Member Contributer BonusVFR Posted April 20, 2011 Author Member Contributer Share Posted April 20, 2011 Well CNET just posted a review of the Nikon S9100, my current choice as a replacement tank bag camera. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/nikon-coolpix-s9100-black/4505-6501_7-34505807.html?autoplay=true&tag=cnetRiver

Member Contributer BonusVFR Posted May 18, 2011 Author Member Contributer Share Posted May 18, 2011 Well I pulled the trigger on a Nikon S9100. I almost opted for a Canon S95 but wanted a bit more zoom. I was looking for a deal but none to be had after the big earthquake in Japan so I jumped on the Nikon. Violating all known MC tour rules, I purchased the camera the day before a short MC jaunt to Mexican Hat Utah and the Moki Dugway. Of course the manual is on a DVD so I was using the monkey push and pray technique on this 4 day tour. Like all my adventures with electronics, I have a few more lessons learned in the screwup bag now. Despite relatively poor lighting conditions (hazy and not at peak contrast conditions) I managed to get some earth tone shots. Interesting Road on a Big Bike! Goosenecks State Park - the view. You can see some specks in the right fork. Remarkable telephoto shot considering it was handheld in a 20 kt wind at full 18X. And no you could not use your feet to zoom in this case. The image stabilization stuff works even better than I imagined. Wyatt Earp shot people here in Prescott. Pretty good low light shot errrr photo ...again hand held with no flash. One of the new dual sport critters in Mexican Hat. Tour Ride Report anybody?
Member Contributer BonusVFR Posted June 14, 2011 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 14, 2011 One of the lessons learned on this trip was not to brag about how your NEW camera would easily fit in a Stich pocket. THis is what happens when you put the 9100 camera in your pocket and you bump the magic wheel to "effects" by accident. Here is a shot of Canyon de Chelly (now pronounce that). Turns out when I got back that the unwanted but still special effect was "soft" . Ok if you are snapping the Mona Lisa I guess. To me it meant my shot was out of f... focus. Gee another lesson learned on the road. But it did pull in some KLR adventurers dwellings across the canyon even if they were still a little "soft". More shots near my house. Nikon DX DSLR...in full auto Almost the same view with the 9100....not as much control of options but full auto works. So far so good and as I am digging into the intended and unintended consequences of turning the wheel. I think I will put the camera in the smaller back pocket in my Tankbag. Never could be that with my old Kodak. Auto scene selector into the sun while testing my new hardbag setup.
Member Contributer Gerrys02800 Posted January 10, 2012 Member Contributer Share Posted January 10, 2012 *bump* Anyone get a new camera over Christmas / Bday for your upcoming 2012 tours ?. Edit to add: We bought the Canon ELPH 300 12.1 Mp for Christmas... I charged it, put the battery in it and turned it on... Lens came out, camera then flashed up a " ERROR CODE" shut off and now the lens is stuck. Took it ot the place we bought it, they tried to fix it with zero luck. They wanted to give me another camera, but I just said no and credit my card back. So, I had a camera for about 10 min.....

Member Contributer BonusVFR Posted January 10, 2012 Author Member Contributer Share Posted January 10, 2012 Wow Santa delivered a new P&S Nikon P7000 with a bigger sensor 1/1.7 ! While my Nikon 9100 has performed well on my Idaho tour last year.............. . When the stars came out later at Great Basin NP ...I was looking for more exposure control. No shots of the spectacular heavens with my 9100! The P7000 has a great deal more exposure capability and a bigger sesnor. Plus since it is discounted now (P7100 with similar specs is the current model) it is a great value. Recent firmware updates have fixed most of the issues with its operation. I will post up my experiences soon. THis is hard to believe but it uses the same battery as my Nikon DSLR..............I should buy a lottery ticket! V4 Rosso
While my Nikon 9100 has performed well on my Idaho tour last year.............. When the stars came out later at Great Basin NP ...I was looking for more exposure control. I have used Nikon s9100 for some time and also missed the lack of control. I do like that it has lots of zoom for a pocket camera and still performs quite OK for a camera with a sensor that small and not the fastest lens. It does pretty good at high iso levels (800). Also being able to charge the battery using the USB port is nice.

It does have the "scene" capability which allows some flexibility in adjustments. It is incredibly handy in that you can stuff it anywhere for every day use. I use it now mostly for spontaneous shots and carry it if I think I may need a camera. Like this! Shot from USS Midway Museum in San Diego. For my next MC tour I will be using my old Fuji waterproof camera on my Bars for on the "road" shots and my Nikon P7000 for those more calculating tankbag camera opportunities. There are several new cameras on the scene now that meet my portable standard but yet have even bigger sensors. Diagram from DPreview.com .............Note the new Sony RX100 and Canon G1X! My Nikon P7000 has a sensor size like the S100 from Canon, which gets great reviews as well.
