spud786
You are talking seal and not dust cover that your replaced? Seals are very delicate and easily damaged and some brands aren't any good, how did you get the original seal out? you should have seen the bushing condition at that time. V4 Rosso
Their no scorched or scratch marks. The seal seam to go on with out damage, It's a big job replacing the seal, can a new seal be replaced with out pulling the forks apart. I am sure there are people out there that can replace a fork seal without disassembling the forks, but I prefer to take it all apart and give it all a thorough cleaning and inspection. At 94k the bushings might need replacing too. Not that it makes much difference here, but what model VFR are we talking about? In your forum profile you can add your model VFR to the "In my garage" section. 9 => dust cap 16 => oil seal 18 => slider bushing

Gurunjiii
Hi spud, After dismantling the fork on the bench, the old seal even looked good. Hi Rosso, do you think part number 18 is the problem ?
Member Contributer gll429 Posted December 21, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 21, 2014 inspect the upper tube.. THE WHOLE THING!!! as you are sliding the seal on it. either up or down .. DID YOU USE A LUBED CONDOM??? yes . you read that right!!! 1 ,clean tube with brake or carb cleaner.. inspect.. make sure no obvious scratches and dings are found. 2, place protection on the tube , leaving about 2 inches at the tip. 3 slide seal over condom... make sure the seal is facing the proper direction! yes it tight, you should know how to this if your over 15. years old. 4 cut the tip withe scissors. about a 1/2inch.. 5 slide condom down the shaft to the area the seal operates in. 6 cut bottom of condom off.. aka the rolled ring .. 7 pull condom up through the seal yes UP .. it most likely rip.. but pull all bits up.. once the condom is out.. slide the seal a few inches up and down to make sure all bits are gone. 8 rebuild your fork. whole point of this is simple. ..the fork is covered in chrome that can have razor sharp tiny edges that you cant see, but will screw up the seal. this protects it until its in the working area. VFR4Lee
you should know how to this if your over 15. years old. Sounds like a good suggestion though. :happy2:
V4 Rosso
Hi Rosso, do you think part number 18 is the problem ?No, but Spud786 has a good point first establishing you did replace the oil seal and not the dust cap. The drawnig is just to show what is what. So it was part #16 you replaced?
Gurunjiii
Yes to seal. Had the whole forks apart. I'll try again using the condoms, I'll have to get some more as mine won't fit over the tube way to tight. It's a 1994 VFR750

It's a 1994 VFR750 I guess 41mm condoms are Tree size LOL you use a strip of electrical tape and vasoline to slide over rough area like the top of the tube. I guess sometimes the chrome where the triple clamps mount can get rusty. I don't own condoms , so I have to do it natural. >G
