Monk
Here's a video of why and how to bed / burnish brake rotors and pads. I liked the whole vid, but if you want to cut to the chase, start at 11 min. in......... http://www.essexparts.com/learning-center/cat/brake-rotors/post/Bed-in

V4 Rosso
Yes, very informative. I've never bedded the brakes in on my VFR, only on my ATB and it makes a huge difference both in stopping power and longevity. With my next new pads I'll follow this procedure too on the VFR. Guest ZingerVT
Monk, Good video worth bookmarking. While I have bedded new sets in, the visual from this video will assist the next time around. Glad you shared.
NakedViffer
Excellent video, Monk! I was taught to do this years ago, though slightly different, it always helped braking with new components. But I didn't understand the science behind it, and that it needs to be done regularly for best performance. Very good info.

Monk
Also the "don't come to a complete stop while they're hot", was a good one. Glad it was useful, It was to me!
Member Contributer Belfry Posted August 5, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted August 5, 2012 Thanks, Monk. I thought the point of bedding brakes was to get the new surfaces mated, I didn't know about the whole pad material-transfer aspect. Interesting.
Monk
Thanks, Monk. I thought the point of bedding brakes was to get the new surfaces mated, I didn't know about the whole pad material-transfer aspect. Interesting. Me either........ Makes me wonder if cleaning the rotor with brake cleaner will remove the transfer........... At least I know what to look for (to see if the colour changes). spud786
If you notice stock pads are designed to not need Break in procedure, they have limited contact in the first 1/4% of the pads. But normally I just dont do hard braking for 50 miles or so.
