Hi all. Great site. I owned a '07 Honda Shadow and an '09 Yamaha FZ6. Turned out I needed a hip replacement and was unable to lift my leg over the seat. Sold both bikes, had replacement surgery, and I am now looking to buy my first (and probably not my last) VFR800. Looking at the '07 and '08. Like the dark red and the silver colors. I'm 6'2" with a short inseam, 31", so I figure the VFR should suit me well.

You've got great advice here and I look forward to being an active member of the community.

Thanks in advance, GStephen70.

A 2001 Kawasaki ZR-7S, essentially a VFR just with retro tech everything. Good bike, bullet proof, comfortable and easy to work on. But like I said OLD tech, 2 valve head, air cooled, 5 speed and an engine designed in the 70's and developed ever since. Before that a series of dirt / enduro bikes. Rupp mini bike, Z-50, SL-70, SL-175, Yamaha DT-175, Husqvarna 360WR. Now a 2002 VFR

  • 2 weeks later...

1) 1984 Suzuki GS450L - learned to ride on this one. 37 hp of air cooled fury.Very good bike to learn on. Got abused by myself and several friends. Cost me 900 bones.

2) 2002 1200 Sportster - The bike that taught me to appreciate Harley's for what they are. Antiquated, obese, and ill handling machines. However, the torque and noise are still music to my ears. Also learned from this one not to try and make a bike into something it's not. It's MUCH cheaper to buy the bike for the purpose. Bought it for 6000, sold it for 3750. Couldn't get it out of my garage fast enough.

3) 2000 CBR 929RR - Good God. What a powerhouse speed machine and feathery light. Does not tolerate screw ups very well. Very capable if you know what you're doing. NOT comfortable for long trips. Also taught me that fuel injection is king; I'm done with carbs for good. Bought it for 2900 bucks.

4) 2008 VFR800 - So far, good on power if you keep her up above 4500. 8000+ brings on a very quick machine. Very comfortable, handles very nicely. Almost as good as the 929 for a bike that weighs around 130 more pounds. Paid 5000 for this one.

'06 CBR 1000RR - Purchased new in July '06

'02 VFR 800 - We, gf and myself, bought it about a 3 weeks ago to do some traveling and two up riding.

I'm still watching this thread. Thanks for all the replies. Again, I have a 2006 SV650s as my very first motorcyle since June. I am new to riding and haven't put on many miles this summer. I think the SV650s is decent around town, but I think I want more power and something better and longer rides, even though I haven't ridden very far yet.

2007 Kawasaki Ninja 650R

Jixsta, since the 650R is similar to the SV650s, how was your transition to the VFR800?

Started riding just over a year ago. Put 5500 miles on an 02 SV650 naked. Loved the bike, but just not comfortable enough for serious miles or easy speed.

I've obviously got limited experience, but I can't get over how good the VFR is. 80 mph was a chore on the SV, mostly due to no fairing. VFR is just a dream.

I started on a 1983 Honda Shadow back in 1999. Since then, I have owned, in order, 1997 Suzuki Bandit 600, 2001 Yamaha Vstar 1100, 1986 Kawasaki Concours, 2000 Suzuki Bandit 1200 and a 1983 Honda Goldwing. Still have the Goldwing.

60's Honda S90

60's Yamaha 2 stroke street twin

Early 70's Honda CB350- I bought it when I was in the Army in Alaska. Took it down every trail I could find and crashed it numerous times. I had a mobile of broken levers and switches. It never failed me.

73 Honda CL450- I ran it out of oil and seized it on the worst road trip of my life.

77 Kawasaki 750 twin- My first "big" bike. Bulletproof and comfortable. I traded it I when I saw the the next bike.

79 Honda CB750LTD- This thing was gorgeous when it was new.

84 Honda Sabre700- Probably the smoothest bike I ever had. Never let me down.

86 BMW K100RS- Never loved it like I should have.

03 Kawasaki KLR650 (keeper)- The perfect bike for around town. Easiest bike to ride ever. Love it.

03 VFR- Quite the contrast after riding the KLR for a few years. I'm still adjusting.

Although I don't own a 6th generation, here-goes:

'68? Honda Mini-trail 50: Purchased by my Dad ~1970 when I was 11 and in the 6th grade. Must have been bullet-proof. Wish I still had it..

'69? Honda CL-90: Purchased used by my Dad...we shared. Pretty machine w/candy apple red w/grey accents. Nearly identical to the one ridden by the kid at the beginning of the movie "Independence Day". Another "wish I still had" motorcycle.

'72 Honda CL-175: Purchased new by my Dad...we shared. I beat the heck out of this one on dirt and gravel roads for ten years from age 13 through college, but like the Energizer bunny that engine just kept going and going long after the suspension components had gone to mush.

'68? Kawasaki 350: Purchased used by my Dad/.two-stroke twin w/oil injection. Not loved and ridden little (Dad purchased from a friend who needed $$) but it was a hoot when the plugs were clean and the engine came into the powerband in a lower gear where the front-end would suddenly reach for the sky!

