Rear shock on a 2008 ABS

Hi

I think I screwed up a bit on my bike when I did not notice the hose to the preload adjuster was placed by the exhaust pipe. Now my exhaust has burned a hole in the hose and preload is no longer working.

What are my options now? If someone has a hose they don't need I am willing to buy that and refill the preload. Or should a get a new stock shock absorber? The supply for used parts here are between slim and nothing. I know Öhlins have shocks for my bike, but they are a bit expensive ($1000-$1200). Any other brands of new shocks that will fit?

Thanks

Thomas

Check with  member Jamie Daugherty. He rebuilds shocks and may have what your need.

I would ask Jamie for an upgraded shock.  About 400 USD plus shipping to Norway.  Might as well invest, since you're spending.

This, plus an upgrade to the front springs/valves makes a huge difference in handling.

I had a look on Jamies site, and I must say it's tempting to go for a CBR600F4 rear shock. It's cheaper than the original shock. I guess I'll contact him and ask about shipping it to Norway.

I can still use the bike (in fact I didn't notice it had failed until I wanted to make an adjustment to it). I would prefer to not send my shock half around the world. The season is not long up here in the north.

Thomas,

I have a 2007 abs shock with the preload adjuster - I suspect it's the same hose.

Just pay the postage, it's yours.

I bought the f4 shock from Jamie for my 02, as well as the full fork kit - worth its weight in gold!  Good luck whichever way you go.

The hose is nothing special - any specialist that fits hydraulic hoses for industrial equipment, race cars, trucks, etc. should be able to custom make one for you for very little.  The trick would be to bleed the air from the hydraulic oil.  There was a thread on the ST 1300 forum where someone explained how to do it.

If you follow the factory procedure it's a major pain.  Here's a thread I posted a while back with photos.

If you go with the F4 shock upgrade you can just cut the hose and pull the shock out and skip removal of the undertray.  On the other hand, having a hose made is cheap and the preload adjustment is a snap.  Pros and cons to both.  Here's another thread with some discussion about bleeding the preload adjuster with a link to the ST forum where it's also discussed.
