Did feel smell of fuel as I did go down to garage today, sadly the Bandit 600 had started to leak fuel from carbs

large.IMG_20240113_154309.jpg.7811c51dbc453b4547f71066f85a7d50.jpglarge.IMG_20240113_154341.jpg.91446ae471b200355d6594939e6dc707.jpg

Leaking from both connector pipe as one float bowl.

So not that good start whit the Bandit, bummer.

Seems the fuel tap is leaking thro so it needs a rebuild kit, have to see if carbs needs to be taken off to...

As I did take of tank and put it in position it doesn't leak, it didn't go smoothly, the 2 pipes that attached to bottom of tank, one smaller (tank breath pipe) as bigger (drain from fuel cap) the bigger didn't just come along from bike so had to take it off tank, and it was full of water! Well as I later found out, it was plugged!

large.IMG_20240113_155327.jpg.78aedced4459bfd419f88f04b7400d7c.jpg

Mostly I wounder why! Hopefully the pipe inside tank has not a hole.... hopefully just a person that doesn't know what he is doing that been working on the bike, but even that tough is not so nice...

The good thing is that as I bought this in a shop and contacted them and they will pay the fuel tap rebuild kit and if anything more they want to know so promising that way...

Well some more recearch done.

The smaller tube it attached to the rubber inside fuel cap and it's the breather pipe,

large.IMG_20240114_103402.jpg.acf90f0d08e2ae6a2544e8c08a32d587.jpglarge.IMG_20240114_103158.jpg.d13b076f260e0e84d57c15b68b6d4bfd.jpg

As blow in the small tube air comes thro.

The bigger tube, after taking the plug out, if you blow into it you hear air comes out inside tank! This should not happen, as fuel cap removed there is a plastic cone in it!

large.IMG_20240114_103423.jpg.b9c01bcfb4c0d042a4cd22969006d279.jpglarge.IMG_20240114_103224.jpg.ed168a367bde0d7fb99aa355ba053c9d.jpg

And this is not a OEM part! As you blow in the bigger tube air comes out from hole the cone was in, so it's the drain from fuel cap, but if you put a finger on the hole you just hear air comes out inside tank, so clearly this is a repair to fix a drain tube leaking inside tank, bummer 😞. Well have to see how shop respond to this...

And it's not all! As I happen to look at other brake caliper there is a sign of a leak, no drops on flor yet but fluid in between rubber brake tube and pressed banjo. But no leak as you pull brake lever and put pressure in system, weard!large.IMG_20240114_103509.jpg.b85282d7d86de40930dc305690b319b3.jpglarge.IMG_20240114_103502.jpg.d626fe0a666d7b643e8ce28700a382b9.jpg

Starting to think bike might need to go back to shop and money to my account.....

That last sentence I would suggest now indeed Keny.

A serving of whipped cream on a pile of shyte does not make it less off a pile of shyte.... 😁

Well contacted the sell company, a one man company, and he is not willing to whit draw the trade I did as he doesn't have the KLE500 anymore, but offered to pay back the in between money to let me fix it.... Well sure better than non.... But ideal would been to get the KLE trade in value also in cash and let him have the Bandit back..... Oh well....

Do not tell your employer you did a lousy job of inspecting (prior to buying) :goofy:

Well, the bike did feel like a good alternative as I inspected it... Didn't have these issues then...oh well.

As I spent a bit more time inspecting the bike, looks like I was wrong that the fluid on front clipper is brake fluid, it's not, it's most likely fork oil!

large.IMG_20240115_185531.jpg.6700c33d2cf1b25e35d2e0a2d9b8ab9b.jpglarge.IMG_20240115_185520.jpg.e14ae4af0377a8bc79ef8c8bbcef1906.jpg

