929 Shock w/ Ohlins Spring

In theory, the 1092 Ohlins spring will fit the 929 shock no problem. It's a bit longer (1/4" approx.) so it will have some built in preload.

Question is, has anyone used a 1092 spring on a 929 shock? I've got one available that I'm going to try.

After scrutinizing the 929 shock and Ohlins spring, it looks like I'm going to have the same problem as this member did.

The ID is much smaller on the OEM spring so the Ohlins spring is loose/sloppy on the shock.

I'm going to look into machining an insert collar for the spring.

More to come....

Duct Tape! :fing02:

It's not like it will move much if at all once there's preload on it, but it should be easy to find a cheap & easy collor if you desire one.

Yes I believe that to be true, but as an ex race tech , I'm picky (admittedly anal) about stuff. :musik20: (oh yeah, and I still have a whole machine shop, cnc capable, at my disposal, so why the heck not? :laughing6-hehe: )

Hence, the new collar!

Alum. - 2.030" ID, 2.240" OD, 0.375" high.

Fits the shock and spring like a glove.

The other end of the spring fits great with the OEM 929 parts. No need to do anything here.

Now to put it back together and try it out!

The spring is not too much stiffer than stock, 13%, so i'm hoping the shock will still be happy even though it hasn't been re-valved.

So, not only in theory but in fact, the Ohlins 1092 spring will fit on an oem CBR 929 shock with some minor mods. :fing02:

Installed it in the bike and checked sag. Much better. I put the pre-load at 3 when I re-assembled it and it looks like I've got too much. We'll deal with that later (I've got to find a tool/wrench to adjust it), it's good enough for a ride.

Had a quick spin on the bike, wow, transformed to be sure. :goofy:

I had already installed springs (.90 kg) and gold valves up front and was only mildly impressed. With the proper spring in the rear though, the whole package really comes together. If you've installed stiffer springs up front, you owe it to yourself to tweak the rear a little. We'll see how the shock handles the stronger spring in the long run. Can't wait to ride some twisties down south! :tour:

Nice work Chris! Now all of you that bought those Ohlins springs a couple years ago - you know who you are - time to use them for more than the paper weights they became. Excellent work Chris!!

Exactly!!!

Any front mods will only work BETTER if you stiffen the rear to keep the bikes balance closer! :fing02:

Well done!

BTW the 170 might still be a little light depending on your weight! At 190lbs I'm now running a 20kg(1150lb) and my numbers(Free/Rider Sag) are great as well as handling!

Has anyone entertained the idea of installing that Ohlins spring on the stock VFR800 ABS shock? It looks about the same length and doesn't seem to be far off in ID/OD and it is, I believe, a 971 lb spring according to the Ohlins chart. I have an Elka installed on mine but it came with an 850 lb spring on it. I have to send it away this winter to get that changed to probably a 1100 lb spring. I just thought if it would fit I could use it for a backup shock otherwise I was going to send it with the Elka to the shock rebuilder as a spare part!!!!
