AdamC
Hey all, does anyone know if the front calipers are different between abs and non abs models?
Member Contributer Terry Posted October 5, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted October 5, 2020 That would seem unlikely. The easy way to check is to compare part numbers from an online source e.g. Partzilla. From there you can see if the whole caliper part number is the same between a VFR800 and VFR800A, or look at parts like seals or pistons and confirm they are interchangable. I checked the comparison for the left caliper, and from that I can see that the whole caliper part number is different, but the individual components (seals, pistons, SMC etc) are the same. From that I would conclude that the parts are pysically interchangeable but there might be a colour difference to the caliper between ABS and non. https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/2003/vfr800-ac-interceptor/left-front-brake-caliper https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/2003/vfr800a-ac-interceptor/left-front-brake-caliper

As for whether the functionality is different, I have no idea. I know ABS bikes have a ABS rings on the wheels, but I would assume the bike's computer is modulating the brakes when ABS kicks in, not the actual brake caliper itself, so maybe the construction of the calipers is the same. From Terry's links above, it looks like the "Caliper sub-assembly L Front" is $9 more for the ABS bike, probably due to the gold finish. But again, I don't really know. I have the abs version but my calipers are dark grey/matte black. I believe there were some changes to the calipers made half way through the generation
