Scottyrich4
Hey all. Asking to see if anyone has experienced this. 94 vfr750 all stock. When my son rides and returns to put the bike away for the night the next morning it starts right up. He’s never pushing the bike up to the upper RPM range and he says the Speedo works just fine. When I ride let’s say I’m a little less responsible and ride it a little faster. I notice when I get into the upper RPM range say >7000 the speedo will go to zero, jump back to what is probably correct and then just keep bouncing. When I park the bike 1 hour later the battery is dead. is there a charging issue occurring. any thoughts thsnk all
Member Contributer Mohawk Posted June 14, 2023 Member Contributer Share Posted June 14, 2023 That is weird behaviour. I know when the RR went on my 800, the speedo stopped working followed by the rev counter as battery power faded. Then the bike stopped at around 10.5v. Sounds like you have a failing RR. Check all the charging circuit connectors, test the output on the alternator on all 3 poles & at various RPM"s. If possible fit a volt meter even if temporary that you cam see when riding. Scottyrich4
Thanks. Seems to only happen when it’s ridden in the upper reverse band
Member Contributer mello dude Posted June 14, 2023 Member Contributer Share Posted June 14, 2023 Got a multimeter? Do the basic voltage check at the battery...idle and 5000rpm. Instruments going wonky is sometimes a pointer to a charging issue.
Member Contributer bmart Posted June 14, 2023 Member Contributer Share Posted June 14, 2023 My 5th gen did that and it was corroded stator wires.
Member Contributer Cogswell Posted June 16, 2023 Member Contributer Share Posted June 16, 2023 Once you have an on-board voltmeter, you'll wonder why Honda did not include that as standard equipment. The link is to an old thread where pics are posted of how owners mounted them - there's a ton of creativity in it. Some of the pics are gone, but there are still a lot of good ideas here. And, it doesn't need to cost much. Definitely a worthwhile mod IMHO. https://www.vfrdiscussion.com/index.php?/forums/topic/70384-post-your-voltmeter-mount-pics/
Member Contributer bmart Posted June 16, 2023 Member Contributer Share Posted June 16, 2023 A few pics of mine. I'm lazy and like to use the tender cable on mine. My voltmeters also run my cheapo phone/GPS w/Osmand.
