9" Delkevic (6Th Gen)

I've been eyeing exhausts for a while now, and not4us's post was the catalyst that finally opened up my wallet. I ordered the Delkevic DS70 about a month ago, received it within four business days, and installed it in about two hours. The hardest part of the install was removing the bolts underneath the seat that hold the stock mufflers - I had to get my roommate to hold one end with pliers while I cranked away with a ratchet.

I had no intention of doing a full review, until yesterday when I had a WOT run down the interstate. Pics and vids at the end of the post (if I can figure out how to do it..). http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-DS70-9-Carbon-Fiber-Loud-Set-Exhaust-Muffler-VFR800-A-Interceptor-02-/181099875073?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a2a64cb01&vxp=mtr They were $399 when I ordered them.

Sound: 7/10

These exhausts sound great, especially in the lower (3k-6k) rpms. After that, it's hard to say, because I can't hear it clearly at highway speeds. While puttering from stoplight to stoplight in first through third gears, it has that low rumble that makes females turn around, look, and tear their shirts off. If I snap the throttle closed in 2nd or 3rd ~4k rpms, I can usually get that "pop" that is totally useless but exciting nonetheless. More expensive cans are likely more refined sounding, but I haven't heard any in person, so I can't judge objectively.

Looks: 9/10

Possibly my favorite looking aftermarket system. Call me old fashioned, but it just seems classier than having a Two Bros or Leo Vince stamp across the side in some odd color.

Weight Savings: 10/10

Literally! I don't know what other systems weigh, but by my uber-scientific calculation (standing on a bathroom scale while holding both systems), I saved 9.5 pounds.

Heat: 4/10

Not much can be done here. The weight savings from above comes primarily from losing heat shielding under the seat, on the cans themselves, and on the right side near the pillion foot peg. I can definitely feel the difference on the backs of my calves while riding. If I was writing this in the winter, I'd probably up the score, but we're averaging about 95 degrees right now with Alabama humidity, so blah.

Performance: 10/10 (tentative)

Since putting the Delkevics on, I have noticed more low range power and smoother transitions into VTEC (it used to hit very hard - now I can just feel more pull). Here's why I decided to write this up - with the stock exhausts, my speedo topped out at 155. I would bounce between 155 and 154 due to the governor - or so I thought. Here's how my thought process went during my WOT run yesterday:

154.. almost there. 155! Made it! 156... what? 157.. 158... Are my eyes broken?.. 159... 160!!!!! Oh shit car!! BRAAAAKESS!!!

Since when do aftermarket exhausts eliminate the speed governor? Is there a speed governor? Am I crazy?

VFR 800's don't have top speed governers. There is an over-rev protection built into the ECU which kicks in at about 12,200 RPM in any gear.

You won't reach 12,200 RPM in 6th gear with standard gearing unless you have a ToroCharger.

What's the redline, 11,500? You might get that on a very long level stretch of road at seal level where you're making lots of HP on a cool day, no wind, etc. I think that's about 153 or 155 REAL MPH, not speedometer reading.

Oh yeah that's what I'm talking about. The sounds GREAT !!!!!

Says the guy who confused my Staintune for a shorty Delkevic unit and thought it was too loud....fickle fickle fickle.

Great job documenting the project, I wish the can filled the stock area a little more but overall good job.
