Radar Mount?

Recommended Posts

I usually use a stem stand (Techmount) to mount radar on my bikes (V1) but the instrument display is so high that a stem stand won't work as the radar will be pointed right at the dash or lower. I would like to leave the stem mount alone for future use (GPS). I did a search and didn't see any pictures of radar detectors mounted on the 7th gen. Can someone help me out with a solution? I don't like to ride without radar, ever!

I hear ya...riding without the radar detector and heads up display makes me nervous.

I used a Ram mount fork stem mount. (www.rammount.com item # RAM-B-342U) You can search for several different retailers to save some bucks. Simple to install and works well.

Sorry but I do not have a digital camera. I use a cortech super mini tankbag and with the stem ball, 4" arm and plate it raises the detector to just over the top of the bag and perfectly just below the instruments view. You can adjust forward/back/tilt of the detector as necessary.

Someone made their own stem mount if you want to do a search.

So you have your detector aimed at the dash instead of through the windshield?

I wanted to mount behind the windscreen and none of the ram, techmount, etc. products were quite what I wanted.

I just ordered one of these http://www.legalspeeding.com/AWM.htm due to arrive this week.

It is a compromise too, but I think it will work better for my situation. Marginal weather protection behind the windscreen and quick release for easy removal.

Sure wish I had a camera...pix are worth a 1000 words! Apparently with my limited command of the english language... a pic could be worth several thousand.

No...the detector is actually high enough to be over the dash and aimed through the shield. But in riding position, since your head and line of sight is higher and therefore you are looking down, the detector does not get in the way of viewing the instruments. I just measured and the bottom of the detector is 6 inches above the top tree. It is at the same level as the top of the clutch and brake reserviors. Also, the front of the detector is in line with the front of the reserviors.

Advantages of mounting the detector in this location; It is out of wind/most weather, looks are not intrusive, and the wiring is neat. Most importantly, the detector is easy to conceal should you be stopped by leo. For some reason, they are not understanding of radar detector use.

When rain is possible, I have a 4" x 9" waterproof stuff sack that I slide over the detector and mount. Everything still works and is protected.

The heads up display is really the key and substantially beneficial for alerts. Regardless of where the detector may be mounted or where you may be looking (usually around a corner or scanning somewhere up the road...not your instruments) you will be visually notified whenever the detector goes off. Usually you only have a second, maybe two, to scrubb speed once alerted. Without the heads up, if you are not looking directly at the detector when it goes off, you are probably gonna get busted anyway. It has saved me many times when I was accidently and unknowingly exceeding the posted speed limit.

Hope this helps.

I don't use a radar for riding, but I do have a brake reservoir mounting bolt adapter mount from RAM for my GPS.

If you like the RAM stem mount and just need longer extension, RAM makes 3 different lengths.

Could you send me a picture of that brake res mounting bolt adapter on your bike? I've been talking to TechMount and they offer the same thing but I was hesitant because I was concerned that the radar would be hitting the upper fairing when turning lock to lock.

Gloryracing, I appreciate your contribution. What you described sounds or is a stem stand mounted to the upper triple clamp. I am trying to avoid that area for future use of a GPS in that location with a Ram mount. That also sounds like quite a tall stand to clear the gauge cluster.

I've got a wireless Escort and I just put heAvy duty Velcro on that little flat area at the very front of the tank. Radio shack has a splitter that plugs into the detector And let's me link my iPod and headphones into it. Music plays and the radar chirps in over the top of it. The location is perfect IMO.

Sorry, missed this completely... Here is the mount I was referring to:

I'll snap a pic of it mounted on my VFR when I get home. I now have the stem mount for GPS, and use this mount on the clutch reservoir for other misc. uses.

If what has been suggested so far doesn't pique your interest, take a look here as well: http://www.saeng.com/category.php?category=59

I had the mirror stem mount that I used with my Valentine1. I never liked the idea of placing the V1 directly behind the windscreen as I would be partially blocking the rear sensor, so I mounted it on the mirror stem using one of the Saengs mount. Although the radar sits out in the open, I didn't have any problems with it and a simple plastic sandwich bag was enough to provide protection from rain.

HOWEVER, after a couple of years, the glue which held the platform to the stem, gave out in the middle of a ride. Luckily it came with a safety wire that kept it from falling to the road, and wasn't a difficult fix.

I like the lower stem mount location for GPS. The higher mount off the handlebar would be better for camera, cellphone, radar detector, cup holder  , etc.

It may be kind of ghetto but I mount mine with velcro to the fuel cap on the top of the tank. It is over the top of the dash and makes a good out of the way to run a input from the radar to my scala on my helmet.

What Radars do you lads ride with, over here in the uk we don't really use radars but there is now an increase in radar/laser police vans and it may be time to have a look into these detectors..

We have one over here called the Snooper Laser Pod have you heard or used one or similar ?

Snooper Laser Pod
laser_pod_logo.jpg

Laser Pod is a completely unique device that has been designed to add laser detection to almost any portable satellite navigation system on the market and will detect most types of laser gun in use throughout Europe. Whilst most portable navigation systems on the market can provide advance warning of fixed speed traps, none could alert you to mobile speed traps - until now!

  • Works with most portable sat navs
  • Neat and easy installation
  • Audible and Visual alerts
  • Range up to 1500m
  • Detects most types of laser gun
  • Can be used as stand alone laser detector

Description

A blue status LED comes on when the unit is powered up, this becomes a red flashing LED when a 904nm lightwave laser beam is detected as used by the mobile safety camera vans. There is also an audio alert that sounds.

Easy Installation

Adding laser pod to your sat nav is easy. Simply mount laser pod on the back of your sat nav or smart phone with the mounting pad provided and power from the cigarette lighter socket using the cable included. Next power your sat nav from the 5V output socket built-in to Laser Pod and you are ready to go. Sat nav and laser detection neatly bundled and powered from only one car charger! Laser Pod comes with 3 connection cables, twi mini USB cables and a round pin connector to cover most sat nav units. The cigar lighter plug also has a standard USB socket so you can power an iPhone or similar device alongside the Laser Pod.

  • Works with most portable sat navs
  • Neat and easy installation
  • Audible and Visual alerts
  • Range up to 1500m
  • Detects most types of laser gun
  • Can also be used as a stand alone laser detector

Laser Pod is the best kind of gadget - simple but highly effective. It's the only product of it's kind and all drivers will appreciate an advance warning of laser activity, and with Laser Pod being so easy to use, it is the perfect solution.

Compatibility

The Laser Pod is compatible with all sat navs that use the industry standard 5v mini USB socket for power as shown on the right. This is the case for all the Garmins and TomTom units as we understand it and most other sat nav units.

The Laser Pod is compatible with the Snooper S900 and S5000 range of sat navs and also the Snooper My-Speed and My-Speed Aura camera detectors. Please be aware it is not compatible with the Snoope rS6000 or S7000 units or older S2000, Indago and Strabo units as these use an older 12v power system in which case you would need to run it as a stand alone detector.

Can also be used as a stand alone laser detector

Snooper Laser Pod can also be mounted as a stand-alone laser detector, either mounted on your vehicles rear view mirror or the windscreen suction cup bracket provided. Power from the 12v accessory socket or can even be hardwired using the optional 'hard wire' cable (available separately).

Please note that this device is fully legal in the UK but illegal in some European countries like France.
