New 5th/6th/8th gen performance header now in production in USA

Unfortunately, the only communication path is via PM. The member list is really the only way we know who did want to purchase the headers. -

Yes but not all on the list have responded to my PMs. Hence my post here. I've heard in the past, some folks say they don't get PM notifications, so I figured I'd use the header thread, and another round of PMs to see what "shaking the tree" might do. -

Hey All, if you're watching this thread and are interested in getting your own set of headers, please PM me (Duc2V4 or sfdownhill) and we would be glad to send you purchasing information. Those of you who had your name on the list but have not responded to the PM sent last month, check your PM inbox, as I just sent a reminder PM. Cheers, D -

Thanks vfrcapn, I just got a text from sfdownhill, saying the same thing. He did all of the purchasing and buyer interfacing, I did all the shipping (it was a role I had in a past life). -

I'll have to double check with sfdownhill, I believe he found them at Delkevic. I'll see if I can chat with him today and get back to you all. -
New 5th/6th/8th gen performance header now in production in USA
Duc2V4 replied to sfdownhill's topic in Exhaust Systems
Ideally you will want to get the 4 exhaust o-ring gaskets for the cylinder exhaust ports. When we did our initial run we did offer the O-ring gaskets but most folks just got them directly from Honda or Delkevic, especially the latter header production runs. This time, we suggest that most take that route, it'll be a lot easier on all involved. Depending on whether your studs at these locations are rusty or corroded, you may also want to order new studs/nuts, or use this time to use some sort of rust/corrosion remover on them while you're waiting. Just because I'm more critical, I ended up replacing these on both my 5 and 6 Gen when I installed my headers. The only other potential gasket you might need is the main header exit gasket, this will depend on what link pipe you currently have for your exhaust cans. In my 5 Gen case, the link pipe was a metal to metal fit and I did not need/use a gasket or modify the link pipe. In the 6 Gen case, I had to have the link pipe expanded to fit the header exit and there it was also a metal to metal fit, no gasket used. Although I do believe I used some type of sealant at the places where pipes joined together. I hope this helps answer your question. Cheers, D -
Hey D, so what's been happening with you?
Duc2V4 replied to Duc2V4's topic in OTHER Motorcycle Talk (non vfr)
Yeah, the main side effect to what they have me on is that it can sometimes make one drowsy. Prior to my surgery, just after the seizure they had me on 4 pills a day, 2 in the morning and 2 at night. When I was on that dosage, I would sometimes feel a little drowsy, but nothing too extreme. On the new regiment, it's only 2 pills a day, 1 in the morning and 1 at night, and I don't feel any side effects (knock on wood). So far so good, so I'll comply with the rules and wait but can't believe how much I miss riding. Not only do I commute via motorcycle, I also play on the weekends on one, unfortunately that's put on hold for now. Tick Tock, Tick Tock... -

Duc2V4 replied to Duc2V4's topic in OTHER Motorcycle Talk (non vfr)
Yeah, ironically, all I have to say, and it's the truth, I feel great! The threat that was in my head is now 100% gone (confirmed by the surgeon) and now more or less, it's just playing the waiting game. In all honesty it feels weird discussing it sometimes, as I really don't feel like I've had surgery. Other than parts of my head (along the stitches), which are still a little numb, and without looking in a mirror, I would never even have guessed I had brain surgery. The events leading up to them and the actual process of having the surgery, is really the story. The recovery process has been nothing but unreal to me, but I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday. -

Thanks Seb. Yeah, not only am I surprised on my speed of recovery, I think I've surprised my Dr.'s too! Happy to be back and into the fray (somehwat) but ultimately, once I can drive and better yet, once I can ride again, will I feel completely healed. -

