  1. The Mts are good, the red VFR on a track is good, whats up with the digging/post and camper? kinda wrecks the natural setting unless its a great outdoor MX track than thats aok.
  2. + 1 on eureka tents, is a mid-priced but great performer tell me black 06 from quebec how you like your yellow eureka w/the vestibles? model ? and rate it on a scale of 1-10 please. This is a goodie I think. I carry a bivy like HS only in a quick ride, its my emergency tent..its a eureka, its never been out of the box, its my sleep in a ditch, sos tent. I am not clousterphobic (or a good speller) but IMO a bivy is great when you need it, but I like room for my gear and changing into my pjs, so a 2 man tent is the smallest for me, this vestible idea I must check out...remember this is your hotel room you spent a hard earned $13 per night for. Bike camping is way different than cager or backpacking, kayak camping, I do all types of camping so lots of gear to adjust for vehicle I decide to take, my F-150 is like a room at the Hilton to me. BTW, after a poll was taken most of VFRD likes hotel stays, not the ADVrider group, I like a hotel on weekends or 3 days out. Going to the summitt meet, camping on the way, Indpls to CO , then some, anyone doing that trip? doug
  3. Heres what I do, works great: there are 3 items I must have to camp with... #1 TENT #2 Sleeping bag #3 thermarest mat well, these 3 do NOT go in my trunk or hardbags, they ride as my passenger. I have 3 drybags so everything stays dry and try to fold all 3 items in similar shape, in drybags. the drybags I use have loops on them that you can run a strap thru, I use these nylon belt/straps that snap like a seatbelt, a click buckle. 3 items, 2 on base, 1 on top I smash/compress together like a triangle, the straps click and everything is compressed down in a smallish 3 drybags together camp kit. I then use ROCstraps, bungee cords designed for mcs and tie this camp kit to my pass grab rails and sw motech alumrack. Campkit sits on top of my seat, right where a pass would and is pushed up against the front of my givi topbox trunk. works great, a pic would be good here, I used this system on many, many XC trips, Doug ***see the pic above of sweet black 06 and a BMW, same idea..only I use 3 drybags, one for each item instead of one big drybag with all items inside, best idea...different styles, this works for me ****
  4. I have had good luck with cheap tents, was in one during an amazingly bad storm camping at cape hatteras, NC (near kitty hawk). If you lose it off the back of your bike is less to cry about. The most important thing is to trial run your gear and bike, go on a weekend trip with rain in the forecast..see what works and what does not work...coleman/eureka are good basic tents, a little heavier, bigger than northface or mt hardware/pricier brands...you are not backpacking so save the money. TRIAL RUN before big trip is best advice I could give you. My cheap $40 tent (yes I have some better ones) has passed 5 rainy nights on kayak trips and another 5 rainy nights on bike trips, all dry and good. Doug
  5. Ghey??!! maybe you're just getting too "anal" about those stickers .....they don't bother me none.... Beck 95 VFR Those warning stickers on bikes are terrible, DO NOT PUT YOUR TOES UNDER A RUNNING LAWNMOWER :goofy: duhhh... My Polaris snowmobile was the worst, DO NOT HIT A TREE AT 80 MPH, IT COULD HURT OR KILL YOU :excl: duhhh..in French and English and those damn stickers are a PITA to remove, I have a v-strom, its not mine, but I dont think I can ride it again with all those damn warning stickers, DO NOT READ THIS STICKER WHILE RIDING :excl: duhhh... I hate them, really I do, lol :fing02:
  6. It looks fantastic...great idea....I have the same rear sprocket in all black, the oem guard is fugly bigtime, you made it look better, I would remove those ugly stickers now. I bought a rear hugger to get rid of this eyesore. If it doesnt work out I may pay you to carve out my oem ugly piece, great work, nice gold chain.
  7. Good company, been in business a long time, mainly dirt stuff. I bought a tri-metal sprocket, aluminum center, super steel ring teeth for my Husqvarna 610 supermoto...they answered a lot of questions on the phone, informative literature w/products...expensive but I am sure they would make good on the guarantee. Krause sidewinder. No problems. I would buy it. click on the link above and read some great info from "mr know-it-all" I remember the ads from Dirt Bike mag, 1970s Lots of good advice on chains, sprockets, lube, set up on that link.

    Finally Finished...

" Do your own thing in your own time" I like your bike. It looks like you have done a tremendous amount of work and put effort into a great restore. Honda is the lowest common denominator of all the same cookie-cutter bikes...you took one and made it yours, custom, one of a kind. It looks good. Whats most important is finding what you like and going for it. I don't like HDs but I really like the fact that this group of riders strives to make a bike a personal statement, something unique and one of a kind, for an individual rider. great work here IMO. PS- I know the group will love my l.c.d honda statements here, lol
  9. looks WORSE than oem IMO , make it triangular with the sides following the angle of sides of exhaust cans, put it at an angle towards rear tire, not sticking out straight like a tongue. Just my opinion, trying to help...as is only a BMW thing is uglier, WTF were they thinking? heres a $400 carbon fibre BMW thing I would rip off and throw in trash can.