So this makes I have 3 set of forks that needs to be done 🙈

A bit of brain storming has made me wounder if I could use the tank breather as drain from tank cap? Would be possible if you modify the cap outer ring by taking off the part between tank as cap that has the rubber, and let cap just breath thro the hole from inside cap outer. Like tank caps before. The system is to not letting out petrol gases in hot weather, but as I live in a not that hot climate should not be a problem. Only problem I see is the breather tube is smaller diameter thro perhaps not a deal breaker as you can see the hole better whit cap open compare to the orginal drain and if the bike stands in rain on side stand the drain will not happen before the bike stand up.  Hmmm

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a tool that you can peak inside things whit borrowed from a friend and did a look inside the Bandit tank

large.IMG_20240204_081716.jpg.00cda9e8ce902a2a2c2e899151bffe64.jpg

The connections of the tube , both upper as lower looks good. After this I did plug the upper end and sprayed WD40 into the tub from below (tank upside down) and the leak is after first bend from top so would be possible to cut the metal tube and put a good oil resistant rubber tube in between I think, but it needs to be cut open anyway, might be soldier is a good option to.

Next what I think is the small hole it leaks thro?

large.IMG_20240204_084550.jpg.7446530c8d11f609b9f607eea53bf041.jpg

I think the metal tube is corrode from inside, the upper part as you see inside the tube there is corrosion but not from down looking up. You can't go long in, first bend and the end of this doesn't go deeper

My garage getting more and more organized, and it's time to start to work on the other bike's aside the VFR.

large.IMG_20240303_145600.jpg.6d154116a18b57852fe496decfeb514c.jpg

The FJ needs fork seal change as new diagrams in the carburetors, I have the parts needed. Then the suspension linkage needs also needs some love as it sounds dry. Would love a standard screen instead of the spoiler one that just makes turbolance.

The CBR600 would like a carburetor clean even you could ride it as it is.

I do have been thinking of maybe reducing the bike account..... Mainly as I don't need 4 bikes ( 5 if you count my KDX200 dirt bike that isn't road legal), yes I like bikes and could have a few sport bikes just to look at but mainly like to have bikes I can ride also.

But first all need to be in good riding stat to get best price. Mainly thinking of selling 2 and keep 2 and for the money of the 2sold buy a bike for gravel roads as well, a adventure like bike......

Well it's strange sometimes, you make a good plan to reduce number of motorcycle s you have in your garage, then a few days later a Japanese bumblebee arrive to your garage 🙈

As many bikes I have buoght, the price is low and the bike needs some work.

This bike has a interesting story, former owner buoght it to enter a multi day enduro competition in the classics class as friends from his youth tempted him to come along. He buoght a low mileage bike that was in running order, did take off all extra (mirror's, turn signals..) mounted studded tires and started practice for the race. Eventually entered the race, a winter race, but had a flat in first special test and had a DNF because had not a spare tube or tools to do it along, had planned to ride race on the one tire as there more for fun than competition. I have mixed thoughts of this man, he seems very organized as he did tape all bolts to the part he did take off so easy to know where they belong, still to get the grips changed he cut the other bar weight bolt as it didn't come loose, and worse, he did ride whit the rear studded tire even it was to big diameter and the ends of studded hitting the swingarm!!!! good a good one came along. Mechanical it needs just a few things (aside swing arm change), the decompression oil seal is leaking in cylinder head, carbs need cleaning, don't run Idle but does run whit chocke and sounds good. Has some cosmic bads, fuel tank especially as paint has gone off, probably rubbing against something on way to practice. He seems to like duck tape also, lots of tape here as there even for no reason... lots of cleaning as torn off.

And needs propper size tires that I did pick up on way home, now a NHS front mx tire, rear a 140/80-18 FIM enduro tire, OEM size 110/80-18!

But the more I look close on bike the more I'm convinced the milage on odometer is all the bike has covered. I happen to have the brochure of this bike to!

Cool.  My first real Enduro / Trail bike was an '86 TT350.  Loved that bike and the dual overhead cam engine revved out real good.

