Another Radar Detector Thread

Going tomorrow to get another radar detector, I abused my old one and let if in the rain while riding, not realizing it was still out. It comes on, but beeps all the time :P So, I've been looking between the Escort 8500 x50 and Beltronics 995/965/955 Radar detectors. Any suggestions on how well they work or any of them I should stay away from? My last one was a k40, which was ok, but not all that, my whistler worked almost as well if that tells you anything, just didn't' filter well enough.

The Bel RX65 is supposed to be almost as good as the V1, for under $300. That's what I'm saving my ticket money for...

The RX65 and X50 are the same detector. The RX65 offers voice alerts and a band used in Canada. Bel and Passport are owned by the same parent company. http://www.radarbusters.com/

I ride with a X50. Very good range. I hear them b4 I can see them, when, when, remember this, when they have their radar gun on and broadcasting toward another vehicle. It is a great detector in traffic.

It is a technique here in Iowa, that the patrolman and sherriffs use instant on and lately, laser. Usually when I am by myself, I see then long b4 they hit me with the radar. Sometimes they wait until I am within 200 yards or so. Ina a situation like that, if you have not slowed down yet, you earned the right to pay a tax for speeding.

I would never buy something that's "almost as good as a V1".

I'd buy a V1.

In fact, I bought my first V1 a decade ago, when I realized it was significantly better than my trusty old Escort. It's **mandatory** for me to even pull out of my driveway.

And now I use it on my bike, combined with the Remote Audio Adapter--Item 20200 [Motorcyclist? Headphone user? Here's a way to move V1's audio warnings anywhere you want them. Compact module has a speaker and two headphone jacks (one mini, 3.5mm; and one micro, 2.5mm). You also get remote control of all Control Knob and Lever functions including mute and computer modes; handy when you've mounted V1 out of reach. Connects with standard V1 power cords. Compact case measures 0.9-in. H x 2.5-in. W x 1.6-in. D. ] and the Marc Parnes bright-ass LED display. To fire the Parnes LED, you must use V1's Remote Audio Adapter, as the basic V1 has no headphone jack or other auxilary output.

The whole deal looks like this. I used of 3M Dual Lock to firmly attach the LED to the top inside edge of the windscreen, as well as on the Tech Mount to V1 and V1 to adapter. Don't use standard Velcro for any of this mounting stuff. It allows too much jiggling/bouncing. But don't use too much Dual Lock either.....you'll NEVER get it apart!

I'm setting up a simular light warning system on my bike. I'm putting 3 ultrabright led's on each side of my windscreen ( down that plastic peice you remove to take windscreen off ) and setting them up to flash w/ radar alarm. That will be a next week job.

When I first set up my LED array, I first put it on top of the V1 adapter. Not good. Couldn't see it in "real use" on the road.

Then I put it at the top of the dash, figuring I'd see it. Not good. Couldn't see it in "real use" on the road, either!!

So it ended up as much in my field of vision as I could get it...thus it's at the top of the windshied. As bright as this thing is at night, it's still hard to see in the bright, warm Florida sun during the day.

He should be able to get an extra box or two of them set aside for us. :salesman:

I haven't had the best of luck with the Passport X50. I bought mine in May 2006..I've had to send it back to the factory twice for repairs. If you get an Escort product make sure you get the extended warranty and a Valentine for a backup when the POS X50 is in the shop.

When I bought my Bel Vector 995 it was the only detector at the time that would pick up the KU Band but I bought it simply because it was the best that I could afford at the time. No tickets yet.

If you can get 40% off then you're set!!

I just use the headphone jack on mine. It has a Y to my I-pod and works great. I considered the LED but I dont want to look down for false alarms.

Ive posted this before but i have the Bel995 from circut city. You can have it set to the voltmeter setting and keep an eye on you R/R . I also purchased the 4 year warranty, where you just bring it in and get a brand new model. No mailing off or refurbished junk. The stats show its got the V1 coverage and more features, like the voltmeter. Its says its upgradeable. I only wished it told the direction like the V1. The direction would help me more if I were in my car.

My detector has definately paid for itself.

Is the Ku band currently in use in US?

Nope. From the V1 website's FAQ:

Question: I travel a lot in Europe. Will V1 work over there?

- R.K., New York

Answer: Yes, with a few caveats. K and Ka bands there are the same as in the US, so all V1s (after a few very-early models) will work as good there as here. Ku band is found in Netherlands, Belgium and sometimes the UK (but not in the US). We've recently added Ku coverage with serial numbers ending 0600 or higher. Earlier V1s do not cover Ku.

What the Europeans call X band is sometimes different from the X band used in the US. So even the latest V1 could have this one blind spot.

Back to Ku for a moment, current-production V1s have coverage on that band installed but not "activated" as they leave the factory. For do-it-yourself instructions on activation, see www.valentine1.com/lab/mikeslabrpt3.asp elsewhere in this site.