'82 Yamaha XZ-550RJ (Vision 550 cc v-twin): My first street-legal motorcycle-purchased new as leftover for $1.6k 10/84. I still have it, but it's been disassembled for 20+ years after spinning a rod bearing @ ~25k miles. IMO the Vision truly was ahead of it's time w/shaft drive, water cooling, DOHC w/4 valves/cylinder, engine counterbalancer shaft, etc. There still seems to be a significant (albeit dwindling) owners following through the ridersofvision.com website. I keep telling myself I'll repair it someday. Perhaps if I live long enough to retire. Visions could be hard to start in cold weather and like VFR's commonly suffered from charging system issues. Brakes, frame rigidity and and suspension components were not up to today's standards, but on smooth pavement they could handle pretty well. Getting (and keeping) the carburetors dialed in could also be problematic.

'83 Honda 650 Nighthawk: Great example of early 80's UJM. V/reliable and low-maintenance w/shaft drive & hydraulic valve tensioners. Relatively tall o.d. 6th gear allowed just 3.8k rpm @ 60 mph. Sold it to a neighbor after ~ 30k miles who still owns (but rarely rides) it 16 1/2 years later. I'd seriously consider buying a clean, low-mileage example if I came across one. Of course a larger garage would be required as well.

'83 Honda V65 (1100cc) Magna: Purchased used. I called this one my "point & shoot bike"-just pull the trigger in any gear and you were gone! I lusted after a 1100 Sabre but couldn't pass up the V65 for $1.1k w/just 8.8k miles. Almost as powerful as Yamaha's 1st generation V-Max, but handled a lot better. Mine eventually suffered from the effects of the dreaded camshaft wear issues inherent to most of the 1st generation Honda V-4s.

'85 Honda V30 (500 cc) Magna: This one I still have and has been in storage for nearly 10 years. Purchased by my 80 year-old Dad in 1990 w/just 1.1k miles and still has less than 8k. Surprisingly quick when the revs climb pass 7k rpm and has a very smooth-running engine. W/just 500 cc the V30 is fairly gutless at low revs though.

'94 Honda ST1100: Without a doubt the best all-around and most trouble-free motorcycle I've owned to-date.. Over 16 1/2 years & 90k+ miles w/only a few very minor issues so far.I wouldn't hesitate to leave on a ride across the country on it tomorrow. After all these years I'm still favorably impressed every time I ride it (despite the weight). Every time I get back on the ST after riding other motorcycle it "just feels right". So smooth, comfortable and feels so relaxed and effortless at cruising speeds well above any posted speed limits in the U.S.

'98 Triumph T-509 Speed Triple: Less than 14k miles on this early "hooligan" motorcycle. Smooth & lots of torque w/that great triple sound. Unfortunately this one may go on the block soon though. Too many bikes, too little time and not enough storage space. Although the S3 has a lot of character it's just not as refined or as well-engineered as most of the Hondas I've owned. The bug-eyed, praying-mantis look has kinda grown on me over time. Mine is painted "roulette green" and attracts a lot of attention...as does the carbon-fiber Triumph racing exhaust. I count myself lucky to (so far) have avoided receiving any invitations to traffic court while riding this one.

'98 Honda VFR 800FI: My latest love. Like my ST1100 believe I could end up hanging-on to this one forever. Brings a smile to my face every time I hear that V-4 sing through the TBR high-mount.

1992 Honda CBR600 - Great first bike

1999 Honda CBR600 - Great second bike

1998 Suzuki TL1000S - Black, so cool, and sounded the best, still miss it but it was a rack

1997 Suzuki TL1000S - Red, same as above

1998 Suzuki TL1000R - I've modded it about as far as you can and it is a weapon (for sale), will miss badly but must listen to sense and body

2002 Honda VFR - Red, 31K miles and super clean, just had it shipped to Seattle from Oklahoma! Getting aquainted and liking a lot...

  • 8 months later...

I had about 60 different dirt bikes of the YZ, KX, CR, and RM variety, starting with 80's and moving up to 250's. Then I got into street bikes. I bought my first one in 2006. So in this order I have had:

2006 HD Softail

95 ZX-9

99 CBR919

03 HD VROD

03 VFR800.

I've loved all of them. If I had my way I would have several bikes. I think the next one will be a Yamaha WR450, street legal so that I can explore some of the mountain trails around here without trailering.

Currently have an '06 VFR ABS and an '07 Triumph Speedmaster 865cc cruiser.

Prevously an '06 VFR ABS bought new and put 60K on it...sold due to temporary financial glitch and missed it ever since...until I found a new one... :tour:

Before that was an '03 Triumph Speedmaster 790cc, my first bike which served me more than well. Rode it from Vancouver, BC to Chiapas Mexico and all over Mexico before importing and selling it down there.
