2011 VFR800 Crossrunner X (VFR800XD) - Some kind of greasy oily build or leak behind gear lever.

Recommended Posts

Hi. I have no idea what might be behind my gear lever but it doesn't look good to me.

24000km (14900miles)

Serviced each year.

Medium riding with moderate amounts of full throttle acceleration to 2nd, 3rd.

Nothing has been replaced since bought new except the brake pads and the oils.

All oil levels are more or less where I had them at since the last replacement about a year ago.

Nothing to worry about. Chain grease or chain lube, common place for it to ooze out. I regularly get this happening and simply wipe it off with a kerosene soaked rag.

Thanks 🙂 I will clean it up and monitor for a month or 2? I don't really know if how fast it shows up again is too fast.

Behind the front sprocket cover (#1 below on a "99, but judging from your picture, similar on yours)  you may find a large build up of the black sludge I see in the your picture. The heat from your engine will just keep melting the sludge which will require constant cleaning.  Cleaning the area behind the sprocket cover will keep the area cleaner longer than if you just clean the visible area. The cause? what ever you use to lube your chain.

I just cleaned mine a few days ago, big mess with lots of gravel.

I can't believe that I'm typing this out loud, but a quality chain clean/lube product will solve most of this. I've been using Maxima and it is truly magic.

I'd like to say you dont get this mess on the VFR1200F, but its not true. Just overfill the oil in the shaft drive gearbox and see the mess all over the rim the next time you ride it..🙃