Just realized I didn't post any update or my latest news. First the update, had a post surgery meeting with the neurosurgeon and he felt that I was doing very well and as long as I didn't have to be in an office to work, he was giving me the OK to be back at work, albeit, working from home. Luckily, for my role at the company, I have the luxury of doing just that. So starting on Feb 1st, 2023, I was back at work. The company let me bring "my desk" home, meaning 2 monitors, keyboard/mouse and laptop docking station, so I didn't miss a beat, didn't have to deal with a lot of bureaucratic BS by being away for a long time, so whew! So what next? A waiting game. When I had my seizure, the neurologist that saw me reported the seizure and I guess the California DMV suspended my driver's license because of it. When I went to the neurosurgeon and asked him if they were the ones to give the OK to get my license reinstated, he said no, that would be the neurologist who saw you at the time you had the seizure. So met with them the following week and asked what I needed to do in order to be able to drive again. Long story short, I had to agree to be on anti-seizure medication for 2 years and wait 3 months from the time of the seizure without having another one and without suffering side affects or complications from the first seizure. WOW! OK. Although this might seem extreme, if I didn't want to be on medication or to be off of it sooner, the wait time would have to be 6 months. So I said, "Two years and three months it is!" onward and upward. I'm just hoping after the three months is up, that the California DMV will be kind enough to reinstate my drivers license without a huge hassle! On that vein, I do have to see both the neurologist and the neurosurgeon in April, the former should be able to give the OK to get my license back and the latter should be able to say when I can go back to riding a motorcycle again, or at the very least when I can strap on a helmet without any issues. Ultimately that's my goal, to be back in the fray with the lot of you on the roads riding to our hearts content. We'll see how that goes, but I'll update you all for sure when that happens. In regards to my latest news, I had my yearly physical on Feb 9th and all was great. My regular DR. said she was impressed on how fast I recovered and that all my vitals, heart rate, lungs, etc. looked great. Did my bloodwork and just about every category we monitor, I was in the range we were aiming for, prior to the surgery. Essentially, I'm better now than before surgery, can't ask for more than that, right? Anyway, thanks for reading this and I hope that this info is helpful, if not inspirational to anyone else going through health issues. Cheers, D -
I have a Knox back protector for sale. I'm asking $50 plus shipping. I am located in Anaheim, CA so local pick up is also an option. This is designed to wear independent of your riding jacket, meaning it goes on underneath your jack and does not require your jacket to have a back protector pocket. This is essentially a universal back protector, as it can be used with just about any riding jacket. It is the "short" version, which means it does not protect the coccyx. It does have kidney protection that are inserted into the waist strap. It can be worn with out with them inserted. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but I'm looking into Venmo as an option too. You can PM me here or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

I have a Dainese Manis D1 G2 back protector. It is meant to go inside a jacket back protector pocket, it is not designed as a stand alone item, it should go into a jacket meant to support a back protector. I am asking $40 plus shipping. I am located in Anaheim, CA so local pick up is also an option. I bought this to go into one of my riding jackets but ended up swapping it for a more "ventilated version back protector as it was my summer riding jacket. It was only use for 2 summer seasons and is still in great shape. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but I'm looking into Venmo as an option too. You can PM me here or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

I have a few sets of shoulder/elbow armor sets for sale. Any set here would be $10 plus shipping, I am located in Anaheim, CA so local pick up is also an option. Most came out of off the shelf jackets, as these were replaced with D30 armor. I do not recall which brands of clothing as these came from my brother after he replaced the OEM armor in his riding gear. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but I'm looking into Venmo as an option too. You can PM me here or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

I have a set of Alpinestars jacket and pant armor set. The jacket armor is for the shoulders and elbows and the pant is just for the knees. In all honesty, the pant armor is pretty much Identical to the elbow armor. Either way, these here meant to go in certain Alpinestars jackets and pants but could most likely be used in other brand clothing. I am asking for $40 plus shipping for the set here, would rather not break up the kit, so what you see is what you'd get. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but I'm looking into Venmo as an option too. You can PM me here or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

I have an old "50's" style motorcycle jacket in size 38 (US) for sale. It is more for looks than for riding as there is no armor, or places to insert armor. Although one could wear a armored undershirt I suppose, if they were so inclined. I'm asking $50 plus shipping. I am located in Anaheim, CA so local pick up is also an option. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but I'm looking into Venmo as an option too. You can PM me here or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

I have a Reax textile riding jacket with rain liner in size large. Asking $30 plus shipping. I am located in Anaheim, CA so local pick up is also an option. This was my brother's jacket that he gave me to either keep or sell, as when he moved, he also gave up riding, so he gave me his gear. Jacket does also have armor for shoulders, back and elbows. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but I'm looking into Venmo as an option too. You can PM me here or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

I have a 5 Gen Givi front windscreen that I am putting up for sale. I am asking $50 plus shipping. Please note that large boxes with little to no weight can often cost as mush as the item but I will do my best to keep shipping cost low. I'm located in Anaheim, CA, so if you're local, pick up is also an option. I don't remember if I took this off of a bike or I bought it as a spare, either way it's in decent shape and would be good for anyone looking for a replacement for their ride. As for payment, I can take Zelle or PayPal but looking into Venmo as an option as well. You can PM me here on the forum or send me an email to: outofthevoid@earthlink.net

Regarding water pump, my recollection is that I took the one off of my 01 and put it on my 09, when that one failed on me at the track. Since my 09 is my commuter mostly, I needed to have it back up and running while I ordered a new water pump. Here are pics of both generations, but don't remember which gen is is which in the photos (oops).

