I use a Beltronics RX65. You can find them on eBay at decent B-I-N prices below $200. It does not run on batteries, so you need to create a power supply on your bike. I use a Powerlet with a cigarette lighter adaptor, which allows me to easily transfer it for use in the cage.

Mine sits on top of my tank bag via strategically-placed velcro patches. It's very sensitive and does not require pinpoint placement through your windshield. In fact, it picks up radar signals behind me. I pipe mine discretely into my helmet, as opposed to it sending out a chirping audible louder than running a straight pipe.

There was a good review at http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Radar.html . Scroll down the screen past the GPS review to see the one on detectors.

Who makes the best one to put on the bike? I dodged a MAJOR ticket the other day. It would have cost me more than a detector.

Good job on the dodge, I just installed a Whistler Crusaider last weekend, not quite enough time with it to write a review yet, but so far I am impressed. I bet I could install one on another VFR in less than an hour. They are still on sale at for 199.00 WITH the wireless helmet LED

I think the best way to go is a V1 hardwired with either a Screamer or H.A.R.D. helmet LED. That Crusaider at less than half the price is a great deal (if the performance is decent), but once you've used a V1 with the direction arrows, you wouldn't want to go without them. Both my streetbike and my cage are wired for my V1.

The V-1 is still the Top rated detector on the market followed closely by the Beltronics STi Driver & Escort 9500I, all list for $400 plus.

I use the V1 on the VFR !

I use their headphone adapter box with headphone speakers in my helmet!

I have a buddy that I ride with that just got the V-1, it will be interesting to see how they compare, the biggest reson I went with Whistler was the stealth factor. The V1 was the ONLY other detector that I would buy, they do have a better rating than Whistler, 5 for V1,, 4 for Whistler

Steve did stop by last week and told me he had been stopped for 7 over the limit, he got off with a warning but the cop did ask him,,, SOOO, how did that detector work out for you???

Its suctioned to the windshield, pretty easy to see, and he has to take it with him all the time. Pros and Cons with everything.

After we ride together I will post up on how they do in a side by side comparison, it was us two that needed them one day,,,86, in a 55,, and I'm glad he got us when he did, we were almost to the fun part of the road, pretty sure the bikes woulda been on a tow truck.

The V1 did Nothing for my last ticket, 82 in a 55 with Lazar. Thing never even went off. :goofy: They'll help with over 50% of the Radar tickets you might have gotten, but Lazar and Instant-On will still nail your butt. <_<

I have a whistler crusader... I have about 4000 miles of riding with it and I love it, mounter it in a accessory/farkle box that is mounted to the stem... I hate drilling the farings to mount stuff, and the angle was not right. it also has a volt gauge and thermometer which is a added plus... just keep the rear sensor wires away from and other ignition wires as the will give false warnings from the rear ( had to unplug the rear sensor on a recent ride )

Remote mounted Whistler 3500 with voice module "talking" to me via an set of ear bud phones....

Also doubles as a great voltage meter...

Here is the business end mounted under the front fairing. The temp probe is the little thing to the right...

The laser receiver is mounted behind a "back painted" windscreen with a little "window" for it to "see" through...

Disregard the two black strips. These are electric tape on the painted side of the screen to stop scratching bu the mounting hardware. It only shows up in photographs, can't see it in real life...

I use the Beltronics rx65 and it has paid for itself many times. In map pocket of tank bag. Laser pretty worthless; goes off to announce a ticket but all else is very good. Instant on will work if other traffic near by is being monitored. If you are the dude well.... Jeannie Mucklestone.

I have similar set-up with V-1. I also installed the remote display on the top of the dash, as it allows me to glance down quickly upon hearing the beep to see what/where the threst is coming from.

Can anyone direct me to a good "overview" of the different types of ways Johnny Law can get you? E.g. radar, laser, etc.

With the new "50 km over" law up here, I'm seriously thinking about getting a detector and I need to get edu-macated about this stuff.

RD's are illegal here and I wanted to find something I could keep inside my jacket out of view or a complete stealth permanent mount with ear bud alarm. Anything like that available? I have a buddy that got pulled over and ticketed because the cop saw his RD mounted on the stem when they passed in slow traffic. Of course he had it for a few years and it saved his ass several times.

Obviously not the most "ideal" location but with a ziploc bag wrapped around the detector it certainly makes it weatherproof and out of sight. I have used a cord to my earspeakers but am currently using a Marc Parnes LED Visual Alert. It works well for me. YMMV

In two states radar detectors are illegal -- VA and DC. And I live in VA. :offtopic: So what do I use? Beltronics STi Driver, a top-rated detector that can't be detected when in use. I use a set of Sure E2C ear buds with the STi Driver. These ear buds block out wind noise (nice for the MP3 player also), so I can hear the detector really well and when the detector silent, the ear buds are like having in a nice set of ear plugs. I like the audio alerts better than a light indicator since I get more info -- i.e., type of radar that the unit is detecting. I've been very happy with the service from Beltronics. They've been responsive, knowledgeable and courteous whenever I've had a question or request. I can't even count the times the puppy has saved my ass. It has payed for itself many times over. It's gotten to the point that I basically never ride without it.

For my '06 Concours, I mount the detector on a foam wedge that is "velcroed" to the dashboard; and for the VFR I put a strip of velcro on the tank bag and mount the detector right to the top of the bag, or even inside the map compartment. I hard-wired the power cord and store it in the top clamp hole. Here are some pics:

Hmmmm - I pulled this quote from the "Compare Radar Detectors" section of the second link posted above...

"If you live in an area where radar detectors are illegal (Virginia, Washington DC & some countries including parts of Canada) and you can afford $449.95 then the Beltronics STi is the unit for you. In areas where detectors are illegal enforcement uses RDD's (Radar Detector Detectors) to find vehicles using radar detectors. The Beltronics STi Driver is the only detector on the market that is immue to all RDD technologies. If you dont travel to these area's then the Beltronics RX65 for $120 cheaper is the better Beltronics choice."

Expensive, but possibly worth it!? Here in Ontario, they can impound your bike and fine you up to 10 Grand for going 50 km/h over!

Remember when those OPP kept overtaking us on the way up to the Soo?? A detector would have saved me several heart attacks!!

I have thought about getting a radar detector hard wired into a stealth location of the bike. I am concerned that if they were to find it they would impound the entire bike instead of just the radar detector. The officer is to confiscate the detector if he finds one, but if it is hard wired to the bike he might just take the whole bike until such time as the two can be separated. I doubt the officer would give me the time to remove the detector on the shoulder of the highway while he waits.

The trick that I would like to try is to download a list of common radar trap locations into a GPS. They do this for radar cameras in Europe, but it could also be useful for radar in North America. I have found a radar trap point of interest data base on the internet, but the file is for a Garmin GPS and I have a Magellan.

I have tried using a CB radio to listen to trucks on the highway, but that was marginally better than useless. Trucks don't seem to speed much anymore because most of them have speed limiters. Consequently they don't seem to say anything when they see a cruiser. I'd like to try a police band scanner to see if that would help. Maybe the conversation between the cruiser and dispatch would give clues about the locations of the cruisers.

I guess I could just slow down a little, but that wouldn't be much fun.

That expensive unit I mentioned above looks like it would only have one connection - to the power. Perhaps our VA friend (cbennett5199) from a few posts up could comment on how quick it can be removed?

The other bonus of that one is that it's non-detectable...
