Rear Wheel Swap

Recommended Posts

Putting a 3rd gen rear wheel on a 4th gen is a direct swap, which is why it's so common. Sure it my be a high-offset rim, but the spacers that are needed are already on the bike. You literally take off the 4 rim bolts, and swap them. 5 minute job.

If you're just looking for something crazy, I know this guy has done it, but I'm not sure about the specifics. Also, I'm pretty sure he's not a member here.

Sorry I can't give you direct links, work internet doesn't allow access to social networking sites. . . .

Glad my social network is motorcycle related.

Don't want to smash the 'use the search' phrase, but google sent me back here:

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/65323-rear-wheel-conversion-car-wheel/

and

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/69463-car-rim-conversion/

I'll probably skim through them again after work. . . hopefully they're helpful.

Also, the 8 spoke or the newer wheels will fit a 180 fine if you're just looking for the tire size, but it'll be /really/ odd (poor handling) if you put it on a 5 inch wheel (the 4th gen wheel). 5.5 inch is pretty narrow for a car wheel, you'll probably want a larger tire if you decide to go that route.

Any idea what you're going for? Crazy custom, just something unique, performance gains, tire size options, have a swingarm with no wheel and thinging about nabbing the spare out of a friends civic?

well i wanted to run a 180.. mayyybeeee a 190. but 180 seems better. i wanted to run a car wheel as well without a spacer. for looks and still have decent handling.

i was looking into getting a rim from another gen but they cost a fukn arm and a leg

The 90-93 8 spoke will will take a 170 or a 180

the 94-97 rim 170 only

Just put a 5th/6th Gen rim on and you will have your 180, not a big deal to fit a 190 to it - the world won't end, the bike will still be perfectly rideable. Tyres are different these days, a lot of the old 'rules' have gone out the window.

There are definitely a handful of VFRs with car wheels on them, but finding one narrow and tall enough to run a 180 is pretty uncommon. Most of what I've seen has been swapped mostly for looks or 'just because' (not that I'm opposed to either of those). My bike had a 180 on a 5 inch 4th gen wheel when I got it. It wasn't fun, felt like it was falling over in corners. The 170 felt a lot better. I found an 8 spoke (3rd gen wheel) on ebay eventually that wasn't too badly priced.

If you're just looking to run a 180, I'd strongly recommend looking for an 8 spoke (bolts right on, no issues at all) or a 5/6th gen 5.5 inch 5 spoke. I think there is some tab that has to be modified or something with those wheels, but haven't done it myself, so I'm not sure. It's definitely going to be an easier way to get a 180 (or maybe 190, not sure) on your bike and it'll probably cost you less than a car wheel as well.

Any pictures yet?

Yeah, lots of details here:

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/49611-rear-wheelstires-the-end-all-discussion/

tl;dr? The 4th gen wheel is 5 inches wide, the 3rd, 5th and 6th are 5.5 inches wide. I've been running a 180 on a 3rd gen wheel on my 4th gen for probably 2 years or so. I'll never forget how much better it felt (to me at least) the first time I leaned it over, it was just comfortable. No fuss at all.
