VFR 750F Problem

Hello all!!!

 

I have a small problem that I would like to share to see if I can find a solution.

I have a Honda VFR 750 F from 1995.

For some time now, when I engage the gears, it does not develop speed the way it did, it takes longer, giving the impression that it is limited.

The sound of acceleration doesn't seem to be the same anymore

In addition to this, there smell of gasoline that wasn't there. I changed the air filter and the gasoline filter, but the problem remains. what could it be?

What can I check to resolve the problem?

Is this bike coming out of Winter storage for Spring by any chance?

 

Sounds like you need the carbs cleaned/rebuilt.

sorry,  its a smell of gasoline that wasn't there.

 

No, always run, no winter storage

Sounds like you might be running off three cylinders. 

 

This happened to me and the issue was simply a loose spark plug boot. You can diagnose this by following the spark plug resistance measurements in the manual and by also carefully touching the headers when you first start up the bike and see if any of them are cold. 

I was about to rip the carbs out and clean them for no reason.

If it has been a long time, or never, then its not for no reason.  Even if it is running fine.

 

Cleaning the sediment from the bowls and pilot jets, while replacing the orings, means it is done in your garage on your terms.  Not developing an issue out on the road where you are forced to deal with it.

 

Cleaning / rebuilding carbs can be preventative maintenance too.

Indeed, this would be my last resort, too many opportunities to F... things up.

 

 

  • running on 3 cilinders smell of fuel? been there done that, forgetting to reconnect 1  sparkplug boot....
  • Pull the sparkplugs and inspect them. Fitting new ones doesnot cost the workd
  • idle the engine and spray brake cleaner amongst the carbs (take side panels off). does the engine react to this? False air
    • Check that each of the 4 vacuum porst (1 each on each ciliner is cappd. Either by a small bolt or the spout with a rubber cap+clip
    • any crack in the boots between carb and engine
  • Take the fuel pump out the circuit (and disconnect the plug), reroute the fule lines. Will run fine this way as long as the tank is > half full to be sure.

If plugs are connected and not worn out ...

Carburettor cleaning and new O ring gaskets all over sounds sound right to me. At least that was the diagnosis for my bike with similar behaviour. In my case the acceleration behavior was felt like a hesitation in the middle rpm zone - or rather the middle caburation zone. Idle and full throttle was OK, but these are different work zones for the carburettors. Spot leaks (smell) or sometime waterfall like leaks from carbs are due to aging of the o-rings and chemical reaction to the modern (unleaded) fuel. So this rebuild will be needed sooner or later.

Ah yes one of the few certainties in life: death, taxes, and carb rebuilds 

 

That's valid, I know I am on borrowed time until the next carb overhaul, but until then... More riding less wrenching 😄

Hah!  So true.

 

It just sucks when your extended loan goes out of term on a trip or a ride in the mountains.  The penalties can be harsh and expensive.  😄
