Radar Detector Helmet Display Units

So, I almost got nailed by a cop last weekend.

I look down and there is my V1 looking like a xmas tree. Arrow lights going crazy. Luckily, the cop was resting on a nice shaded area and probably sleeping.

I need something in my helmet to alert me of the radar detector going off.

So far, I see 2 options.

Vizalert Radar.

H.A.R.D display.

Any others?

I'm looking for feedback on either. The vizalert seems huge and seems to attach on the outside of the helmet.

Thanks.

I pipe the audio from my 8500 x50 through my Scala q2. Audio is better than visual to me. It's loud enough up to triple digits... :goofy:

only thing about the visalert, doesnt tell you what it is?

Thats a real biggy that I like with my STI and ear bud. Plus you never have to touch it with auto mute

However earbuds can be a pain, and I'm thinking of some kind of speaker set up. The STI came with a speaker but too big to mount in the helmet, but probably loud enough attached to tank bag somewhere.

Drawback, the speaker needs its own power source, which means more prep work

The "Screamer" is another alternative for you verbal types. Being a visual type I use wireless LED in helmet and LED on top of dash.

Could you elaborate more on your wireless LED?

Home made or bought it?

I use a Whistler Cruisader that comes with the wireless head set. The set up is motorcycle specific. I have the black box concealed inside the fairing above the head lights. Control panel to the left of the ignition. Laser detector below the headlights. It works very well except the quality of the components is disappointing. With a bit of effort I have been able to keep it working for 3 years 50k miles.

I have the VIZALERT unit, on a passport escort 8500, really like it. and based on prices and qualities its better than the HARD system in my opinion. Water proof (I rode in the rain from Maine to WV on a 7 day trip and it rained almost every day) and the LEDS are diff colors to display what radar is being used, and it blinks at diff. rates to show the signal strength also. The hard system doesnt. I would highly recommend it.

Speaking of radar detectors, does anyone know if the LEO's running radar can tell if someone is using a detector?

no, they can not be detected, they recieve signal and not transmit. Laser jamers are a diff story since they trasmit a signal to block incoming laser, and effectively tell the cop you are blocking his signal beam.....which by the way is illegal to use. and esecially for you in VA!!!

Yes they can if they are using detector detectors such as VG-2 or Spectre. Most detectors are immune to VG-2.

well the technology is there, but It is not widely used in the united states due to there only being illegal in DC and Virginia, along with all military bases. So that said, why would the police depatments waste time and money on technology that is useless to them when using....since they can not write you for it if its legal to use...

PS- i am in law enforcement and have yet to see a department use it around here or any place I have been to train.

I heard they can tell if they're being used, and myself living in VA, where it's not legal to use one and we can be fined for doing so, and the detector can be confiscated. I would think if it is possible to tell, then the LEO's are going to have them. After all if they couldn't tell the difference why would we not use them........ Monk

I am a huge fan of the Whistler Crusader. I've been using mine for 2+ years and its saved me dozens of times. The helmet mounted display is absolutely necessary. You cant see the dash mounted LED in the daylight. Its easy to install, and detects all bands of radar including laser. The protection the radar detector offers puts me in the front of the pack, and therefore first into the twisties.

Yes, if police have spector 4 radar detection units, there's only a couple RD's on the market that cant be read. Mainly the RD detectors are used in states where Rd's are illegal

Bel STi is one of them, really its the only window RD on the market exempt from spector 4 detection

I just set myself up w/ the Escort 8500 x50 and HARD system. I was happy w/ the HARD, but when I would look down at the detector, even w/ the display on the highest setting I was having a hard time reading the screen. Any suggestions for that? I use the suction mounts for my detector and wedge it between the dash and windscreen. I even have a dark smoke screen which I thought would help keep the sun off it and help me read the display.

Yesterday I was out

Terrorising the back roads, I come into a small town but not paying attention to the speed, the RD gave a kbnd alert, well head of time before seeing anything.

The sti is great for hilly and around the corners

later in the day, I'd just made a few double yellow passes, and got kaband altert well ahead of time before seeing anything.

Instant on kaband is high threat , Rd's will only tell you when they fire, and thats normally when they have already spotted you.

The difference is, they have the same delima till they fire, thats were your eyes and ability come to shut down come into play before they fire. The RD will tell you if you were quick enough

There is an ideal spot for the black box antenna behind the dash between and above the headlights. remove windshield and dash cover and slip it in there. I glued a piece of Styrofoam under it for support. It just fits aimed forward. The radar detector works great though the plastic. I mount the lazer detector below the headlights. The control screen mounted to the left of the ignition and to the clutch hose. I have it powered by the tail light.

At first I mounted it below the headlight but decided it blocked the oil cooler to much. Behind the dash was much better location. I have an LED on top of the dash and the wireless in the helmet.

The components are marginal quality so it took some fussing to get it to work. Twist and wiggle the plug ins if things don't work. I had to spray contact cleaner on the headset switch to get that to work, then bend the battery tabs to make better contact. Buy 20 headset batteries on line for a buck each instead of $5 each at the store. They only last three 8 hour days of riding. The control screen will eventually fog up in the rain and temporarily turn black in the hot sun. Other than that mine works great and is still working after 50k miles. It is cheap, effective, convenient, theft proof.

Forget the screen. If you are not on the brakes before you read it you already have a ticket. What I would suggest is permantly mount your Escort concealed inside your fairing sealed in plastic and wired to your tail light or a relay so it automatically comes on with the ignition. Aim it forward and install behind and above left blinker. It is a hassle to have to remove and reinstall the thing every time you leave the bike unattended. Having an additional LED on the top of the dash is a nice option too for use when you don't have the head set installed in the helmet. I find the dash light adequately visible. It can be wired to the detector ear phone outlet like the HARM is. There would be no laser detection but I have never needed it in 50k miles. I have not seen it used on the remote roads we choose to violate. I don't speed in towns and major highways where laser is used. Detectors are not effect with the quickness of laser.

This is how I would like my next bike set up. It has the features of the Whistler Cruisader with Escort quality at twice the price though.

Don't leave home with out it, not the way we drive.
