VFRFahnder
I picked up a new-to-me 98 VFR. The grip comes too close to the tank on one side. I want to loosen the pinch bolts and see if the bars will straighten out. I have a manual en route from eBay so I cannot determine the spec at this time. (Also, the online manual link on the forum is taking forever to download.) Any help would be appreciated.

Member Contributer zupatun Posted October 2, 2013 Member Contributer Share Posted October 2, 2013 20 ft.lb seemed too high. I checked three references in my Honda manual. One says 20 ant three others say 16ft-lb. Similar bolts into Aluminum are also marked at 16 ft-lb... Anyone else confirm 20ft-lb or 16-ft-lb? Member Contributer vfrurknee Posted October 2, 2013 Member Contributer Share Posted October 2, 2013 The numbers I quoted are from the Honda Service Manual, page 13-2. The Handlebar pinch bolt is the first value listed at the top of the page just below the TORQUE VALUES heading.
Member Contributer zupatun Posted October 2, 2013 Member Contributer Share Posted October 2, 2013 I read Fork pinch bolts as...axle pinch bolts...my bad. Axle pinch bolts are 16 ft-lb...fork pinch bolts are as you state 20 ft-lb. Apologies for my confusion.
Mrbiggabit
According to the Haynes manual and the the service manual which I've just downloaded because i doubted the Haynes setting for the bottoms... The top pinch bolts should be 23 Nm and the bottom pinch bolts 49 Nm The relevant torque settings are on page 20 of the 98-01 service manual hope this helps.
