Anti-drunk Driving Demonstration Ride In Hong Kong, China

Took part in a demo ride against drunk driving in Hong Kong, China. The tempreature was almost unbearable but it was for a good cause. We had about 90 bikes show up and the local PD were nice enough to provide escort and block off intersections as we proceeded. The ride was also in a way a follow up to a memorial ride for John Desmond Hew. If you follow the racing in Asia, he was one of the top sportbike racers who lost his life about a month ago in HK. A drunk driver hit a car in another district and took off onto the highway to escape arrest and crashed into Demsond who was in the slow lane minding his own business on the way to work at a local bike shop on a scooter. This happened in broad day light at 11am on a saturday morning. Desmond leaves behind a pregnant wife and a child who are coping well considering the circumstances.

The fXXXtard drunk is apparently some local singer's brother and we're hoping he doesn't get off the hook with just a slap on the wrist.

At the end of the ride, our group leader submitted a petition letter to the government for stricter drunk driving laws. Let's hope Desmond rests easier knowing that he is remembered and his passing was not in vain.

Here's some pictures I took to share with you guys:

There were 4 Police version 5th gen VFRs. I'm the one with the 6th gen

Great first post and good photos of a ride for a good cause.

There is a great diversity of motorcycles represented.

A co-worker was setting next to me looking at these photos and it prompted stories of his visits to Hong Kong. Very interesting, sounds like an awesome city.

I always wanted to fly into the old Hong Kong airport. I always heard that was one of life's great experiences.

I agree... Hell of a first post!

Nice shots, and a well written explanation.

I hate drunk drivers. I call them in to the authorities when I see them and I would do it to my father or best friend if I found out that they were on the road while under the influence.

Thanks guys, I've waited 6 years for this (used to live in Vancouver but moved back to HK last minute after paying a deposite for a bike there).

Yea the old Kai Tak airport's got a rich history; key allied staging point during WW2 and apparently one of the most challenging places to land a 747 in the world (short run way, need to fly basically above the roof tops of the surrouding city in order to land, geography of the basin which makes strong draft winds or something). I think they're going to build a cruise liner terminal there soon. Too little of a motors enthusiast prescence in HK to petition for a proper raceway (nearest is Macau or Zhuhai in China).

HK's become much more commercialised in the last few decades, now it's mainly catering to mainlanders from China willing to shovel out cash for LV bags/Chopard watches/etc cause they trust HK stores more to sell the real stuff instead of good knockoffs.

haha yea I get asked all the time at traffic lights/parking my bike/getting gas if my bike's a 1000. I tell them "nah... it's a 800, less power than a 1000, and heavier/porkier than a 600"

It's too bad it seems that drunk driving's the same around the world... must be some sort of psychological explaination to why people feel it's more conveinent to drive themselves home that spans different cultures... I get weird looks when I order mocktails if I'm out with my friends and ride but hey, better a weird look than having to look at your own family/family of victims of drunk driving...

Thanks for the feedback guys, this is a cool forum to see other people's mods and advices, hope to get more rides going with my friend to take more pics soon!
