whiteakita
hi, i recently bought a 2006 vfr800 vtec and when i start it on a morning it idles around 4000rpm for around 2 or 3 minutes, it then settles down to around 1000rpm and rides perfectly at that. do i have a faulty wax unit ? Member Contributer Grum Posted April 16, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted April 16, 2017 Hi Whiteakita. Can't find any specs on what the cold idle max RPM would be, but suggest if the idle gradually drops back as the engine warms then all might be o.k. 1000RPM for warm idle is a little low, try first setting this to 1200RPM with the engine up to temperature. Cheers. Grum
Member Contributer Terry Posted April 16, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted April 16, 2017 4000 rpm does sound too high but the wax unit does appear to be fine. Maybe some adjustment is in order, seems that it is holding the starter valves too far open when cold. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Member Contributer jackleftzuo Posted April 16, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted April 16, 2017 Clean the throttle, do four cylinder balance, check the screw is screwed into the idle valve enlarges the throttle opening Angle, I hope my advice can give you help, thank you, if there are any shortcomings, please forgive me
whiteakita
i was wrong, it actually idles at 2500rpm when cold, but it takes 8 minutes to warm up so that the idle comes down to 1200rpm which seems like a very long time to me.
Member Contributer Egg on Leggs Posted April 16, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted April 16, 2017 The first thing to do is lubricate the cold wax stat rod with something like ACF 50 or GT85, corrosion on that part can give the symptoms you describe. Member Contributer Terry Posted April 16, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted April 16, 2017 Does it take 8 minutes to get to around 80C /176F? If so your thermostat may need replacement. Otherwise I'd suggest ensuring the coolant is freely flowing through the wax unit as a partial blockage would keep it idling high for longer.