I sure like the TT350 as well, sure cool bike

This XT350 actually has a place in my heart if you can say so, because at age on 16 in 1988, near a friends summer home there was one standing at a other summer homes driveway and as I often visited that friend we did stop and dorl on the motorcycle that was a XT350 in exactly same colors! Yamaha used same colors for 3 years in a row fron 1988-90

Forgot to mention I did get a set road tires along that was on the bike as former owner bought it, but they were just to throw in the trash can, DOT stamp say 0196 as 4401 (front/rear) so hard as a rock!

Well a small progress on XT, did install the new front tire as brake disc cover

large.IMG_20240309_094613.jpg.65ff99a29a18170b31fa65594168fba6.jpg

Well I think I have figured out why former owner could not continue the race he entered, the front tire had a bib mousse inner tube that is basically a solid inner tube that give a similar thing as a normal tube whit 0.8-1 bar pressure. The rear has a normal tube so probably the rear bib mousse did melt of the heat ...

large.IMG_20240309_103548.jpg.5ebdf863cb3e63b9984277922dabb434.jpg

Anyway wounder where he found this front Michelin tire, model is C68, never heard of a model named that

large.IMG_20240309_103702.jpg.26385cf861e70ea8bcd05dba30d2e697.jpg

The dot stamp says week 45 83!

large.IMG_20240309_103625.jpg.8554d5ecbfa61154c2906d5617533c61.jpg

Taking off the seat to take away the last of duck tape, that is used all over the bike, found a issue that needs to be sorted

large.IMG_20240309_094635.jpg.e43dceecc010c1f42d3794984596d50b.jpg

Also the air filter was not oiled.... Better go thro the bike good to be safe

It's details that matter, specially if you like to have a motorcycle pass a classic inspection (to be proved it's in excellent orginal condition), a inspection my CBR600F2 have today. So last minute thing is to change license plate bolts to ones that have a white cap

I like your attention to detail!

Do the license plates have to be that size, legally, in Finland? If so, is the plate size strictly enforced?

Here in Ireland it depends on the Garda (our police). Some don't care, some will use it as an excuse to pull you.

Thanks, sadly yes there is only one size, and it's quite big, smaller than I Germany through. Some enduro competition riders make smaller size plates somewhere but they get tickets for it usually.

And for the Bandit 600 a not perfect but for money good tank, yes wrong color as has a small dent but good enough to use one season, then repaint next winter

So small progress on the XT350

large.IMG_20240329_093020.jpg.e4ea22f844bd9d23a6e777180f1b943e.jpg

The old swingarm if taken of whit shock as linkage

large.IMG_20240329_093026.jpg.9be6e6f2bb739c23b0658ae043b03de8.jpg

The good swingarm is painted

large.IMG_20240329_112708.jpg.a30d29c38f5d76aff50661835192aced.jpg

The spring on the rear shock I bought was slightly corroded as the adjust ring, so did change them from the one that was on bike, in picture the corroded spring as damper that has damage from the to big studded tire

large.IMG_20240329_172200.jpg.11ac7525da8767f325e447864087ec14.jpg

The front brake M/C needs more than just new scruvs for the cap, a rebuild kit is ordered....

large.IMG_20240329_112701.jpg.8d694456a3f3a389652b70002783f24b.jpg

Next the decompression level oil leak, could be done when engine was tilted backwards in frame.

large.IMG_20240329_112713.jpg.639a5875e3466cadb28db78b7d487aa4.jpg

Other than that a simple jobb to do, a bit cleaning an back together whit new oil seal

large.IMG_20240329_141502.jpg.1836f6e0874fcca3603cf5d5f337b049.jpg

Did pull carbs apart and ultrasonic cleaned, needs new o rings so still a part that needs to be ordered.... List becoming longer than hopped.

large.IMG_20240329_115948.jpg.9c48443d94c9351907bd5726b2aec760.jpg

Now I sure wounder what this small box is for, looks like connected to the horn 🤔

Need to check the wiring diagram...

The CBR600 now officially a classic motorcycle (a system in my country) and that means low insurance cost, 33€ a year and I'm allowed to use it for 120 days a year.
