Yo, first off Im not selling my 01 VFR.

I am interested in importing a Honda 400cc inline 4 as this is the max size for the lowest insurance bracket here in Van, B.C.

When I was young I had a CB550F as I could not find a CB400F. I found the size of bike enough for fun and mid lenght trips. Here there are mainly single and paralel twins for sale, I want an inline 4.

The Japanese market has a pile of these bikes and many styles made from most of the manifactures.

I have just started to do the research, has anyone imported from Japan?

Any info would be great.

You should get in touch with Windbell if you haven't already (http://www.windbell.ca). They have imported dozens of grey market bikes from Japan to BC.

I rode an FZR400 for a while for the reasons you've listed. That was a hoot!

I'm always on the lookout for a good NC39 "Spec 1" CB400SF Hyper VTEC here in the UK (where they show up every once in a while--usually in silver, like your pic).

I have no idea about vehicle import laws in Canada, but in the USA doing this is "discouraged".  There are vehicle exporters in Japan who will help you get what you want, but the language barrier will probably make it a very frustrating experience.  It would be more expensive but certainly less hassle to have an experienced importer get you one ready to go on the road where you live.  One of my enduring fantasies is to take two weeks, fly to Japan, load up a 20' container with JDMs and import the lot of them back here (in the UK, where the process is much easier).  All I need is the time...and the money!

In Canada, as long as the motor vehicle is at least15 years old, you're good to go.

It it has to pass an out of province inspection when it arrives before it can be registered, and the correct paperwork must be filed with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles, but other than that, you're good to go.

Check the RIV website for more info.

Another thing I have to look into first is the availablity of these "grey market" bikes parts. I'vw heard it can be tuff but I will call the Honda dealer I have delt with for the last 30 years and find out.

JZH is better equipped to answer that question than me, but there is a LOT of exchange on parts between Honda models.

If if you ask your local dealer, they will be clueless. You would need to provide them with a valid part number for a CANADIAN domestic model bike, which part you know will interchange with your JDM bike.

I imported a HawkGT  from the US about 5 years ago and I couldn't believe how easy it turned out to do. I read through all of Canada customs and RIV stuff to try and decipher all the legalities. Most of it didn't apply to what I was doing.

If the vehicle is more than 15 years old you don't need to go through RIV. They are exempt.

You will need the Canada customs paperwork completed, vehicle title, and good documentation of what you paid for it (just a bill of sale won't cut it).

Most Honda dealers won't just be clueless, but possibly even resentful that you didn't buy a bike from them!  You might find someone helpful, though.  Just don't expect them to be very knowledgeable about a bike they have likely never seen before and don't have any official information from Honda about.  You will probably have to become your own expert...

The CB400 Super Four has been around for ages in one form or another, though the closest US/Canadian model would probably be the late 1990s NC27 "CB-1" (but that model did not have Hyper VTEC).  Good luck!

As long as it's 25 years old,it's not hard to do into the US and even newer than that, there are dubious ways. If you are looking for a neat JDM bike anywhere,I strongly suggest contacting Naomi at Miyabee Plus, she will have it crated and sent to a port pretty much anywhere.
