AdamC
Hey all I have had to buy a new main harness for my abs model 2003,(heated grips wiring melted). I have one from a 2006 which appears to have different ECU connectors. Does anyone know if it's simply a case of changing out the connectors? Member Contributer Cogswell Posted December 21, 2021 Member Contributer Share Posted December 21, 2021 Unfortunately, it's not likely. 2002 to 2005 shared one ECU and ABS control unit, 2006 through 2009 have different units. Both are different part numbers from their earlier counterparts. Note also that the ABS pulser ring on your '03 front wheel is different from the 2006 and up units. I'm not an engineer nor geeky enough to get deep in the weeds on either, but the difference in ABS pulse generators might indicate that the ABS module from later models are looking for a different signal profile and simply replacing connectors on the wires leading to the unit are not necessarily going to make it work properly. What differences there are in ECU's beside VTEC engagement RPM settings I don't recall being documented in any threads here. Honda may have changed the connectors simply to keep modules from being installed on bikes they were not meant for, but there could be other substantive reasons. It's probably going to be easier to just find the correct wiring harness for your '03 than try to find that specific connector to swap it and hope it works. I don't know of any source for Honda connectors other than the generic ones for bulbs, charging system, etc. Swapping might be fine, but it will be tedious and would not be guaranteed to work and I'm guessing you'll find it very difficult to locate that connector. How come you need to replace the main wiring harness? That seems rather extreme. Are you sure damage caused by the after market heated grips can't be repaired? Was the heated grip wiring properly fused, and did that fuse blow? Can you establish exactly what is and what isn't working? Can you provide more details? AdamC
The wiring between the grips has melted all the insulation off, and also down along inside the main harness that they were integrated into melted the insulation from wires associated and surrounding. Seems easier to swop out the harness than start stripping it. But I wasn't banking on a 2006 model having different ecu connectors. I have pulled the pins from those connectors but now need to order the correct pins for my bikes connectors and no idea what pins I need.
Member Contributer JZH Posted December 24, 2021 Member Contributer Share Posted December 24, 2021 Assuming it is simply a matter of the connectors, that's not going to be easy...but it should be possible. Japanese automotive manufacturers nearly always use outsourced connectors and terminals, which are all available in the aftermarket in Japan, so it is a matter of identifying the exact connector manufacturer and connector family and tracking down the associated terminals, seals, etc. A good source is https://www.hi-1000ec.com/, but you may need to do more research elsewhere. Another, more motorcycle-focused source is https://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Elec__Products/Connectors/connectors.html. In the US (you may get lucky), try https://cycleterminal.com/. Note also, that many of these specialist terminals require the use of special (and expensive) crimpers: you CANNOT get good results using the wrong crimper!
