Essential Mods

Alaskan

Question

I have a 6th Gen VFR. The first mod was obvious - a new saddle. Now what's next? New exhaust? PowerCommander? New rear shock and front fork springs? Heated handgrips for the Alaska falls and springs? Carbon fiber hugger (Hah! Not really.)? What are the opinions on my next mod?

The list goes on to 468...

What don't you change with that list? The list of stock parts remaining is probably shorter.

The first thing I did was to install Helibars. They made the bike way more comfortable in my opinion.

depending on what kind of riding you plan on doing I would say you need some heated grips for sure

if you plan on long rides heli bars or shorter rides the biggest bang for the buck would be -1 on the front sprocket or 2 up on the rear. save your power commander money and set your suspension up for your wieght.

For my '03-

1. Install the heated grips I picked up in Japan- after the recall work is done

2. Better tires- OEM's are slightly scary when cold or wet in twisties

3. Motorcycle-specific GPS for trip to Moab/Monument Valley/PCH/Sonoma/Yellowstone (I have six weeks' vacation coming to me and I plan to use most of them this summer)

4. ERC at the start of every season

Related stuff off the VFR

5. Do a few SLOW laps of Suzuka in December and next April- I have connections.

6. Three days at Freddie Spencer's, if they're still doing it in SLC this summer (can stay at home) or Vegas this winter.

7. Tour Kyoto/Nagano- I'm in Japan 4-5 weeks/year but have only been a "tourist" a couple times.

I want to be the best street/canyon rider I can be and it seems to me #6 might be a good investment despite being a track based school.

If I had to start over and do all my mods again, I think my top ten, in order, are:

1. Air horns!

2. Throttle lock (either a vista cruise, NEP throttle lock, throttlemeister, McCruise, or an Autovox CSS-100)

3. Voltmeter (for obvious reasons)

4. Hardbags and Top-Box

5. BLS lowering pegs

6. Helibars

7. New grips (I like the BMW grips myself)

8. Suspension Work

9. Sargent Seat

10. Electrics (either grips, vest, gloves, whatever)

A set of front and rear stands.

I see lots using helibars but I kinda like convertibars more adjustable

front and rear suspension

then I may lean into the breaks be it better pads or a radial(but thats just me)

lastly a half exhaust or better yet full if you can stand the bill.

all relative things though, because we have much different animals
