Rear Tire Size?

Recommended Posts

No need to go larger than a 180.  If you want a larger tire all you have to do is research which 180 is the widest.  Not all tires are made the same.  Go with a 60 profile instead of a 55 if you want to improve handling.  5.5 wheel can handle a 190 but you have to verify with the manufacture.

Way back when we put a 180 on a Hawk GT with a Dymag wheel. Mounted and measured 4-5 tires and found the Pirellis were considerably narrower, and the only one that didn't rub..

That is what I have found as well.  5.5" rear wheel swap on a couple of.my VF1000.  So, had to have at least a 170 because of the wheel size (and I wanted 60 series side wall) and it needed to be around 170 actual for chain clearance. Pirelli...  168.   Avon...    179.  That one has some chain marks on the edge and I knew it eventually would.
