muzzammil
Hi everyone! My 2007 suddenly couldn't start even though I was able to ride it to work this morning. It's completely stock though I've done the flapper and snorkel mod as well as disabling the pair system. Some things to note, before this, on cold starts, it did take like a second longer cranking before starting and it would idle very low at 600-800 rpm. When it got to 70-90°C (158-194F) it would stabilise at 1000 rpm. Also don't mind the fuel gauge, it's inaccurate and shows empty even though I have enough petrol. There's also a flashing red light on the right side of my dash, saw on some videos that would be for the ABS but mine doesn't have ABS and the light is unmarked. I should have listened for the fuel pump priming but I was in a rush and didn't pay attention, the voltage also seems fine. Please advise on what the problem could be! Member Contributer bmart Posted September 11 Member Contributer Share Posted September 11 What is the fine voltage measurement when the bike is cool, at idle, and at RPM?
vfrpilot28
Have you searched up here? Could be a number of things and it is a bad practice to replace without testing components. Check out the how to guides:
Member Contributer Terry Posted September 11 Member Contributer Share Posted September 11 I'd be inclined to try the flooded engine clearing method. Open the throttle fully and then hit the starter for a few seconds. Then release the throttle and try again. Poor starting is one of the characteristics of insufficient valve clearance, have they ever been checked/adjusted? If your engine idle is very low when cold the wax unit may well be seized in the hot position. Easy enough to visually check with the airbox removed, when cold the wax unit nut pulls down on the starter valve linkage and the starter valves should be visibly open. So does this light normally go out above 10kph OR does it just stay On all the time annoying you? Has the ABS lens/legend been removed from the front of the light? 2. The all important question - At Ignition switch ON - Does Both HISS Light And the Fi light come On, then go OFF after 2 -3 Secs AND do you hear the Fuel Pump Prime? 3. Why haven't you bothered to look into your Fuel Gauge problem? 4. Is your Instrument Panel original? I have doubts! 5. Assume you have two Ignition HISS Keys. Have you tried the other key? As a side issue warm engine idle should be set to 1200rpm.
Member Contributer Cogswell Posted September 12 Member Contributer Share Posted September 12 Out of gas? How long has the fuel gauge been blinking? Just curious, every 6th gen I've seen (in the US) has a small, round block off to the left of the ODO trip reset button. Yours appears to have a plunger type of switch poking out. Pardon my ignorance - what is that - OEM or something added on?

The switch you are referring to is the H.I.S.S "Useless Switch" ! By default the HISS Light (in the Tacho) will flash at a two second rate for 24hrs once the Ignition Key is removed, then turns the light off, a kind of security deterrent. The switch allows you to disable or enable this function. With the three previous 6 gens I've owned, all with HISS, I've never bothered touching the button, completely useless!.

I actually quite like that feature and wish the HISS light would flash for longer than 24 hours. Its a great deterrent to keep scumbags away from your bike - they see the flashing light and just move on to something without a light that seems easier to take. That's why I never touched the switch, meaning the light was always flashing for the 24hrs after removing Ignition Key. Never wanted to disable the function. Same goes for my 8gen (can be disabled or enabled via the instrument panel menu system)
