And this is from BMW:

A single benchmark: the CE standard.

The European Committee for Standardization has created a specific CE standard for joint and back protectors, in consultation with standards bodies in various European countries. These are a good compromise between safety, comfort and ergonomics, but the problem is that most protector systems are designed for the maximum impacts specified in the CE standard. Low impacts, which are more common, release limited kinetic energy, but most of this reaches the body without being absorbed first.

BMW Motorrad actually applies stricter standards to its protectors, which achieve the lowest residual forces on the market: only 10 to 12 kN in the case of joint protectors, and 4 to 6 kN for back protectors.

Each product is required by law to be labelled with its size and the standard it complies with.

Back protectors must also be marked performance level 1 or 2, depending on the degree of protection they provide, with level 2 being significantly better than level 1.

When you buy a back protector, always check that it's marked "EN 1621-2", and that its performance level is 2, not 1.

In order to obtain level 2 certification, protectors must meet the very highest specifications. The test involves dropping a 5-kilogram steel wedge directly onto the protector, generating a force of up to 180 kN. The protector must produce an average residual force of less than 9 kN, with no single value exceeding 12 kN.

This is not a problem for BMW Motorrad's new NP protectors, all of which achieve level 2 as a minimum. Those which comply with EN 1621-1, which applies to shoulder, elbow, hip and knee protectors, must produce a residual force of not more than 35 kN; the best figures achieved by BMW Motorrad NP protectors in this category are 10-12 kN.

The C.A.R.E. protector concept.

Stay safe with BMW's world-beating product.

Motorcycling is fun, but only if you feel safe. That's why BMW Motorrad has worked with specialists in biomechanics, medicine and accident research to develop a new and even safer generation of protectors.

Despite being extremely soft, flexible and inconspicuous, they provide a level of protection that's second to none, absorbing the impact by moulding themselves to vulnerable parts of the body and also providing significantly better coverage of the joints, combining active safety with luxurious comfort.

So how does it work?

Experts agree that the lower the residual energy, the more effectively the protector reduces the impact. In other words, it must absorb as much energy as possible rather than transmitting it to the body.

The protector must also delay the force, spreading it out for as long as possible and smoothing out the peaks.

BMW Motorrad's new NP protectors are like the crumple zone of a car, giving the bones the maximum amount of time to disperse the energy from the impact.

In this respect, they're 200-700% better than other protectors.

Protectors must also be ergonomic.

The best size for a back protector, for example, will depend on the distance from your hips to your shoulders, and this will actually be written on the protector itself. In the case of a large-size protector, it must be at least 55 centimetres to be effective. You'll find details of the different sizes in the catalogue price list.

The Forcefield back protector meets the EN 1621-2 Level 2, the chest protector meets EN 1621-2 Level 1, and the shorts meet EN 1621-1 Level 3.

Does BMW make a chest protector too? I've seen their back protector, looks pretty sweet.

I stopped by the MC shop today and tried on the Icon vest:

Icon Field Armor Vest (New Enough)

They only had "Regular" size, it also comes in XL, I was this close to buying, but the thing seemed to restrict my breathing while i had it under my jacket, so i opted for one of those pads that fits in the jacket for $20 instead <_< . I don't consider myslef an XL person, so I don't know if the vest was too small or not, the salesman said that it fit correctly (but it was the only one there, so i'm sure he was trying to sell it :salesman: ).

I would like to invest in a back/chest protector that i can use under my MC jacket, as well as downhill skiing and mountain biking.

any thoughts?

Thanks for a great link.

After looking around a bit, I think i'm going to go with Forcefield armor. It looks like it offers the best certifiable protection out there.

Plus, I'll probably get pair of Forcefield shorts too:

Glad to see your taking my advise - Ive done some research and this one is made for Joe rocket by Forcefield. I just bought mine off Ebay. I summited an offer of 89.00 and he cam back with $111.95. They were going to charge me $19.95 shipping but got them to reduce it to $9.95 ..... Just a heads up. Brian

Thanks for that mate, I see that sale is stilla ctive, maybe they've got a few of them - how did you discover it was made by forcefield - it does look the same.

I'm waiting to find out the RRP of the forcefield one in Australia, but they only landed in the country last Monday, but I think even after the exchange rate it would be cheaper buying one of these off fleabay.

How did you go with the sizing?

Cheers

It looks like I'll just get a Forcefield one locally, coz he came back with $111.95 on my offers of $75 and $85. Like a lot of ebay stuff, sellers make up their shortfall from the selling price in their postage. $60usd postage to Australia!

I know this is way too much as I'm just about to pay for some parts for my C4, including a full set of brake pads and braided lines, and the shipping for them is only $45 usd.

Cheers
