Member Contributer tbzep Posted June 9, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted June 9, 2012 Before my silver 2008, I had a red 2004. Yes, red was faster...much faster. BTW, my first V-4 was a 1986 VF-500F Interceptor.
Guest
CBR250R, don't miss it. Think it was one of the early ones after they opened the plant in India. Great gas mileage tho, averaged 72mpg.
TimC
2001 Kawasaki ZR-7S. Good all-arounder, it was my first 'adult' motorcycle, as I had a small dirtbike when I was a kid. Bought it in May and loved riding, but after a couple months I wanted something a bit more modern, sportier, faster and with FI. By August I had upgraded to my VFR. Only you Kevin. I had a 99 vfr. It was my first bike ever. I lucked into it. Some guy sold it to buy a Kitana (please tell me why) When I got the Italian Red 6th gen. which I had wanted all along, I sold my 5th to Matt Hall to stop him from salivating over it. Now both of us are happy, happy, happy

Terc
6th gen RWB was my first bike just under 2 years ago. have since added the 08 CBR1000RR track / race bike as well as the 09 Ducati 1198. I love both of these and they get a lot more use than the VFR, but I never intend to sell my first bike. How was learning on a VFR800? I think I'd really like one but I want to get some miles under neath me on a SV650s before jumping in a VFR. It was great. It is not as easy to wheelie or break the rear loose as it is with my other bikes. The only downside is that it is much heavier. I actually liked the weight while learning as it taught me a lot about low speed handling. now when I get on my other bikes they feel weightless. The VFR is also much easier on initial turn-in than my other bikes. In camparing it to a SV650, I would guess that the power to weight ratio is comparable. (not sure about the exact specs - someone can correct me) you would be moving up to more power, but it is EASILY controllable. On the other side of the equation you would aldo be moving up greatly in bike weight. Ergonomically speaking the VFR feels more upright as well. I came directly from an '07 SV650S and I'd say the power feels very comparable until about 9K. 9K RPMs on the VFR feels exactly like the top end of the SV, and so the best way I can explain the difference in power is just imagine your SV can continue through a whole extra gear's worth of winding before you actually need to shift. Oh, and it continues to gain power through most of those extra RPMS. :) I've since jumped back on an '04 SV650 and it felt so much smaller under me (probably partially due to the lack of a fairing) but I found myself wringing it all the way out and wondering where the rest of the engine was. The SVs are such great bikes, but once you make the move to the VFR, anything over 20MPH will leave you smiling. Yeah, it's heavier, but it just doesn't show after 20 or so. I do miss how happily the SV pulls from a stop, the extra torque in that magical v-twin is just fantastic in stop and go traffic.

Max1
The SV650S ain't a bad choice of bike to hone your skills, wish you well. I've had 20 bikes all up, my last was a 98 CBR600 F3. A great bike, but available cash & desire meant bye bye. Wish I was able to keep it, but not enough room in my garage or bank account. I received my Class M1 licence at 16 while my dad only had his permit (for several years), so during the week M-F, I rode the bikes to school and my dad rode them on the weekends. Oddly, the bikes that were "mine" he didn't ride!
