.gl/maps/pNcHY7KAQRo For family members that might attend there is also: Outlet mall at Troutdale is about 2 miles. Post up what you think.
  15. They're not interchangeable - the spacing on 5th gens is wider.
  16. Hackers - ruining it for everyone . . . . Thanks for the clarification.
  17. Maybe they're thinking of valve adjustments. The CCTs don't know where the crank or cams are at in their rotation - they're just pressing against the chain.
  18. Has anyone got an update on embedding a map in a post? Since 2013, Google Maps has changed. and it looks as though the process on the forum has changed slightly, too. I pulled up a Google map, clicked on "Share or Embed", selected "Embed" and copied the url code to my clipboard. Then on this post, I selected the 3rd icon from the upper left, the green colored one that when you click it brings up a dialog box that says "Special BBC Code". In the dropdown I selected "Google Map Embed" and when the next box popped up I copied the code in to the box that says "Insert Custom Google Map code here" and clicked "OK". Once that's complete, I see the map showing perfectly prior to posting. Once posted though, it appears to take a screen shot in place of the Google map as you see below. What . . . am I doing wrong? [map][/map]
  19. If you go with a 750 engine from a 1997 or earlier model, you can forego the electronics - might be a simpler install in your project. Highly similar architecture and output but carb'd rather that FI.

    A good candidate for the 2016 calendar . . .
  21. I know...there appear to be a few people that are looking for A&A kits now that can afford them that couldn't when Dan was producing them. The timing of the release of the 6th gen kit was unfortunate - just after the bottom of the Great Recession - homeowners underwater, stock market cratering and millions losing their jobs. In normal times there might have been quite a few more of them. It would be interesting to know how many 5th gen kits are out there. What does he do for insurance on it? (or track only?)

Gutted exhaust? I seem to recall seeing this photo over on ADVRider. Great pic to enlarge to poster size and put on the wall over where the bike's parked!