  12. Thanks so very much for putting together this handy guide. I am a procrastinator...I have the new CCT, all tools, and a shop manual but always find something else to do besides taking apart my Honda. Your pics make it simple and are a huge help in motivating me to change this out. I really appreciate the time you spent in doing the write up and taking the great photos. You are a big help to all the VFRD people here. The part # on my CCT is 14520-MCW-013 (I think its an updated one? dunno) , what was your CCT part #? Again, BIG THANKS !!! for this info ...is very helpful...Doug  (Also looking for an extra CCT KEY if anyone has one they can post me? thanks)
  13. He must be getting old....last year he rode a Gixxer, lol ;p :squid: :squid: :squid:
  14. *****10/22/08 hey, this is a really old thread but give me credit for using the search function.... I want to add a Kisan signalminder (not a headlight modulator) to my 03 VFR 6th gen....I understand the product has been upgraded also..has anyone done a recent install on this on a 6th gen? kisan signalminder...exactly what i have been looking for, thanks Doug ***
  15. 10/14/08 I ordered a CCT from TN 1-800-785-6361 It HAS an updated part# 14520-MCW-013 was $65 which I think is low cost I wonder if anyone can verify/doublecheck this CCT part # and also wonder if it is a better part? the misc parts were only $10 14523-MCW-003 gasket 90004_GHB-600 qty X 2 mounting bolts 14524-MBB-000 cup I am really curious about the new CCT part # and if its correct for an 03 VFR800 and if its a BETTER PART? thanks, Doug My recent printout from corner Honda dealer gives a part #6 on diagram as 14520-MCW-003 , I guess I will wait and see what red sticky I get on my Honda bag. Running the THREE CCT part #s thru SERVICE HONDA OEM parts website I now get: 14520-MCW-000 (original? dunno) is $68.22 14520-MCW-003 (2nd gen? dunno) is $64.57 14520-MCW-013 (3rd gen? dunno) is $64.57 So, I am getting a -013 part, maybe its better, I hope. WTF?

    Its Hot

That place is special to me as I "raced" a hare scrambles (135 miles long) starting in Pioche, NV and ending in Caliente, NV. It was a long time ago after just buying my 92 KTM d/xc 550 and great memories. I stayed in an old hotel, Hot Springs where you could sit in a giant cement tub and turn on hot mineral water right out of the mountain. What I great trip, rode in Utah for a few days, drove all the way from Indiana. I think the MT on the right side of pic was a very steep downhill at the end of the race/finish line. I have an old VHS tape with racers who went pro in their early days, was a very scenic trip for me. Great to ride out on a dirtbike there, Doug
  17. great pics! It looks like I will tackle this job myself. 2 questions: 1) the front CCT and the rear CCT are the same? same part #? 2) I want the BEST CCT (updated version) but am confused about part #s, my VFR800 is an 03, should I use a 14520-MCW-000 or a 14520-MCW-003 on it? Service Honda stocks BOTH Units, I want the better/new and improved CCT but want it to work with my 03. Thanks Doug Plus- Anyone got an extra CCT tool I can buy off you?
  18. As far as getting rid of the ugly round bicycle-like front reflectors amber, I just used some 3m scotchbrite tape, see it in white with my camera flash, it really works well as a reflector but is black/grey when in daylight, I also have a kit ($17 on Ebay) that is a set of big decals on the back of my hardbags for safety, highly recommend, invisible by day, super bright for cagers to see at night.
  19. This is great, I am not much into bling but after seeing an 08 at my dealer I can say the clear looks way better than amber. I want to buy these and do but lets use the power of volume buying and set up a group buy on this, I AM IN, thanks Doug
  20. This situation is pretty common. I am very much an environmentalist and I also enjoy riding offroad. The real problem comes from poor planning and over-development. I have been dirt biking for 38 years now. One thing to keep in mind is there is plenty of misconceptions that the general public has about motorcyclists in general, whether that is off road or street. My advice to your friend is to try to not offend this "tree hugger" student rather let her understand a dirt biker loves the outdoors and nature for the very same reasons she does, it comes down to recreation and relaxation. Respect other views and understand that they are not too far from your own, make a new friend with a new understanding of what dirt biking is all about. I am a hiker, camp in a tent, mountain biker, kayaker, etc but also ride a cr500 and a ktm 550. I am aware that noise and going by a hiker at 85mph in the woods can offend someone so I am always respectful, stop and say hello, meet people, tell them you may be blasting through so just go to the Right side of trail. Multiple Use. Better Planning. just a couple things we need. MUSY, multiple use/sustained yield is the US forestry dept mission, it means land is for EVERYONE, in all forms, even lumber cutting provided we take less than mother nature grows. You would be surprised at how a "tree hugger" can be receptive to MC use if you approach it in the correct way. I use "high speed hiking" as what I call off roading and some major roosting from a Dunlop knobby never hurt a thing, just keeps a nice trail cleared, no mowing required. You will find that there is a lot of support from the DNR on multiple use, off roading still very big in many remote areas. Keep up the fight but respect all others, thanks Doug
