    Use red rubber grease, not just any oil based grease. The latter will likely bloat the rubber. Bought a jar in 1985, still not empty 40 years on. Even after lending it to my pals.

    I bought one new in 1989, sold it in 1997 to buy my VFR750F.

    Have you been riding in the rain or (power)washed your bike recently? If the sparkplug holder cap was not on fully (or ripped), water may gave ingressed. Mixed with some accumulated dirt appearing to be oil. If it looks, feels, smells and tastes like oil though.....

    Just because it can be done.... (proved to be a bit more "involved"..) The OEM side carter is now a spare ornament.. Planning to ride some 7,000km on her this year, so new tyres are in order. The rear Yokohama (now Shinko) dates back to 1991.... Front brake powerrrrrr...