New 5th/6th/8th gen performance header now in production in USA
Duc2V4 replied to sfdownhill's topic in Exhaust Systems
Doing the deposit phase at the moment, so still time to get in on this production run. In regards to changes, only readjusting the 2 front pipes, getting the alignment of these pipes to the exhaust port on the engine more aligned. As for the fit, more like OEM than most other aftermarket kits out there currently. As far as we are aware, nobody has mentioned any issues with tire rubbing. If you are interested, send me or sfdownhill a PM and we can send the details on what we need to place your order, in summary though. Headers are now $1005.00 with a $300 deposit to get yours reserved. Shipping will be determined once ready to ship. Cheers, D -
Apart from the O2 sensors, the 2000/2001 model headers actually have smaller diameter tubes, so you might actually might be losing some performance. However, if those are the only headers you can find, you can always use O2 sensor bung plugs, which essentially just block the sensor ports on the headers, so no need to change CPU or wiring harness. Or, you if you have $ to spend, you can look into the headers that fellow VFRD member sfdownhill are having built soon, just waiting on deposits. That being said, I thought I had a set of 98/99 headers in my garage but I'd have to double check. Cheers, D HEADER THREAD LINK:

No CPU change. Here’s where I looked to MiniCarver to what he had done and essentially that’s how he did it too, motor swap only. Happy so far but because of my “little” (haha) medical issue, I can’t strap on a helmet, or let alone drive a car for at least 3 months, I’m might take this opportunity to do some cleaning and polishing of my black beauty while I wait.
-
If that question is for me, I like the 5 Gen engine better, particularly the lack of the chain driven cams. The 2 reasons I did the swap were, the original motor had more than 100k miles on the odo and the engine was starting to burn coolant, not leak externally but actually leak into the combustion chamber, so the engine needed to be serviced/repaired. The other was the cam chain was technically over due for replacement as well, so I took care of both issues with the 5 Gen engine swap. In all honesty, with a Power Commander or Rapid Bike module, the 6 Gens short comings are not as noticeable or really an issue at all IMO, but I still prefer the 5 Gen engine over the 6 Gen. As for pics, I’d have to dig through my photos on my phone because I did take pics while doing the swap.

Ironically I don't believe I did a post about it, I was in "solitude" mode at the time, just dealing with pandemic lock down and all the rubbish that went with that mess. Essentially, I left ALL the 6 Gen stuff intact, wiring harness, cooling system, even the CPU. Although I took the opportunity to put the performance headers sfdownhill and I had produced when I did the swap. These fit either generation, with the exception of exit tube length. Here my memory is a little fuzzy as to which Gen header has the longer exit tube, but that was the header I had and no header exit tube to exhaust can tube issues, other than I had to expand the exhaust can link pipe where it met the header exit tube, as the headers exit tube has a bigger diameter than the 6 Gen OEM headers. Also note that I have a Rapid Bike tuning module installed in auto-tune mode, so that may have helped the switch out go smoothly. The engine was essentially a one for one swap. All of the mounting points on the frame line up right where they are supposed to be. One word of caution here though, there is a sensor or some sort of electronic solenoid that is in the "V" of the 6 Gen engine, make sure that stays connected to the wiring harness, otherwise you'll get a fault code when you run the motor. You will have to detach oit from the 6 Gen engine to keep it with the swap out. You don't want to try and get this connected afterward with all of the other stuff installed, trust me on that! I was able to fish the wire/connector where I could connect the unit back on and bolt it to the outer part the frame. I'll see if can grab a photo of what I'm talking about so it will make sense. The only other minor concern is for the "coil on plug" connections that the 6 Gen uses, as these are usually attached to the 6 Gen motor with bolts. The 5 Gen engine does not use these and also does not have the mounting bolts or attachment points on the engine valve cover. Unfortunately too, you cannot just swap valve covers as, the 5 Gen engine uses gear driven cams, the 6 Gen uses chain driven cams, so the heads are totally different widths. My recollection is that fellow member 'SEBSPEED' had made some adapters so you can bolt the coil on plugs to the 5 Gen engine. Back when I did the swap however, I asked Seb about these but he was really busy at that time to have them made for me. He and I were going to follow up afterward, which reminds me, I still have to do that. If my memory serves me correctly here, I believe the other VFRD member who also did the 5/6 Gen engine swap was 'MiniCarver'. I hope this was helpful.
-
I and another VFRD member have put 5 Gen engines into our 6 Gen frames. I put a 98 engine into an 09 frame. The key mounting locations were all in the right places. If the 8 Gen frames are the same as the 6 Gen, then I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
