  1. Well, I sold my Gen 5 so I wont be back until I get a gen 7 or 8. I have a new or like new gen 6 gas tank for sale if anyone needs one (comes with new OE gas cap and key). It is in the classifieds.
  2. I bought this for my franken vfr project that never got off the ground. My loss is your gain. I sold my gen 5 so I have no need for this. If you need more pics let me know, 250.00 shipped to anywhere in the lower 48 states. Or make me a fair offer. Might take me a day or two to respond to your pm.
  3. I took your advice and it worked! I just started it ten minutes ago and zero leaks. I am relieved since I was dreading not being able to drive the vfr this year and only get to ride my twins and inline 4's. Nothing beats the sound of a v4 or a sport bike twin on long rides. I am not going to mark this thread as solved since it may start leaking again and if I does I will revisit my old thread. Thanks to all that replied. It is good to see so many wanting to keep the gen 4 and 3 on the road.
  4. Thanks for all of the replies. I have been driving the bike every year since I bought it and the longest it has sat in storage is about 8 months, with fuel stabilizer. I hope it is a simple fix, since I had to cancel my front tire change appointment yesterday and they are out two weeks during summer bookings.
  5. I finally fired up the gen 4 I bought a few years ago today. I noticed it was from the left side, coming down over the water pump drain bolt. Maybe I should put it on the center stand to see what where it leaks then? I smelled the fluid and it is gas and not coolant. Any ideas about what it could be? The carbs were rebuilt 5 years ago so I am wondering if it could be a fuel line or something.
  6. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-VFR-800-FI-1998-2001-HIGH-PERFORMANCE-SILICONE-RADIATOR-HOSES-BLUE-/162084874400?hash=item25bd02e8a0:g:mkUAAOSwepZXSLBF These are not pricey at all with shipping for a complete set. I am plan on getting a set for my build, zx9r and zx12r. He takes a best offer of some of them/ go 20.00 less. Even after the exchange rate it is still a good deal.
  7. This place says they sell injection mold fairings. Ebay. New message from: heymanspeedmotor (33,125) Hello friend, Yes,this fairing is injection fairing. Yes,all of the 1998-2001 vfr 800 we sell is injection. Any questions, just contact us. Thanks.
  8. Nice. What part of SLC are in you? Nice to see another local.
  9. You gave me some good ideas for the gen 5 build project I have going. I am still gathering parts on the cheap so I am not ready to start a thread yet. I have a 2004 R1 front end with everything except the upper triple clamp. But I have the wheel, complete front brakes with lever, and MC and of course, the forks and lower triple. Came a from a salvage tip over insurance claim r1. I wonder if I finding fork extensions for my forks will come in handy. I was planning on using 954rr clip-ons since they will fit to this fork set up. Too bad my gen 5 ones with not work since I would prefer to keep them. They are too narrow. And I like what you did to keep the rear brake. I want to do that since I already have the complete rear brake from the gen 5. When the time comes, I would rattle can the front fender. I read somewhere that the r157 paint is really some 60's GM red color... Here is a link that I am planning on referencing if I decide to paint some parts... http://www.xjrider.com/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=934&sid=cf1070764d2bd23adc45b3471f1561cb&start=10
  10. Nice. What year r1 front end did you use? It looks like you used the entire front end. Are those 954rr clip ons?
  11. I say track it. If you lay it down, you will not feel to bad since it will still look more or less the same. And you can have some fun with it down the road if you want. Get some airtech fairings and some custom paint if you want. I would keep the pipe if I were you, or at least get some kind of exhaust. You will be doing more high rpm riding at the track and I think you would want to hear that v4 exhaust sound while doing it.
  12. Sorry guys, I do not have pics. The reason is I did not think my idea would work and was actually very surprised when it did. It is pretty easy though. For the oil filter change all you need is small hands and you can reach around the header to remove the filter. I have a 3inch tall mini ratchet and about 6 oil filter wrenches for various filters diameters. The mini ratchet was needed to break the filter loose for me. Then removed my hand. A girl did this for me. I would suggest placing some old rags underneath the filter to catch the dripping oil. You either go for the filter from the left or right side, cant remember now. It is one for the other obviously. Drain plug obviously can be removed without removing plastics all day long. The coolant part is easy. Just look where the water pump drain bolt is. It is a low torgue bolt and you mini ratchet will easily break that loose. All water pump drain bolts are in the same general location on motorcycles. Remove the two top bolts on the top of fairing to access the radiator cap( on the right while sitting on the bike). Get a dollar store flexible funnel and you are in business. I did the same idea on my zx12r and this time removed the water pump bolt. Man that came spraying out. All over in the inside of the fairing. No biggie since I did 3 refills with water and 3 warm ups till the fan went on and then drained. I always do that to get coolant in the engine block to mix with the water and that only happens of the thermostat opens up.
  13. Great work bringing the 3rd gen back to life.
  14. I did not bother to read every page of this read. That said, I would like to be added for a full system for the Gen 5 if/when they become available. I have 8 motorcycles from various makes, so I am not always on this site and sometimes go months without logging in. So if you do not see me please don't remove me. You can always pm me and I will see the email from the site that says I have a PM.
  15. I recently changed the oil on my 96. All of the DIY videos etc required the removal of fairings. I hate doing that for several reasons, so I tested a theory. If you have hands small enough or know someone that does you can remove oil filter without removing the fairings. The girl I am dating is 5'4 and 112lbs and she was more than happy to give it try. Sure enough it came out with some careful maneuvering. It did leak some oil on the header, but who cares. It all dripped off while I let the oil do a good long drain. I also drained the coolant without removing the fairings too. Granted, I did not change the coolant in the overflow bottle since it was fine. But for a yearly or every other year coolant drain all you need to do is loose the water pump drain bolt with a mini ratchet to break it free, the use your fingers to loosen it to the point where it is about to come out. I never removed all the way. A small wrench will work too since I tried that as well. It is a 10mm or 8mm bolt. It will come out as a fast stream/leak into your pan. Then I poured more water in to until it came out clear and then tightened it up. Of course, I filled it back up with water, burped it and then ran it to it operating temp to open the thermostat and get the left over coolant to mix with the water. Wait for a cool down then repeat. Total labor was maybe 30-45minutes tops. I don't count the waiting time since I was off doing other things while it was cooling down. I used super tech all makes all models coolant, made by prestone.
