ChiAlex
Ladies and gentlemen, For those of you that do not change their own tires, who do you trust to do it in or near NYC? I live in an apartment and buying HF changer is out of the question right now. I did it once before, but it was hell without a proper bead breaker and air compressor. Congrats on spring's arrival. Thanks, Alex.
Member Contributer Rice Posted March 12, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted March 12, 2010 I tried a bunch of places and all of them wanted an arm and a leg to do it. I finally bought some spoons and a balancer and do it myself. Tire changer is not mandatory.

What do you use to break bead? personally.. i have used a big C clamp from harbor freight..i have also put the wheel on a big sheet of wood and drove my van over the edge of the tire. both worked out well. SEBSPEED
Any car tire shop that has a tire changer in this style, can change your bike tires for you. Then you just have to balance, which you can do at home. That is a Hunter brand changer, not sure what other brands make that style of changer, but now you have a pic so you can call and have them describe their changer to you. Most shops that deal with very large and/or expensive wheels will have this type of machine.

You do have to butt the wheel against a wall or it will slip out.

Member Contributer Rice Posted March 12, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted March 12, 2010 Where in NYC are you? If you don't mind risking a few scratches on your rims, :warranty: you may consider coming over and I'll give you a hand one of the fine weekends. I'm in Sheepshead Bay. I'm in Manhattan, but my bike is stored in Bergen Beach now. Let me get the tires and I may take you up on your generous offer. Beer is on me. Alex. Member Contributer Macs06VFR Posted March 12, 2010 Member Contributer Share Posted March 12, 2010 I'm partial to the scrap wood/truck method too. D@mn Seb, that's a right fancy looking getup! I might have to steal that concept... no patents, right?
