Member Contributer karhawk Posted March 16, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted March 16, 2012 Noob question, just bought a 96 VFR with some smashed body work, I don't suppose RC30 body work could be made to fit? The twin headlight is just the tip of the issues I guess, some one has a complete set of fibre glass body work for pretty cheap. I 'm going to pu the bike tomorrow morning, aside from one side body work being bad it's looks like a pretty good deal at $1200 bucks. Chris Oakland, Ca. Veefer800Canuck
Anything is possible, and RC30 replicas have been made before from VFR750's. There are some pictures floating around, but I can't find any at the moment. Someone will be along soon to fill in the blanks though......
Guest
I'm doing the exact same project on a 96 VFR750. I'm gathering bits and info together at the moment but so far what I have found out is: Headlights are very similar to Suzuki GSXR 400/700/1100 (I bought some for £15 on ebay) they are the right size, but the spacing between them is 6mm too narrow, I'm making a plate to widen them slightly. Pattern fairings are reasonably easily available (airtech do a good one) You will need to custom make a new subframe and various brackets to fit There is an exhaust available in the UK which is an rc30 replica which fits the vfr750 directly: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130479328630&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (old link but shows you what is available) VTR1000 brake and clutch levers with reservoirs match the rc30 better than the original 'coffin' type reservoirs Clip ons will be needed to go below the yoke, but will leave 39mm of stanchion protruding above the top yoke, CBR929 Upside down forks are a popular mod to solve this, although you will need new calipers, discs etc. The NC30 (VFR400R) has lots of similar or parts, some are even the same (like the rear lights) switches are very similar. Fuel tank is the hardest part, the NC30 one is the cheapest option but probably wont fit over the airbox, you may have to get it modified Radiator will have to be changed to fit under the fairing You could use an NC30 rear wheel (about 4 1/2 inches wide), also the NC30 spindle should fit directly onto the VFR750 swingarm, this means you could use an RC30 rear wheel (about 6 inches wide) but tyre choice is very limited. All in all it can be done and relatively cheaply, but there will be a lot of fettling to get things to fit. Hope this helps
Member Contributer kgsmotorcycles Posted March 17, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted March 17, 2012 Here is a copy of a post made a while back.. Unfortunately the original link does not load for me. By the look of it the rvf400 eccentric is 10mm shorter than the 4th gen.. Any one make it work before? I found this on the net some years ago... The info on it has become very helpfull when swapping over single sided components. AFTER 1997, the VFR rear hub/spindle used similar dimensions to the rc45. i might be wrong there, but have read before. Any chance anyone could complete this spec. list below so we can know for sure??? I now use an rc30 hub and spindle in a 94-97 vfr swingarm. Only mod was to the brake caliper stay. Sprockets are not a problem. Im now running a 520 chain sprocket combo. Widely available aftermarket. 525 also available from Honda if you so wish. Taken from... http://guukan.org/garage/ Honda VFR ('90-'2003+), Hawk, RC30/45, NSR250 all use the same relative rear wheel offset. i.e. mix and match wheels amongst the various models and so long as the spindle face is unmolested the wheels will remain centered. 90-93 VFR (shock linkage mount is two lobes on bottom of swingarm)(shock end is a 'fork') Length: 565 Pivot width: 242 (+3.5 thrust collar) Pivot diameter: 20 Eccentric outside diameter: 105 Eccentric width: 70 (+3 crenelated 'edge') Caliper carrier diameter: 75 Caliper carrier width: 14 Brake rotor diameter: 255 Brake rotor mount diameter: 110 Sprocket mount diameter: 175 Wheel drive diameter: 100 94-97 VFR (shock linkage mount is one lobe on bottom of swingarm)(shock end is an 'eye') Length: 560 Pivot width: 227 (+3.5 thrust collar) Pivot diameter: 20 Eccentric outside diameter: 105 Eccentric width: 70 (+3 crenelated 'edge') Caliper carrier diameter: 75 Caliper carrier width: 14 Brake rotor diameter: 255 Brake rotor mount diameter: 110 Sprocket mount diameter: 175 Wheel drive diameter: 100 Hawk (shock is direct-mounted to top of swingarm)(shock end is an 'eye') Length: 545 Pivot width: 235 Pivot diameter (right): 15 Pivot diameter (left): <22 Eccentric outside diameter: 105 Eccentric width: 70 (+3 crenelated 'edge') Caliper carrier diameter: 75 Caliper carrier width: 14 Brake rotor diameter: 240 Brake rotor mount diameter: 100 Sprocket mount diameter: 165 Wheel drive diameter: 100 RC30 (shock linkage mount is two lobes on bottom of swingarm)(shock end is a 'fork') Length: 530 Pivot width: 235 Pivot diameter: 20 Eccentric outside diameter: 105 Eccentric width: 70 (+3 crenelated 'edge') Caliper carrier diameter: 76 Caliper carrier width: 13 Brake rotor diameter: 220 Brake rotor mount diameter: 110 Sprocket mount diameter: 140 Wheel drive diameter: 85 RC45 (shock linkage mount is two lobes on bottom of swingarm)(shock end is a 'fork') Length: 540 Pivot width: 250 Pivot diameter: 20 Eccentric outside diameter: 117 Eccentric width: 77 (+3 crenelated 'edge') Caliper carrier diameter: 76 Caliper carrier width: 13 Brake rotor diameter: 220 Brake rotor mount diameter: 110 Sprocket mount diameter: 140 Wheel drive diameter: 85 RVF400 (shock linkage mount is two lobes on bottom of swingarm)(shock end is a 'fork') Length: 540 (??) Member Contributer JZH Posted March 18, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted March 18, 2012 ISTR that CBR900RR headlights might be a more direct swap. NC30 and RC30 rear wheels are both 18", which is really not what you want. Ideal would be a rear wheel off an RC45, but not easy to find! Member Contributer YoshiHNS Posted March 18, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted March 18, 2012 I might be thinking of another tail plastic, but I think the 900rr subframe will work with an RC30 tail plastic.
Member Contributer george6x Posted March 18, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted March 18, 2012 did you know that the people who make delkevic pipes also make wheels and other parts i bought a vfr front from them.
Member Contributer ron_al Posted March 18, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted March 18, 2012 You will need to custom make a new subframe and various brackets to fit You could go with aftermarket rear bodywork designed for the stock rear subframe; I'm thinking of Thurn's single-seat cowl here http://www.thurn-motorsport.de/html/hocker-rc36.html Not sure about current availability or currency conversion rates or shipping. Or something like Airtech lists here http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/hondaz/VFR7501994-97.htm I have no experience with either - just throughing out options. Good luck! Member Contributer karhawk Posted March 29, 2012 Author Member Contributer Share Posted March 29, 2012 Thanks for all the good information, I'm still going back and forth on what to do with my bike. I don't like the stock farings, I kind of like the vintage 1/2 faring dual headlight look either RC 30 upper or FZ 600 early upper faring. I must have looked at hundreds of possible choices lately.
