Just Picked Up This 83 Vf750F Project Bike

I just bought this yesterday on an impulse. It had been sitting in a humid barn for seven years. It has 13k miles on it and the rear cams and top end looks almost new.

Right now I am trying to get it running. I have cleaned the carbs and spark plugs. I seem to be getting an intermittent spark and tach bounce. I am trying to start it from a stock size battery from a lawn mower. This coming Wednesday I am going to try to start it from a car battery and buy new plugs. Pics coming shortly the bike is very rough.

I am on a phone and can't find the edit button. I am also gravity feeding the carbs from a gas can bypassing the pump.

Welcome and have fun. Check and clean your electrical connections,

then try starting. Looks as good (or bad) as my 84 did when I got it.

Cost me a few bucks to get it to where it is now, but I'm having a laugh

riding it. Keep us informed and lots of pictures.

Welcome aboard and congrats on your purchase.

I have picked up a 92 on impulse a week ago myself.

Must be something in the water in NJ...

Thanks

I've unplugged then plugged back in every connection I could find and also cleaned the ground with a red scotch brite pad.

Hi Bordin34,

Nice to see 'an oldie but a goodie' to be saved. But...

...you say it was a humid barn, and it looks like the frame has a lot of rust around the swingarm pivots. If the area reaches feezing in the winter, then water in the frame can bulge crack the frame if it doesn't drain.

Great that the top end is in good shape, just a word of caution about the frame.

Is that Gran Torino in the background?

I have a 500 frame in the back where the water/ice bulged the frame wide open. Strange way to ruin a frame, but it does happen. Hit me up for parts, as I have 2 of these things.

My 73 440 Charger is in the background. The frame looks solid with just a lot of surface rust. I'm going to wire wheel evaporust then repaint the frame.

I changed the oil, replaced the plugs, cleaned the carbs, and found out I didnt plug the pulse generator connector back in. It fired right up with my gatorade fuel tank.

It sounds like I definitely need to adjust the valve lash.

That clicking noise sounds like the fuel pump. I had that very sound when I forgot to turn the fuel valve on day. Dah! me. Good luck on the bike I have had a lot of fun (as well as some frustration) with my resurrected 83. Pretty much got the mechanical stuff done. now on to the cosmetics
